Steel Production & Production facilities
Steelmaking
Dneprospetsstal produces more than 800 grades and 1200 cross-sections, and is constantly developing and modernizing its production facilities, adapting new technologies and up-to-date equipment for high product performance. DSS’ manufacturing process optimally combines di!erent technologies and procedures, producing high-quality products that meet the varied and exacting requirements of its many customers.
DSS’ steel production capacities comprise three steel-making shops equipped with basic open electric arc furnaces with capacity ranging from 30 to 60 tons, one 8-ton induction furnace and electro slag re-melting (ESR) and vacuum arc re-melting (VAR) facilities.
DSS produces round and square ingots weighing from 0.6 to 7.4 tons, rectangular ingots for sheet slabs from 8.9 to 14.7 tons in weight.
In the steelmaking shop № 2 an argon-oxygen converter is installed to produce steel by the duplex method: melting in an open electric arc furnace and then blowing in the converter and processing in a ladle furnace that provides obtaining of low carbon corrosion resistant stainless steel.Steel shop № 3 produces high quality steel, treating the semi-product in Danieli ladle furnace with further degassing of the melt in a Mannesmann Demag vacuum degasser.
DSS has a fully operational powder metallurgy shop with a 4-ton induction furnace. The shop uses cold and hot isostatic pressing (the ASEA-STORA process) at temperatures ranging from 1100 C to 1150 C at a pressure of 1000 atm. to produce more than 30 high-speed and tool steel grades in accordance with GOST, DIN and ASTM standards.Steel shop № 5 is equipped with ESR and VAR furnaces of various capacities for melting ingots ranging from 0.9 to 6.0 tons in weight and sheet ingots of 9.3 to 20.0 tons.In the ESR process the highly reactive slag is used for obtaining steel and special alloys for most responsible industries such as aircraft, defense, thermal and nuclear power plants and others. The process, which is preferred in most European steel enterprises, creates steel of extremely high purity. The VAR process, preferred by most American manufacturers, produces steel of elevated purity and homogeneity for highly demanding applications in the aviation, aerospace, biomedical and other "elds.
12
DSS steel processing is concentrated in rolling shop, which contains a 1050 blooming mill, 550, 325 and 280section rolling mills, a forging shop, a forging press shop, a cold drawing shop and a metal !nishing shop. All DSS long products are furnished subject to US-testing under the procedures of EN 10308, ASTM A 388 or SEP 1921 standards.
The 1050/950 Blooming Mill processes 3.6-7.4 ton ingots for the section mills and produces 130-280 mm rolled bars. The fully mechanized metal conditioning process is performed on high speed peeling machines. The 550, 325 and 280 Section Rolling Mills are designed for mechanized high-speed production, products 8-130 mm can be furnished in as rolled or machined condition. Within the investment program of DSS production development RPS 377 Loeser machine is commissioned in the shop area of the rolling shop "nishing line. RPS 377 machine allows to process bars of all steel grades of weight up to 2.6 tons produced by the company. The technology of wet grinding «on a contact circle» or «by a free belt» is applied. Metal processing is available in automatic or manual mode.Round cold drawn bars 2 - 45 mm, 1,9 - 50 mm ground and polished round bars, 14 - 46 mm hexagons (for CIS markets) are produced in the Cold Drawing Shop.Large round, square and rectangular forgings of di!erent steel grades are produced in the Forging Press Shop. The shop has hydraulic presses with rated capacity of 60MN and 32MN, equipped with 5- and 10 ton manipulators and equipment for metal "nishing and heat treatment,The Forging Shop is intended for production of high-strength alloy tool, high-speed, stainless steel grades. The shop contains two GFM-forging machines with rated capacity 10 and 3.4 MN. On two peeling lines in Metal Finishing Shop 20-195 mm machined bars and 20-160 mm bars with ground and polished surface are produced. Bars from the 1050, 550, 325 and 280 rolling department are processed in the shop.DSS long products can be furnished in di!erent heat treated conditions, i.e. as annealed, normalized, quenched and tempered and solution treated for austenitic stainless steel.
