Historical Perspectives

• Clubs are the forerunner of intramurals, varsity athletics, & formal physical education programs on college campuses

• Not limited to college campuses--also found in military, commercial, private & correctional settings

• Became popular again in the 1960s

• Liberal, or informal approach• Members involved in determining

• Clubs receive minimal or no assistance in funding, equipment, facilities, scheduling, etc.

• Clubs arrange competitive schedules & coordinate travel arrangements

• Aikido, lacrosse, fencing, water polo, scuba, equestrian, wrestling, etc.
