Setting Aside the Servants Our church is greatly blessed to have men who sacrificially serve as deacons. Both my father and father-in-law were ordained Baptist deacons. Many of my best friends and greatest encouragers over the years have served in that role. The very word comes from the Greek term doulos, which means “servant.” Thank God for our deacon “body,” which is not a “board.” They serve instead of ruling. This Sunday evening, we will ordain four new men to the Deacon Ministry: Gale Graham, Tyson Heyn, David Marzinke, and Steve Richart. We are also grateful to reinstate Bob Caudill to active deacon service since he has moved back from Texas. Ordination is a high honor with great responsibility and stems from Acts 6 when the first deacons were chosen. Overwhelmed with ministry to the widows, Peter and the disciples needed help in daily distribution of food. The Grecian ladies had complained that the Hebrew widows were getting priority. Dr. Luke notes that “a murmuring arose.” Disunity is never in God’s plan, therefore the Lord led them to “select seven men who were full of the Holy Spirit,” proven in their reputation, and capable of being appointed (Acts 6:3). They not only preserved the fellowship, but freed the apostles to teach more effectively the Word and pray. Our deacons may be visible as they serve the Lord’s Supper monthly in our worship services, but they do a host of other duties happily and often without any recognition. They and their wives look after widows, visit the hospitals, serve on call by rotation, and provide prayer support and wise counsel to the pastor and ministerial staff. Like Aaron and Hur who held up Moses’ arms with the rod during the battle against Amalek, they lift me up in prayer, build me up with encouragement, and send me out to be more effective in ministry. Mr. Michael Winkle has been Chairman of the Deacons over three years and has totally given himself to this ministry with integrity, leadership capability, and diligence. He has blessed me as well as countless others and handed off the baton of leadership to Mr. Al Winterman. Al serves in voluntary leadership with Child Evangelism Fellowship and is active in many areas of our church ministry. Tim Roettele has served as our Vice Chairman over the last two years and is succeeded by Philip Nemni in that role. They also are outstanding godly men who help “take care of the church of God” (1 Timothy 3:5). Join us this Sunday evening to hear the stirring testimonies of the five men who have been selected, hear my brief message of challenge, and pray for them during the time of “laying on of hands” as we set them aside for the work that God has called them to do.
