Annual Diocesan Appeal:
Before watching the Annual Diocesan’s Appeal video, it is im-
portant for our diocese to address these painful past few weeks.
The horrible revelations about Archbishop McCarrick and the
Pennsylvania grand jury report have brought forth a lot of anger
and righteous indignation. So many have been shaken and dis-
turbed upon learning of the awful sins and crimes that have oc-
curred within our beloved Church. You are not alone in asking the
question: how do we move forward despite anger and disap-
pointment? In the words of Saint Paul: “The love of Christ urges
us on.” This theme of the Annual Bishop’s Appeal this year has
particular relevance. It is faith in God and the love of Christ that
impelled faithful Catholics to move forward. When there were
times of scandal and corruption in the 2000-year history of the
Catholic Church, the grace of the Holy Spirit moved powerfully,
leading the Church to reform and calling her to greater fidelity to
the Lord. Urged on by the love of Christ, we are all called to in-
crease our prayer, our good works, and our efforts to purify the
Church. Saint Paul clung to Jesus in the midst of many tribula-
tions that he experienced before his martyrdom. Trusting in the
Lord’s love and mercy, we must move forward with the mission
that we received from Him: our mission to evangelize, to educate
and form our children and young people, to support priestly voca-
tions, to serve the poor and needy, and to build up the Body of
Christ in our Diocese. That is precisely what your support of the
Annual Diocesan’s Appeal helps the diocese to do.
Thoughts for the week:
“Love more than others think necessary; Trust more
than others think wise; Serve more than others think
practical.” -Anonymous
“Trust the past to God’s mercy;
The present to God’s love;
And the future to God’s providence.: - St. Augustine
Growing in Faith
Giving from a grateful heart
In Old Testament times, a faithful
farmer gave the first of his harvest to
the temple for God’s use. He under-
stood that it was through God’s bless-
ing that he had a harvest at all. We,
too, can give to God from our grateful
hearts .
Give God the first, best moments.
Many of us rush through our day from
the moment we open our eyes. We
forget that it is by God’s grace that we are even able to see a new
day. Instead, give the first moments of the day to God in prayer.
Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.
Pay God first. Most of us pay pressing bills first—housing, food,
insurance, - and give to the Church from what is left. Then we
grumble when our parish fundraises to meet its needs. Yet all we
have is through God’s blessing in the first place. In face, if we each
give to the Sunday collection for God’s use a first portion of our
income—the Biblical 10% for example—all our important needs will
be met.
God of endless
love, hear our cries
as we agonize over
the harm done to
our brothers and
sisters, breath wis-
dom into our pray-
ers, soothe rest-
less hearts with
hope, steady shak-
en spirits with
faith: Show us the
way to justice and
wholeness. Grant
us courage and
wisdom, Humility
and Grace, so that
we may act with
justice and find
peace in you.—
