08 Lubrication Oil System in E/R

Course 2004

Slide 2

 Purpose of the rules and regulations;

Lubrication Oil System - E/R

To achieve safe and reliable lubrication of engines and turbines.

To achieve safe and reliable stern tube lubrication

Slide 3

Lubrication Oil System - E/R

Fire hazard - Piping design- Quick closing valves

Supply to M/E - Redundant filtering devices or by-pass options- Emergency supply for machinery with long roll-out times (e.g. turbines)- LO separator required for HFO plants

Slide 4

Lubrication Oil System - E/R

h General requirements:

A valve with hand wheel is to be fitted between the M/E crankcase and the double bottom tank.

− If double bottom is required in the E/R and lubricating oil tank extend to the bottom plating

Slide 5

Lubrication Oil System - E/R

For diesel engines burning residual oil fuel, cleaning of the lube oil by purifiers are to be arranged in addition.

h Lubricating oil pretreatment arrangement:

− In systems where lube oil circulates under pressure

Efficient filtering is to be arranged.

For non-redundant units it must be possible to clean the filters without interrupting the oil supply.

If automatic cleaning filters are used, a bypass is to be arranged.

Slide 6

Lubrication Oil System - E/R

Each auxiliary engine or turbine is to be supplied with at least one

lubricating pump.

h Lubricating oil supply:

Sufficient capacity for the maximum output of the engine.

Slide 7

Lubrication Oil System - E/R

− Valves on lubricating tanks above the double bottom and which are open during normal service.

h Remote shut-off arrangement:

Valves located below top of the tank or overflow outlet.

The valves are to arranged for remote shut-off.

− The above requirement may be exempted from for small tanks (I.e. less than 0.5m3)

For tanks for which an unintended closing of the valves may result in loss of main function.

Gear Pump

Slide 18

Gear Pump

The gear pump is well suited for handling viscous fluids such as fuel and lubricating oils.

Consists of two spur gears meshing together and revolving in opposite directions within a casing.

Any liquid that fills the space bounded by two successive gear teeth mesh with the case must flow along with the teeth as they revolve.

Slide 19

Screw Pump

• Screw pump consists of two screws that mesh with close clearances, mounted on two parallel shafts.

• The screws rotate in closely fitting duplex cylinders that have overlapping bores.

Slide 22

Plate type Heat Exchanger

The plate heat exchanger consists of a pack of corrugated metal plates with portholes for the passage of the two fluids between which heat transfer will take place.

The plate pack is assembled between a frame plate and a pressure plate and compressed by tightening bolts.
