11:45am. Messages are given by Rev. Laura Shennum, guest speakers, or members of

CUUF. During the summer, June 7th - Sept 13th, all children will be invited to stay in the

service. Please look for the activity basket in the back of the sanctuary for busy

hands. Please join us for coffee, treats and fellowship immediately following the service.

Our theme for August is the UU Third Principle:

Acceptance of one another and encouragement of spiritual growth

in our congregations.

Speaker: Rev. Patton Boyle

Celebrant: Chip Balling

The Rev. Patton Boyle will be exploring Self Focused, Traditional, Skeptical and Mysti-

cal stages of spiritual development and how they impact our understanding of religion

and our relationships with others.

Speaker: Genko Blackman

Celebrant: Sharon Petit

The Reverend Genko Kathy Blackman, an ordained Buddhist priest who assists at the

Chobo-Ji Zen temple in Seattle, will lead our service today. Together we will explore

Buddhist compassion practices and how they can help us in acceptance of others.

Rev. Laura Shennum

Celebrant: Sharon Petit

How do we move beyond tolerating another person's beliefs and step towards accepting

them? Our principle challenges us to invite people to share what they believe and for us

to be open to receiving it. We will enter into a dialogue of how this simple idea can be

quite difficult to engage.

August 23, 2015 10:30am Service: Community and Commitment Speaker: Priscilla Hone

Celebrant: Deb Miller

How do other faiths view our UU third principle? We will explore our acceptance of

each other and encouragement of spiritual growth in our congregation through the per-

spective of a lay clergy person serving with the United Methodist Church where search-

ing is considered purposeful, if not valuable to life’s journey.

PAGE 2 MINISTER’S MESSAGE—BRUCE WORK PARTY P ICTURES August 2015

A MESSAGE FROM REV. LAURA SHENNUM

Holy Curiosity…

This month will start my fourth year with you as your minister. The next year will

have events that are new to the congregation. Sometime this fall, we will have an In-

stallation Ceremony to formally install me as your Settled Minister and the board has

decided this event will also celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Cascade UU Fellowship.

In addition, we have a Strategic Planning Team hard at work developing different op-

tions for the congregation to look at to live out its vision statements. The team is on

track to develop these options and get them to the congregation by the end of this calendar year.

We will also have a new staff person we will be hiring. By the end of August, we hope to have hired the new

Religious Education Director. This person will continue the solid program we have now and take over the

supervision of the program as well as volunteers. This will allow me to focus in different areas.

I am in the process of getting those areas of focus narrowed down and will have more for you in September

for ways you can be part of them.

I will be gone from August 1st-12th to travel to Nebraska to see extended family. I am especially excited to

help my parents celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Peace, Grace,

Rev. Laura

August 2015 PRES IDENT’S MESSAGE PAGE 3

A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT “Adventure with me—CUUF 2015-2016”

Dear CUUF Members and Friends,

Your 30th president starts this month with the thought; “How many times have I read

one of these president’s musings from a somewhat jaded prospective”? Such is life, it

seems, or what goes around-comes around!

I led your board on the 2nd Tuesday, July meeting. We elected Jack Toevs as vice president. He does not

want to become president. Diane will continue as secretary. The three new board members were initiated

and are ready to serve you. [Davina Hartley, Nicolle LaFleur, Jeff Lau [who is also treasurer].

Rev. Laura and I presented our thoughts on what we want to accomplish for this fiscal year. We hope they

resonate with what you think is where your Fellowship should be focused. I would love to listen to your

thoughts as the year goes by. There is time set aside at each board meeting for your input as well.

What I want to accomplish this fiscal year:

Develop a variety of Adult RE

“Organize” committees

Plan Rev. Laura Ceremony – Deb Miller will lead this endeavor

Develop “the Welcome”

New Web presence & Branding

Support Strategic Planning II

Work with Rev Laura on ways to address poverty in our valley

Board Retreat – August 2015

Prepare for pledging events in Spring

Continue with Goals from CUUF FY14-15

Now is the time for your input if you have an issue you would like your board to ponder/act on.

After discussion the board agreed I should sign Rev. Laura’s Settled Ministers Agreement. Remember, with

a settled minister we are ALL in partnership together. This is not a contract. Sort of like a marriage, that

the couple would put into words how they were going to covenant together.

The trees to the West are down and now the discussion unfolds as to what to do with that “view”. The facili-

ties crew will be providing some opportunities to have input. Don Oliver is the lead guy. The Blue House

maple has been pruned and some cables are running around to support it so splitting will not occur.

Fire danger led to the rye grass being cut down in the lot.

We discussed some other issues, but these are the highlights. Diane will have draft minutes out in the back

of sanctuary for all the details.

Best Wishes,

Ben Knecht

SOCIAL ACTION

Special August Share the Plate

On August 16th, we will have a special share the plate collection. In June and July, a group of us in the congrega-

tion worked on restoring the Children's Activity Room at the Bruce Hotel. We patched walls/ceiling; smoothed

rough walls; built shelves; moved out unused toys; painted walls; and generally improved the room for better use.

During the project, we accumulated costs that totaled about $400. Therefore, we are asking for a special share

the plate collection to cover those costs. We will have pictures of before and after to show on Sunday, August 16th.

Come and see what we did!

A big thank you to those who helped out: Mark Seman, Heather Seman, Heather Coonrod, Ivy Coonrod, Tracy

Maynard, Ben Knecht, Sandy Limbeck, Corbin Steinbeck, Don Shennum, Siena Shennum, Conor Shennum, Bree

Shennum, and Rev. Laura. They donated over 30 hours of accumulated work time! Check out pictures on page 2

for a peek preview!

Sangha

Sharon Meho Petit and Todd Daiko Petit

We are excited to have one of our favorite Zen teachers, Genko Kathy Blackman Ni Osho, returning on Au-

gust 9th as the guest speaker for Sunday Service. She is a great influence in our lives and a real spiritual

friend.

We first met her in 2001 and she quickly began noticing our earnest but undisciplined approach to prac-

tice. It was her guiding hand that urged us to not tense up and resist the pain of long sits, when knees felt

broken. She was the one who corrected us gently but firmly as we learned the proper way of Zen eating,

walking, sitting, cooking and life in general. A Dharma sister is a precious gift, but a sister and teacher

like Genko is very precious.

Buddha knew we needed the encouragement of friends on our spiritual path and so the third of Bud-

dhism’s Three Jewels is the Sangha, a community of spiritual friends. Thich Nhat Hahn has said not to

look for a future Buddha after he is gone. Sangha, he says, is the future Buddha. For many years I

dreamed of a sangha here in NC Washington. It was not until I came to CUUF that I found my spiritual

friends in the form of the Buddhist Group here. And I have had the added bonus of a much larger commu-

nity of UU spiritual friends to be my Community over the years.

So I take refuge in the Sangha right here, right now at CUUF.

See you at CUUF meditation Wednesdays : Morning Meditation: 9:00am to 10:15am

Zen 5:30pm to 6:30pm (okay to leave or come at 6:00)

Tibetan 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

CONGREGATIONAL NEWS AND EVENTS

Circle Suppers

Circle Suppers are large potluck dinners held in the homes of Fellowship members and

friends. They are a good way to socialize with other friends and members of CUUF

while sharing a great meal.

All, including children, are welcome to a circle supper at the home of Chris Rader, 1700

Rainier Street, Wenatchee. Circle suppers, or potlucks, are a chance to get together informally to share a

meal and fellowship with other UUs and friends. Please bring a dish to share and the beverage of your

choice. To RSVP and/or ask directions, call Chris at 888-0181 or e-mail [email protected]. The fun begins

at 6:00pm, Saturday, August 8th.

Please RSVP to the hosts at least one day in advance, then bring a dish to share with 10-12 people and, if

desired, a beverage of choice.

Great Turning Gardening with RE

Announcing the Great Turning RE Summer Program

Every Sunday in August, children K thru 6 are invited to come have fun and learn about our connection to the

Earth and all her creatures. We will form a Council of All Beings by learning to listen to all the Beings who share

this planet with us. We will make masks representing the Beings that choose us, and then speak for these beings

at the Grand Council. It will be fun for all. Parents are encouraged to participate. Each Sunday is complete in

itself, but each will build on the previous classes.

Come Join Us for Fun in the Garden

Every Sunday we will end the day with fun in our raised bed garden, harvesting and bringing it to your CUUF

Farmers Market after the Sunday Service, along with any produce from your garden that you would like to share.

Proceeds will go to support the CUUF RE Program. Make sure your child comes ready for fun and getting a little

dirty.

Unitarian UniversalismUnitarian UniversalismUnitarian UniversalismUnitarian Universalism

There are seven principles which

Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote:

∗ The inherent worth and dignity of every person;

∗ Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

∗ Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in

our congregations;

∗ A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

∗ The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within

our congregations and in society at large;

∗ The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

∗ Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a

part.

Unitarian Universalism draws from many sources:

∗ Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed

in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an

confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and

the transforming power of love;

∗ Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and

spiritual life;

∗ Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love

by loving our neighbors as ourselves;

∗ Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason

and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind

and spirit.

∗ Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the

sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the

rhythms of nature.
