    August 7, 2011

    Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church

    Welcome to Hennepin Church

Tending theGarden of Your Soul Last week we talked

about nding strengthwithin our own souls

during difcult situations. This week aswe look to the story inour Scripture, we nd

    another resource:

The disciples struggled intheir boat on the Sea of Galilee during a stormone night. They wereterr ied when whatseemed to be a ghostbegan walking towardthem on the water. Thenthey heard, Take heart,it is I; do not be afraid .

When have you found courage from a friend, a

teacher, or the Holy Spirit? What do you do

    to nd courage?Whistle a happy tune?Hold someone's hand?

Say to those around you,"It will all be well?"Look this week for

opportunities to nd courage in thecommunity around you

and to be someone elsescourage for awhile.

We are now in the Season after Pentecost, what we often refer to as Ordinary Time and so

we enter into our theme:Tending the Garden of Your Soul, recognizing that most of our tending needs to be during those ordinary times. We livemost of our lives in ordinary time, dont we? And yet themiracle of our lives is anything but ordinary. It is in our everyday living that we practice loving our neighbors, ourselves, and our God. How do you tend toyour soul? How is your garden

    growing?

For next week, read Psalm 133 .

MUSICALOFFERING Let Me Fly t African American SpiritualMichael Schmidt, soloist arr. Robert DeCormier

Immediately Jesus made thedisciples get into the boat and goon ahead to the other side, whilehe dismissed the crowds. Andafter he had dismissed thecrowds, he went up the mountainby himself to pray. When eveningcame, he was there alone, but bythis time the boat, battered by thewaves, was far from the land, forthe wind was against them. Andearly in the morning Jesus camewalking towards them on thelake. But when the disciples sawhim walking on the lake, theywere terried, saying, It is aghost! And they cried out in fear.

But immediately Jesus spoke tothem and said, Take heart, it is I;do not be afraid.

Peter answered him, Lord, if itis you, command me to come toyou on the water. He said,Come. So Peter got out of theboat, started walking on thewater, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strongwind, he became frightened, andbeginning to sink, he cried out,Lord, save me! Jesus immediatelyreached out his hand and caughthim, saying to him, You of littlefaith, why did you doubt? Whenthey got into the boat, the windceased. And those in the boatworshipped him, saying, Trulyyou are the Son of God.
