indows are a long-term invest-ment and come

in a confusing array of choices. You need to understand a few basic points about windows and window design to make an intelligent choice. This is especially important since the window technology has made major leaps in engineering in the last few years.

MATERIAL: A good window can be made of any of the commonly used materials: wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or composites. Each material has benefits and drawbacks. What you have to decide is what material is best suited for

your architectural style and your budget.

PRICING: You also need to understand pricing. Good Value = Price + Quality + Service + Warranty. If price were the only consideration, we’d all be driving Chevettes! Windows are a long-term investment, quality stays with you year after year long after the low price is forgotten. Quality also goes to the reliability of the hardware. Buy the best you can afford—you are buying for years to come. Check the service: Is there a cost for failed glass unit? What does the warranty cover? Is it a lifetime warranty? INSTALLATION: The new high-efficiency windows installation

should be made according to the new CSA-A440.4 "Window and Door Installation Standard." by factory-trained crews. As a rule, it is not a do-it-yourself project. Improper installation can distort the frame, allow cold air infiltration, let water vapor into the wall cavity. If you are planning to upgrade with building store windows as a do-it-yourself project, think again. Let the pros do it.

How to be smart about buying new windows…

Save Money Windows represent a major source of cold air infiltration. New thermally efficient windows save on heating and cooling costs. They are an investment that, in the long run, save money and increase the resale value of your home.

Increase Comfort An old, thermally inefficient window conducts cold air to the inside. The glass surface feels cold to touch. This cold glass comes into contact with the room air and creates uncomfortable drafts. High-performance windows will result in a higher interior window temperature in winter and thus greater comfort.

Beautify Welda offers a wide variety of window and door styles and colors to choose from. As you upgrade your home’s thermal efficiency, you can also create a new architectural look. We have doors with spectacularly beautiful glass that enhance the look of your home.

Maintenance free Modern windows are not only well designed for protection and comfort, they are made with materials that require little or no maintenance. All of our windows come with a lifetime warranty.

WHY GET NEW WINDOWS?

World of Windowsuestions and Answers from the world of windows

What is air infiltration?Air infiltration refers to the movement of air at a different temperature through the dif-ferent interfacing surfaces of the sash and frame. Look for windows that are designed for absolute minimum air infiltra-tion.

What is a "rough opening"? The rough opening is the opening in the wall that the window or patio door fits into. Normally, the rough opening must be sized 1/2 inch larger than the frame in both width and height.

What does the term "failed" mean and how can you tell when a window has "failed"?You know a window has failed if there's moisture in between the panes of glass. There are two types of window failures: 1. a seal failure: the glazing is cracked, missing or the fit of the window is bad. 2. a window failure: moisture is leaking in.

What's the warm-edge technol-ogy that all the manufacturers are touting? Most window sashes in Canada are made from double-pane glass. This creates a dead-air space between the two panes, thereby improving the insulat-ing properties of the sash. An edge spacer is used to keep the panes in place and keep them

separated. In many instances, this edge spacer is made from aluminum. Aluminum con-ducts energy. The aluminum contacting the glass reduces the thermal performance of the windows because it more eas-ily conducts energy. Also it is well to remember that it does not matter if your windows are double or triple panes if the frame design is lousy.

What is the U-value?The U-value is a measure of the window's thermal effi-ciency that takes into account the gasket (compression vs. sliding seal), dead-air space (in double- and triple-pane windows), material conductiv-ity (aluminum, vinyl, wood). The U-value is based on the window's ability to resist the flow of energy. The lower the U-value, the better the thermal performance of the window.

What is low-E?High-quality glass often con-tains a low-emissive coating (low-E), which reduces heat transfer back through the win-dow. Low-E, or low emissivity, refers to the way a unit reflects certain length waves. A window

with a good low-E lowers your energy bill because in the sum-mer it reflects sunlight; and in the winter, it absorbs it to help in heating your home.

What are vinyl windows made of and what are the advan-tages?Welda windows are made from UPVC. The advantages are they are available in a wide range of styles and shapes, have moder-ate to high R-values, are easily customized, are competitively priced, require low mainte-nance, and mold easily into almost any shape.

sing windows and sun’s energy to bring light to your rooms—

daylighting—can open up a new home to you: Bathe in the light in a breakfast nook made roomier with a graceful bow window. Relax with a glass of wine while sitting on a cushioned bay window facing the garden.

Since the early work by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, designing interior space with daylight has become an important aspect of architectural

design and living comfort.

Using light to enhance our living and working spaces is especially important in the northern “winter blues” climates where people may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder depressions due to lack of natural light.

Clever investment in windows and doors can improve the lighting and comfort of your home, lead to improved physical and spiritual well-being. And it can cut your heating and cooling costs.

We at WELDA can

give you suggestions on how your living spaces can benefit from daylighting.

We can help you with the decisions about the number of windows — their size and location-particularly in relation to the sun's orientation at different times of the year. We can advise you on their insulating properties or how they look. Increasing window areas on the south side of a building can increase the contribution that the sun makes to heating the home in the winter.

Daylighting with Windows and Doors

U

Many older homes in Toronto were designed with small windows— using technology that is now obsolete. Modern high-efficiency win-dows allow much larger areas for windows without compromising energy efficiency. Take advantage of modern technology and bring in more light to your home. What to Look for in Windows and Doors

Sash swings out like a door with a crank or lever; very tight closing with multi-point locks. The most popular style by far.

+ Some open fully to 90 degrees for easy cleaning; long-armed folks can clean the outside surface from inside.

+ Compression style seal and locking mechanism that together provide a very tight weather-stripping. Excellent seal.

+ Multipoint locks and the cranking mechanism give high degree of security— impossible to open from outside. High security.

+ Good value for the benefit you get for the money you pay.

+ Multipoint locks and fold-down handles.

CASEMENTOne or both sash assemblies move up and down. In some better models, sash tilts inside for easier cleaning.

+ In some “slide and tilt” models both sash tilt in for very easy cleaning.

+ Easy to operate mechanism.

+ Good security if locking mechanisms adequately strong.

VERTICAL SLIDERSash assemblies slide horizontally; some feature mid-way secured stops. Can have the highest amount of ventilation with tilt-in option.

+ Better slider models can also have the sash pivot out to the room for very easy cleaning. Both the inside and outside can be cleaned safely from within the room.

+ Easy to operate mechanism.

+ Some models offer “six-inches open” secure positions.

+ Good security if locking mechanisms adequately strong.

HORIZONTAL SLIDERSash assembly pushes out usually with a crank or lever. Best model for ventilation even when it rains.

+ Compression style seal and locking mechanism that together provide a very tight weather-stripping. Excellent seal.

+ Cranking mechanism give high degree of security— impossible to open from outside.

+ No panic on rainy days, good at keeping water out of the room even with direct downpour.

Basic models Here are a few points to consider with the basic models of windows. WELDA reps can assist with architectural, sunlight hours, wind exposure and other details1

Since up to twenty-five percent of window’s heat loss occurs through con-duction in the sash and frame parts, it is important to make sure that the frame has sufficient thermal breaks. Wood frames provide insulation that is much better than aluminum but require painting or other mainte-nance.

Vinyl frames, in turn, provide a very good thermal barrier and therefore good insulation. A top-quality vinyl window system comes with many internal cavities. The more the better since each cavity provides heat transfer barrier, reduces distortion in changing temperatures, adds

strength during welding, allows internal pressure to equalize preventing leaking and even improves sound insulation.

Don't forget to consider the advantages and disadvan-tages of framing materials, as well as the maintenance required and the durability of hardware. The ER rating is your best indicator of overall frame performance. Be par-ticularly wary of inexpensive aluminum replacement win-dows.

he key is to select windows or doors that are as energy efficient as pos-

sible. Combinations can offer ventilation of oper-able windows and the energy efficiency of fixed windows. Fixed windows are more efficient because of their better airtightness characteristics.

T

Be an educated consumer! To meet CSA standards, windows must be designed with replaceable weather seals. Some lower-end windows have seals that can-not be replaced in the future. Now, if seals should fail, the initial low price might not have been such a good idea after all.

HARDWARE

Between the window glasses in a conventional dou-ble-glazed window, a spacer is used to maintain a uni-form separation between the panes of glass. Spacers are sometimes made of hollow aluminum that conducts heat easily and can be a significant source of heat loss. The best

are insulating spacers often made from metal-reinforced butyl rubber or insulated sili-cone foam.

uch of the window per-formance depends on the hardware. Since you will

use the hardware to pull a tight seal in many compres-sion-seal type of windows (casement, awning), you want it to be strong and durable.

Look for special features such as fold-down handles, half-way-open security fea-tures.

Ask your WELDA rep also about extra hardware that makes your slider into a “slide and turn” for easy cleaning,

ith the increasing complexity of window technology, installation is not something

you want to play around with. Unless you are an experienced carpenter, window and door installation is not a do-it-yourself project.

A crack in a gas-filled window will limit its effectiveness—and you won't have a warranty if anything goes wrong! Installation is especially important with high-performance windows because poor installation techniques can negate their superior performance.

Although window installation is not currently covered, CSA is currently developing a standard in this area. In addition, some installers have taken specialized training in window installation. Ask them about it.

First, windows must be installed square, plumb and level with shims and spacers at appropriate points to ensure durability and continuing high performance.

Once the window has been installed in the rough opening in the wall, care must be taken to ensure good thermal resistance and good air flow resistance around the sides of

the window frame, that is, in the space between the frame and the rough opening.

High thermal resistance will keep heat loss to a minimum. Good air flow resistance will prevent cold air from leaking in or warm air from leaking out around the sides of the window frame.

Because the warm air contains water vapor, it is important to prevent it from leaking into the exterior wall and causing condensation to form inside the wall.

The materials most commonly chosen for insulating around windows are injected foam or an insulating blanket. Injected foam has the advantage of providing good thermal resistance and resistance to the passage of air and water vapor, thus allowing installation in one stage using a single product.

The Importance of Correct Installation

“Energy efficiency is just as important

in the installation as it is in the window

itself.”— Ontario Hydro publ. 11-201294

Doors come in a variety of materials, some of which

reduce heat flow better than others. Depending on style and insulation material, for example, metal-clad doors are more efficient than solid wooden doors. No matter

what the material, ill-fitting doors lose even more energy and can make the home drafty and uncomfortable. Heat may be lost through the door and frame, between the door, frame, and sill, through glass in patio doors or doors with windows, and between the door frame and rough frame opening . Heat loss through doors can be reduced through careful choice of the

door, its location, and proper installation and maintenance.

A badly deteriorated door should be replaced with a new one with energy-efficient insulation. Select good quality units and get them installed properly.

New insulated doors are usually made of foam and wood covered with metal. Door frames are normally wood, clad with metal or

vinyl. Using the existing casing, the door and frame can be replaced with a factory-made, core-insulated, pre-hung unit. Installation takes less time than site-assembled systems, air seals are tighter and more durable, and these systems come with a thermally broken, adjustable sill assembly to reduce heat loss even further.

Pre-framed Wood Door Flexible, magnetic weather stripping seals out wind and dust. Also, with compression weather striping, it ensures an airtight system. Hinge seal keeps wind-driven rain and dust out. Zinc dichromate, heavy-duty steel hinges. Thermally broken aluminum sill, together with bottom sweep, eliminates dust and water seepage. Treated pine frame is finger-jointed and kiln dried to prevent warping and decaying. Galvanized, rigid steel facings resist cracking, splitting, rusting and warping while adding an extra degree of security. Lock block reinforces and provides for a full range of locksets, deadbolts, and decorative hardware. Foamed-in-place plyurethane insulating core gives excellent R value while adding to structural stability of door. Kiln-dried Ponderosa Pine stiles and rails.

It is now possible to give the front door of your house all the charm and character of an old house while enjoying modern criteria of insulation, weatherstripping, and low maintenance. Adding EVOLUTION® panels,

combined with Grand-Cadre mouldings will add distinction and class to your residence, while keeping your intimacy and security needs well assured.

Decorative Grills Most WELDA doors have the option of decorative grills for the main door and the sidelites. Below pictured is a wrought iron design with added security and appeal that can be carried to the sidelites.

The Importance of Entry Entry is more than just the door; it includes the door, sidelites, transoms, and decorative glass—all the features that increase the home’s appearance. A more attractive front entrance can increase the perceived market value of a home by 3.2%-6.6%.

Fiberglass doorsFiberglass doors have increased in popularity by about 20% per year as an alternative to wood and steel doors in North America. Fiberglass, which does not dent (unlike steel) or warp (like a wood door), can look like wood or smooth-skin paintable steel. Once the doors are stained or painted, they are maintenance-free for years to come. For heat insulation, with polyurethane cores, they offer five times the insulation value of wood. And they don’t get hot or cold like steel doors.

PORCH ENCLOSURESThe porch is often the first element of a home that visitors see. It is a reflection of the people who live there. Improve and beautify the appearance, efficiency, and value of your home for year round use. Enclosing your porch will keep the cold out in the winter by conserving heat. Porch enclosures also give you extra room to sit in the summer evenings or to keep the snow off your porch in the winter.

“We had a porch enclosure done by Welda and we are very, very pleased with the results. It used to be that when somebody opened the north-facing front door, the wind would blow through the house (pictures on left). The cold air would just rush in with the wind. Now, because the enclosure is a pretty airtight front room, the wind and snow are kept out. And because of the airtightness, it even stopped the door slamming by our 6-year old and her 100 friends. It really is like adding another 3-season room to the house. In the summer we plan to put a carpet and plants to create an environment for sipping wine and watching the world go by. all in all, it was a great addition, wish we had done it sooner.”

PORCH ENCLOSURES GREAT INEXPENSIVE BARRIER FOR HARSH CANADIAN WINTERS A combination of vented windows, fixed lights, and double doors can create a wonderful new addition to your home—relatively inexpensively. A snowroom in the winter and a rain-protected sun room for the other seasons. The Welda Team can advise you on how to create the maximum comfort in a small space, provide ventilation, light and additional usable space.

“We bought two identical sets of patio furniture from IKEA, one for the front and the other for the backyard. After one season, the unprotected set had to be refinished, the one we had in the porch enclosure still looks like new. Patio enclosures cut down on the rains and UV radiation and keep furniture longer.”

When selecting the supplier for your patio enclosure, it’s important that they understand the architectural integrity of your home. Select styles and colors that complement your home. The Welda Team can help.

For many years Welda Windows and Doors Industries have helped 1000's of homeowners like yourself: • Save money in climates with a significant

heating season; windows have represented a major source of unwanted heat loss, discomfort, and condensation problems. Investing in new windows for your home will not only save $100's and $1000's of dollars on heating and cooling cost now and for years to come, it will also

increase your home’s value if you should ever decide to sell your home

• Improve your homes comfort. An older window with a lower glass temperature feels colder because more heat is radiated from a person's body to the window. Cold glass can also create uncomfortable drafts as air next to the window is cooled and drops to the floor. This sets up an air movement pattern that feels drafty and accelerates heat loss. High-performance

windows will result in a higher interior window temperature in winter and thus greater comfort. (www.efficientwindows.org)

• Welda offers a wide variety of window styles and colors to choose from. All of our windows are made of quality 100% pure vinyl; all of our work is done by qualified factory-trained installers. You will never have to spend your time or money on window maintenance again.
