Baker asked parents to stand up and be recognized for their love and support of their children. He told students that growing up in his own family of 11 chil- dren, he didn’t need to look far for inspiration. His mother, who suffered from multiple sclerosis (MS), was his inspiration right in front of him everyday. He encouraged students to focus on life’s possibilities, blaze a trail for a meaningful life, meet the challenges of the 21st Century, and be engaged to promote the greater good. Bellbrook Sugarcreek Locals Schools Superintendent Dr. Keith St. Pierre informed graduates that the School Board was proud of them and wished them all the best in life. “Your success is our success,” said St. Pierre. Bellbrook High School Class of 2012 Salutatorian Margaret Cinibulk encouraged students to slow down, enjoy the moments with friends and family, thank a teacher who had motivated them, and make their next four years even better. “Happiness is achieving largely through human relation- ships,” said Cinibulk. She reminded students that Bellbrook will always be their home. Bellbrook High School Class of 2012 Valedictorian Matthew Witzeman told students to believe in hope - an ingredient for success. “This is the moment in our lives to focus on our future,” said Witzeman. “We will all make our marks. Do not fear but hope instead.” Senior Class President Darbi Griffith offered laughs after leading students back in time to the days when they had to trade in crayons for protractors. She called it a “sad, sad day.” Griffith encouraged students to look past their own small worlds and engage themselves in selfless acts that can leave a lasting impact on others. “Change can be created by one individual,” said Griffith. She informed students to think about her social reform plan, the 1-1-1 plan - where one individual can choose to do one ran- dom act of kindness that can ultimately impact another person, or possibly the world. During the month of May, the students researched, designed and built a model city. Their city will utilize solar, wind, water, and hydro- gen fuel cells to generate electricity and power transportation. The fair, being held during school hours, is open to the public. Teachers, as well as students, will be working together to put the spot- light on clean and green energy sources. The language arts teachers have created lessons on propaganda in advertising to promote the energy sources, while math teachers will have the students generate cost analyses comparing these energy sources to their non-renewable counterparts. Those students taking a foreign language will be investigating how the rest of the world pro- duces their electric ener- gy. Looking at possibilities in the U.S., the science department has adapted lessons from Project Lead the Way and Society of Automotive Engineers - A World in Motion so the students can actually design and power their city. Alternative energy sources is a topic that eighth graders are tack- ling now in order to make their future a little clean- er. The fair will be open from 7:40-11:50 a.m. and 12:20-2:40 p.m. It is sug- gested that 8th grade parents attend during their child’s science class period.

“While I challenge each year’s students toexcel in a project of their choice, this is anexceptional group. During my 35 years ofteaching I’ve had numerous individual andteam projects that I have been impressed with, but this year’s has topped them all,” said Hunt.According to Hunt, students are to solve a

problem that is in our society and come up witha solution.“In this case the team was disappointed to

see Ohio reject federal funds to build a highspeed rail system as a means to solving some ofour transportation needs,” said Hunt.Jarrett, Eckley, Black, Salchak, and Giffin

said their goal from the beginning was todesign a high speed locomotive that would trav-el long distances at speeds more than 125 milesper hour.“With our prototype being a 1/8th scaled

form of a full size train, this requires us to reach

a speed of 15.625 miles per hour,” said Jarrett.“Along with the speed, we must maintain alonger run to demonstrate the length of timethat it can run.”During the demonstration the prototype

reached a speed of 18 mph, which equals 144mph for a full size train. The team worked more than 1,500 hours

inside and outside of the class room andlearned a lot about engineering a design fromscratch and presenting it to the masses.Total cost of the project was $6,207.

Students had a little help from their friends andfamily. They give a special thanks to the schooldistrict and their wood shop and art department,Boyd Jarrett of Carillon Park, Ron Mock of theCarillon Rail and Steam Society, Jack Hunt,Bob Chapman and Jim Carson and ScottJarrett’s parents who donated the jet engines.During the presentation, students said the

next step is to create a larger model for furthertesting. They challenged General Electric to thetask. Jarrett said if GE wants to continue theproject they can call!

 Youth Outdoors

By LARRY ROWLANDGREENE COUNTY —Recently, the

Greene County Fish and GameAssociation held a youth archery matchat its Union Road location.Vernon Seiker and his son Nickolas,

headed up the ArcheryYouth Committeethat held the revised youth archery for-mat. Vernon leads the Coonskin CapCamp archery program and is veryexperienced teaching youth. After some introduction and explana-

tion of equipment identification, Vernongave all the youth an important safetylesson about archery. The group thenwent to work on field targets. Three agegroups shot warm-up at those targets. The youth needing instruction receivedone on one attention. Some had neverbefore shot a bow and arrow. There wereyouth from 3 years of age right through17 that participated. Being the newarchery committee’s first shoot, this part

took an extensive time to complete.Next, in small groups, the kids were

led by scorers through a 10 stationwoods walk. Each station had a regularsquare target and a 3-D animal target. This was the fun part of the match formost of our youth. The woods targetswere scored, and the three age groupswere given trophies as their rewards. The youngest age group (8 and under)

finished the course first, and third placetrophy went to Lillian Vanover. Secondplace trophy was won by Katie Drake, and first time shooter Destini Madelenstook home first place trophy with thesecond highest score of the event. The 9through 12 group was small, but bothshot well, tying for top trophy.Valery Taylor and Nicholas Bone

each got a first place trophy. Our mostexperienced 13 through 17 year old kidsall shot fair scores. The high shooter of the event, Austin

Rohrback, left early and forfeited histrophy. That slid Brandon Crouder intofirst place, for the trophy. The secondplace trophy was clearly won by JustinWills. There were again tying scores for

third, with Eric Goldsboro and AngelicaHeggem each receiving a trophy. AustinRohrback, Adlyn Couch, BrandonCrouder, Justin Wills, Ryan Carnes,Angelica Heggem, Eric Goldsboro,Valerie Taylor, Nicholas Bone, LillianVanover, Destini Madelens, and KatieDrake attended the total event.Cub Scouts and some siblings had to

leave after the field practice so theycould attend a “Cross-Over” ceremonyto become Boy Scouts. They were SadieShepard, Jayden Allen, Colin Rice,Tatum Shepard, Robby Rowland, JullianRojas, Dessie Shepard, and BradleyMcCoy. Eric Pfaff also had to leaveearly.
