procedures, habits

Awareness raising + participation + training of staff,

guest engagement …

Modification of SOPs,Checklists, ..

Some investment required, but

payback period can be less than

6 months

Compare technology options, calculate payback period for

investment, training staff on the use of

new equipment

Changes in

equipment

Measure Before and After

Good Housekeeping in all departments

HOW?

HOW?

Page 4: 02 people and_systems

Why are systems important?

Because you need proper procedures

and processes in place to make sure

certain standards and practices are

followed and tasks are carried out

effectively and consistently.

Page 5: 02 people and_systems

Going greener is about adjusting work

processes and reviewing systems to

ensure real and lasting change.

How?

1. Examine activities under a function (i.e. room cleaning)

Why are ‘soft’ changes in people’s behaviour and work practices important?

Because people are the main drivers of

change.

People are key factors in determining hotels environmental impacts and resource efficiency.

People use equipment, electricity, water, chemicals, etc -> there is great room for improved

efficiency.

Soft changes are often low-cost compared to equipment changes.

Page 11: 02 people and_systems

Changes in work practices and behaviour also have their challenges:

They are sometimes difficult to bring about.

People need the knowledge, commitment and skills to change the way they work and

behave and identify solutions to environment-related problems.

Specific efforts are needed to encourage staff and guests to participate and contribute to

environmental efforts.
