Lately, I’ve been on a de-clutteringbinge. When our guests left town, Ifelt the urge to clean everything in
sight, and that included taking the time tosort through some serious piles of papers, gadgets and clothing.
Now that I can enjoy a little more walk-ing space, I’m also noticing little dark cor-ners. The last thing I want to do is add astanding or table lamp to a newly uncov-ered space. I just finished taking thosethings out! Instead, a wall sconce seems tobe the best solution. It can add the perfectamount of accent lighting and décor with-out taking up extra space.
Before picking out a sconce, think abouthow much electrical work you are willing totackle. A traditional sconce will require somewiring and even some hole cutting in your
wall, but the good news is there is a wide vari-ety of wireless sconces that run on batteries.
Electrical wiring and cutting holes intowalls are not ideal DIY work when you live
in a condo, so we’ll go the wireless route.First, determine where you’d like it to goand mark it with a pencil. The usual heightfor sconces is about 60 inches off theground. Clean and sand the area, makingsure to wipe up any dust.
Next, take some heavy-duty hook-and-loop tape and cut a piece to match thesconce’s mounting bracket. Hook-and-looptape is a type of tape with sides thatadhere to each other. The Velcro® brandmade the hook-and-loop technology pop-ular, and now many brands make the tapein both self- and non-adhesive versions. Ifyou decide to go with a non-adhesive ver-sion, keep in mind that you’ll also need touse industrial-strength glue to make it stick.Because I’m working on getting rid of clut-ter, I’ll opt for the self-adhesive sort.
Remove the paper backing on the tapeand place the “loop” section on the wall, inthe spot you marked. Place the “hook” sec-tion on the sconce’s mounting bracket.Allow the adhesive to dry according to themanufacturer’s instructions. Then, securethe bracket to the wall by matching up thetape and reconnecting it. Attach thesconce by sliding and locking the mount to
the mounting bracket. Now you’re ready to light up. One of the best things about the wire-
less sconce is that it requires no long-termcommitment. It’s easy to hang, and won’taffect your electric bill. If you want to gothe wired route, and you’re new to electri-cal work, it’s best to consult a professional.

There’s a new kid on the cabinet-and-granite supplier block, and its nameis Da Wing Trading LLC.
A family-owned-and-operated venture,Da Wing Trading opened its doors last yearat 2006 Republican St., offering solid woodcabinets with plywood boxes (no MDF,particle board or pressed wood) and gran-ite countertops out of its 8,000 square feetof warehouse and showroom space.
“We own the property where we storein-stock cabinets and granite, thus we don’thave to pay rent, which enables us to passthe savings on to our customers,” said man-ager Harry Kwan.
“We sell (our products) at affordableprices, which are the people’s prices,”added Kwan’s uncle Tommy Chan, whoworks in the sales department.
Kwan goes on to note that the familydecided to invest in the 10,000-square-footproperty rather than renting it out becausethey saw it as a good long-term investmentfor future generations.
Additionally, the property has ample on-site parking, a scarcity in the industrial Kalihiarea.
“That’s something very important tohave,” Chan stated.
Though Da Wing Trading only deals incabinets and countertops at the moment,Kwan explains that they carry those madeof quality materials. For example, counter-tops are made from granite imported fromChina, while cabinets are made using alderand maple woods.
“These are solid woods, the goodwoods,” said Chan of the cabinets, whichcome standard with soft-close hardwareand are available in four different color vari-ations, including light cherry, maple, white(maple) and dark cherry (alder only).
“Cabinets and countertops go hand-in-hand,” Kwan said. “We chose to focus ongranite for countertops because it is aunique, sturdy, natural rock, and a high-qual-ity addition that can enhance the look andfeel of a kitchen or bathroom.”
And for home-improvers looking for alittle advice on their next kitchen or bathrenovation, Da Wing Trading’s staff of pro-
fessionals — which, in addition to Kwanand Chan, includes Kwan’s father, Yue FungKwan and cousin, Josh Guan — is ready tohelp. Just bring a rough draft or sketch ofwhat you want and the measurements ofthe space, and Kwan said they can come upwith a free design and quote for what you’llneed.
“We are hands-on in helping our cus-tomers,” Kwan said. “We help the cus-
tomers design their kitchen and bathroomsand work with their budget and needs.
“Customer service is our main concern, and since we own the property, we will behere for a long time to service our cus-tomers.”
Da Wing Trading operates Mondaythrough Saturday between 8 a.m. and 5p.m. For more information, call 847-3288or visit www.dawingtrading.com.

A lternate Energy Inc. thanks its customers, vendorsand staff for 20 years of support in helping Hawaiimove toward greater energy sustainability. The
solar PV company invites everyone to come celebratewith its staff members at the BIA Hawaii exposition, Jan.25-27.
“We’ve been committed to customer needs from thebeginning,” said Bruce Ekimura, Alternate Energy founderand president. “It’s the foundation of our business and thereason we come to work every day.”
Originally a plumber, Bruce got his start in the ’70sworking side by side with his father. Gradually, he noticedcustomers’ growing interest in solar water heating. Brucebecame an early specialist in the installation of solar hotwater heaters and later photovoltaic (PV) systems. In1993, Alternate Energy was officially incorporated.
Since then, Alternate Energy has experienced steadygrowth, with tremendous progress especially in the past12 months. With an expanded workload — and moreimportantly, the growing professional and technical staff tohandle it — Alternate Energy has enjoyed its position as
the No. 1 residential solar PV installer in Hawaii. The company’s expertise has even gained the attention
of Mitsubishi Electric, one of the world’s premier solarpanel manufacturers, which awarded Alternate Energy itsElite Dealer Status, followed by the international distinctionof being a Mitsubishi Electric Certified Installer. The criteriaare so stringent that Alternate Energy is the only PV com-pany in the world outside of Japan with this high honor.
Continued expansion and focus on excellent customerservice is planned for Alternate Energy in 2013. As of Jan.1, Alternate Energy now offers a competitive financingoption through a partnership with Central Pacific Bankand its PV Power Loan, which features zero percent APRand no payments for the first 18 months. AlternateEnergy’s administrative service team will also expand tocontinue offering the best in timely, informative and cour-teous help to its customers.

Have a ‘cool’ year with anefficient air conditionerNow is the best time to install a new split-ductless sys-
tem. By opting for an efficient, split-ductless air con-ditioning system, you can guarantee the ideal climate
for your home or office. Systems sold and installed by the AireConditioner Shoppe are available in a variety of styles andprice ranges.
“The best time to service your existing split-ductless sys-tem is between the months of November and March, sowhen the warm weather hits, it will continue to operate withhigh efficiency,” said Aire Conditioner Shoppe owner NeilWiedemann.
The latest split-ductless systems provide zoned comfortand are engineered to install quickly and easily. These systemsavailable from the Aire Conditioner Shoppe, which specializesin Fujitsu and Mitsubishi, provide both heating and coolingwith the push of a button on the remote control. They alsoprovide individual temperature control throughout yourhome or business so each room, zone or floor will be thetemperature you set.
Concerned about air quality? These systems have the capa-bility to filter out dust, mold spores and microorganisms. TheDry Mode helps to control humidity levels, even when cool-ing isn’t needed. Other standard features include Sleep TimerAuto Changeover and 24-Hour Timer Cold Prevention.
Concerned about appearance? The cooling-only wall-mounted units, designed for single rooms, are slim and stylish.
Indoor units have a clean, aesthetic design and are power-
ful, though small and shorter in lengththan competing units. The variable-speed compressor helps systemsadapt to shifts in heat load caused byafternoon sun.
Concerned about noise? Theseunits are so quiet you won’t evenknow they’re on. How about cost?“The operative word is ‘efficient,’”Wiedemann said. “Old or malfunction-ing air conditioning systems are energyhogs that don’t do the job effectivelyand run up your electricity bills. The airconditioning systems available at theAire Conditioner Shoppe are the newest models that incor-porate the latest technological advances.” He pointed out thatsplit-ductless systems can be just as efficient as central air con-ditioning, or more efficient in terms of energy savings, depend-ing on the lifestyle of the homeowner.
Wiedemann, who has been in the air conditioning business
since 1979, sells and installs split-ductless sys-tems on Oahu, as well as portable air condi-tioners. He also sells less expensive windowunits that are often the choice for apart-ments, condos and houses. “Even the win-dow air conditioning units, which are gener-ally what you see in older apartment build-ings or townhomes, have been extensivelyimproved both in efficiency and appearance. However, the tenant and/or owner needs toobtain permission from the managementcompany and/or apartment owners associ-
ation to install any type of air conditioning,” he added.Call for an appointment first. The Aire Conditioner Shoppe
gives free estimates on new installs of split-ductless air condi-tioners.
The company boasts an A+ Rating from the BetterBusiness Bureau.

If anybody was to ask you what type of window bestdescribes Hawaii, you would probably say a jalousie, andfor good reason. Jalousies have been a part of Hawaii for
generations. They offer 93 percent natural ventilation fromcooling trade winds when open and can be set in various suit-able positions on rainy days. They do not impede on walkwaysand, depending on your blade type, they can offer full, unob-structed views or total blackout.
Over the years, however, Hawaii residents have found manyfaults with old-style aluminum clip jalousies. When closed, theydon’t seal tight and allow water and dirt to get in. While run-ning the air conditioner on those hot summer days, the coolair seeps right out through the cracks. All the exposed hard-ware deteriorates and seizes in our harsh salty environment, resulting in blades falling out, which could lead to harm, prop-erty damage and theft.
Herein lies the challenge. Open, it’s the perfect window forHawaii. Closed, it’s another story. This is where Breezwaycomes in.
With more than 60 years of louver design and manufactur-ing experience worldwide, Breezway took these concerns toheart and designed louver window systems specifically to suitthe needs and challenges of Hawaii’s homes and condos. Withsafety, security and performance in mind, these systems arelocally manufactured at the company’s Halawa factory. Theyare produced in a variety of configurations and colors with var-ious blade, handle, screen and security options. In fact, theBreezway iOS louver window is currently the only operablelouver window in the United States tested and certified to
withstand a Category 5 hurricane. While Breezway louvers look similar to a jalousie and share
the same benefits when open, they share none of the draw-backs when closed. Sealing tight to wind, water and noise, youcan also run your air conditioner and not lose the cold air. Allhardware is concealed and made from non-corrosive materi-als while meeting and exceeding new-building and energy-code requirements.
Recently, Breezway introduced a new louver system calledStronghold. It incorporates a pinning system that goes throughthe blades and secures them from the interior of the home, providing increased security and safety with the window fullyopen or closed. The Stronghold also ensures that blades won’tfall out, which is especially important in high-rise applications.

Find comfort in a sturdy aluminum roofing systemThe series of storms Hawaii experienced in the last
few weeks, which came with gusty trade winds anddrenching rain, was fairly typical for this time of year.
Many of Honolulu’s homeowners with aged or deteriorat-ing roofs were worried that they would blow off. Similarly, people with leaky roofs worried about possible water dam-age inside their homes. Either of these occurrences wouldmean that expensive and stressful repairs were likely.
Thousands of Aluminum Shake Roofing (ASR) customersresiding in both single family homes and townhouse com-plexes did not have to worry, though, because they’veinvested in a Country Manor Shake (CMS) aluminum roofsometime during the last 24 years.
When ASR owner Fred Rehm runs into one of his pastcustomers, he often hears the same unsolicited comment: “Ilove my roof; during all those heavy storms, I wasn’t worriedat all.”
The weather extremes only confirm to these customersthat they made a great decision when they bought a roofsystem actually engineered to weather the storm. In fact, theunique four-way interlock and continuous fastening hem(no clips) mean the roof actually holds together tighter andtighter as wind speeds increase.
Unlike asphalt composition shingles, the CMS roof does
not deteriorate as it ages. It’s made from aluminum, doesn’tabsorb water like asphalt or wood and is finished with atough, infrared reflecting coating to keep your home cooland looking great in Hawaii’s tropical marine climate foryears to come.
The CMS roof system was developed in 1974 by Alcoa, but it is now manufactured in Piqua, Ohio by ClassicProducts. It is one of the lightest weighing roofs you can buy,and if you opt to install the patented “free-floating” insulat-ing FoamGuard inserts, it is also completely walkable.
The system is installed using stainless-steel fasteners andcomes with a line of matching accessories. Plus, it is installedby ASR, a company that specializes in this system. The CMSroof is protected by a lifetime limited non-prorated manu-facturer’s warranty, which covers 100 percent of the cost ofrepair or replacement for a variety of specific events such asblow off in winds of up to 120 miles per hour.
To learn more about this roof system, call Rehm at 383-8020 or email him at [email protected]. He’ll comeout, measure your roof, make a scaled drawing and give youa detailed estimate of what it will take to install a new CMSroof on your home.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: My friendsand I all love your column and when we gettogether, we can’t wait to talk about all thethings you write about. As a group, we havecome up with the following questions for you:How does feng shui relate to religion andsuperstition? Why are bathrooms considered“bad” feng shui and what do they representin our homes? Also, is an Asian-themed looknecessary for good feng shui? And finally, whatis the difference between feng shui and inte-rior design?
These are great questions and I’mhappy to answer them. Thank youfor reading my column!
Feng shui and religionFeng shui is not a “belief ” system and fits
no religious or superstitious prototype.Nothing in feng shui goes against any reli-gious belief that I know of. It is an energeticstate that exists whether or not you areaware of its effect on you. Yet, feng shui ismore than a “state of existence.” It is abody of wisdom that we can use to createa supportive environment for what wewant in our lives. The practice of feng shuitakes into consideration location, topogra-phy, buildings, shapes, interior balance, furni-ture placement, predecessor energy (whooccupied the space prior to you), colors, elements and energy flow. When a space“feels good,” its feng shui vibratory harmo-ny is high — often referred to as “good”feng shui. When a space “feels bad,” itsvibratory state is likely chaotic — oftenreferred to as “bad” feng shui.
Feng Shui and bathroomsBathrooms are generally thought of as
“bad” feng shui because they have morethan one drain, and water, representingflow and abundance, is flushed away orgoes down the drain in almost everythingyou do, whether using the toilet, washingyour hands, bathing, showering, or brush-
ing your teeth. Although bathrooms are energetically
draining, they also offer a respite from thestress and tension of our daily lives. In thatsense, bathrooms are intimate transitionalrooms, where a dirty body is transformedinto a clean one or a plain face is trans-formed into a radiant one. In the bath-room, we let go of the old, releasing toxinsand sometimes our tears. Ultimately, whether in the home or in a public space, the bathroom is the room that provides
the most privacy. After a long day, we lookto the bathroom to unwind, perhaps bysoaking in a hot tub or taking a refreshingshower. So a lot of emphasis is placed oncreating a comfortable, supportive andpeaceful environment in the bathroom.
Feng shui and Asian themesThe idea that feng shui requires an Asian
theme is probably due to mainstream mar-keting of this ancient art, showing images ofZen gardens, lotus flowers, shoji screens andmeditating Buddha figurines. Feng shui origi-nated in Asia, so Eastern themes can and docome into play; however, at its core, fengshui is a universal nature-based philosophy, focused primarily on our feelings and ourpersonal resonance with the environment.
If your religious or spiritual beliefsinclude Jesus or angels, you can place thosefigurines around you to create a feng shuienvironment that works for you. Asian-looking bamboo fountains or European-looking resin fountains, perhaps withcherubs pouring water, have the samefunction in feng shui. You can replace lotusflowers with roses, Jesus with Buddha, andscenes of a bamboo forest with scenes of
a redwood forest and still create “good”feng shui. The bottom line is that feng shuirequires whatever resonates with you.
Feng shui and interior designWhile both feng shui and interior design
consider aesthetics, feng shui goes one stepfurther to nurture the people in the spaceby using nature-based principles to honorthe universal energetic component thatlinks “All That Is.”
Feng shui is based on the concept thateverything in this universe is connected byan unseen energy, or force, often referredto as “chi,” animating all living things. Thisenergy connects human beings to “All ThatIs,” from the tiniest quark to the vastness ofthe cosmos. With this understanding, fengshui recognizes that, when changes aremade in the home, changes are made out-side the home and in the life of the individ-ual occupying the space. This intention andunderstanding permeates all aspects offeng shui, and, in this one very importantway, sets it apart from interior design.

Find inspiration for your homewith the latest design trendsOne of the best things about the new year is making
a fresh start: Whether it’s an updated fitnessregime, pursuing new hobbies or getting organized,
there is a slew of resolutions to try. In 2013, why not makea few changes to not only yourself, but also your home? Byincorporating cutting-edge design trends, you’ll add styleand color that’s perfect to kick-start the year.
Patterns that pack a punch“No one wants a house that lacks personality,” said
HGTV designer and television personality Taniya Nayak.“The easiest way to infuse your style — while being on-trend — is with an impactful pattern.” According to Nayak, there are a few prints to be on the lookout for in 2013:
• Chevron: a bold, dramatic, V-shaped pattern
• Geometrics: graphic, colorful shapes, delivering a vintage-modern look and feel
• Ombre: subtle color gradation of similar shades that’s
extremely versatile
• Ikat: tribal, swirls and diamonds reminiscent of tie-dye
• Moroccan: culturally-inspired, timeless and exotic motifs
“These powerful patterns can be easily achieved with afresh coat of paint and a premium painter’s tape, likeFrogTape Multi-Surface and Delicate Surface,” addedNayak. “Treated with PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape canbe used to create these new, intricate patterns for a hauteinterior.
When using bold patterns, it’s best to find the right pairingof both the color and the print to not overwhelm your space. For example, if you’re looking to use bright colors, incorpo-rate the patterns onto one accent wall or window treatment.
Look for the unexpected“Just because a product is made for a specific purpose,
doesn’t mean you can’t reimagine how it could be used,”said Nayak. “For example, hanging materials on the wall that
are typically used as flooring can be breathtaking. Woodplanks or concrete panels, featured vertically and not juston the ground, add richness and texture.”
Another great tip to accomplishing this trend is to lookat construction materials in new ways. Molding and panel-ing can add architectural detail well beyond crown moldingand baseboards. Installing framing on a wall and painting itwith complementary paint colors can change the look andfeel of any room. “Unique treatments instantly increase thetexture, depth and visual appeal, without spending a lot of

time or money,” said Nayak. “And the greatest fea-ture is that these updates aren’t permanent, meaningyou can continue to change your space as your style— and home design trends — evolve.”
Finishing touches“The finishing touches are the final way to infuse
personality into your updated space,” added Nayak.Whether it’s utilizing accents like pillows, throws andframes in your favorite colors, or a rug that remindsyou of a beloved piece of clothing, your home willtruly come to life when it depicts who you are in itsdesigns.

If you want a great way to makea big design impact on a smallbudget, mix materials by creat-
ing a blend of polished and raw ina room with modern and industri-al elements.
“The key to updating yourhome with the latest trends is find-ing a balance,” said HGTV designerand television personality TaniyaNayak. “It’s all about making it per-sonal and adding elements that fityour lifestyle and design personali-ty, without breaking the bank.”
The rustic look will be very pop-ular in homes in 2013 because it’selegant and comfortable. “It pro-vides a feeling of richness andwarmth, while still being comfort-able to actually live in the space,”added Nayak. A great material forachieving the industrial and modernlook is reclaimed wood. From
frames, to furniture, this aged, repur-posed wood can bring richness anda dose of style to any space.
Mixing materials also means uti-lizing different finishes throughout aroom. In the kitchen, using contrast-ing materials makes your space lookpersonalized. Try a mix of wood andpainted finishes for a more layeredand collected feel. By resisting theurge to perfectly match every piece, you’ll have a current space.

Decorate with a mix of materials
Ido love home style, but I’m also aclothes hound who loves fashion, which is why we opened The Boutique
at Cathy’s Marketplace. And judging fromhow well you’ve responded to my columnsabout using tricks from your wardrobe toinspire your rooms, I can tell that a lot ofyou love dressing up as well!
This week I’ll show you how to use clas-sic furniture pieces as anchors to transitiona space from a more casual to a more for-mal look, just as you would with clothesfrom your wardrobe.
To illustrate this, I’ve picked out this blackhalter jumpsuit, a classic staple in manywomen’s wardrobes. This look never com-pletely goes out of style, but there aretimes when it’s super hot, and fortunatelynow is one of those times. On our mannequin, this knitSt. John jumpsuit is ready fora night on the town withblack and gold accessoriesand a chunky pearl neck-lace. You might think theonly other accompanimentmight be sky-high heels, butnot true!
How about toning downthe glam for some casualchic? Simply swap out theaccessories with this black-and-white Coach bag, ablack-and-white braceletand kitten heels, and you’vegot an outfit that’s sassy andstylish!
You’re already doing this, right? Well, thesame principles apply to classic pieces inyour home. Although I know some womenwould argue with me, most of us spendmore money on our furnishings than ouroutfits. And large staple pieces aren’t aseasy to change out as a blouse. But whatyou can have fun with are the accents thatgo with these pieces. So I’m not saying
throw out that old sofaor coffee table, justchange out some thingsaround them.
Here I’ve picked outanother classic: a white,down-filled, slip-coveredchair. Its luxurious, subtlystriped fabric has a slightsheen. This chair can go
from natural and earthy to glam andvavoom with just a few easy switches.
For a casual look, I went organic. I chosea pillow whose pattern of birds andbranches ties in to the lamp and otheraccessories on the side table for a scenariothat’s natural, cool, comfortable. If you wantto take it a step further, imagine a sea-grassarea rug beneath the arrangement. Otherthings you could add to an organic vignette
would be bamboosticks in a vase orwooden picture frames.Bringing in whiteaccents would tie inwith the chair and add afresh, beachy feel.
Now, how aboutgoing sophisticated? I’ve
kept the chair but changed out the sidetable for a white ceramic high-gloss onewith a gray faux-fur throw, and liquid-likesilver candlesticks that add just the rightshimmer. And can you imagine a very blingyart deco mirror behind the chair against anaccent wall painted a dark charcoal tobring out the throw? Other elements thatwould enhance the luxe would be reflec-tive accessories with glass or mirror, luxuri-ous fabrics, tone-on-tone colors like whitesand creams or high-contrast wall accentslike deep purple or sealskin.
Quick transformations, same chair : Allyou need to do is change out the acces-sories — just like you do in front of yourown closet every day.

Quality is the top priority for Jimmy Suh, owner ofDeep Purple Painting, when it comes to assistingcustomers with a wide range of painting projects.
“I’ve been painting for 25 years, and my main goal isto produce a quality job — that’s the most importantthing,” Suh said.
In early 2010, Suh moved to Hawaii to be closer tofamily and friends, and brought his successful paintingbusiness with him to the Islands. The contractor spentnearly 20 years in San Francisco building his businessand cultivating a sterling reputation for producing qualityresults. Whether the job involves painting a home’s exterior,or a few walls of a commercial space, Deep Purple Paintinghas it covered.
At the onset of each job, Suh confers with the owner todetermine the necessary steps involved in refinishing thedesired surfaces. The painter and his experienced crewconsider many factors, including the relationships betweencolors and how they compliment one another, and presentthe owner with the viable options. Other aspects that Suhconsiders include the texture of certain surfaces and whatvariety of paint will coat them in a way that both protectsand beautifies for years to come.
Suh has cultivated a host of positive referrals from satis-fied customers — a direct result of his respect for hisclients and their needs. When meeting with Suh, customersare encouraged to view the completed jobs in person inorder to fully understand the stellar workmanship that goes
into every Deep Purple project. After thelook and feel of the project is determined, theclient is presented with a written estimate ofboth the cost of the job as well as a timelinedetailing the work to be performed.
“The word-of-mouth referrals that I receive come fromthe extensive preparation and excellent results fromnumerous jobs, both residential and commercial,” said Suhof many notable projects in both Hawaii and San Francisco.“That’s why people like how I do business.”
Suh has honed his craft for over a quarter century andcan quickly diagnose problems with paint jobs that haveresulted in unsightly chipping and peeling. Suh explained thatthe tedious tasks of priming and smoothing surfaces and fill-ing in any cracks or imperfections with quality patchingmaterials go a long way in ensuring a paint job’s effective-ness. He stressed quality and an honest approach to cus-
tomer service throughout each project he’s involved with.“A painter needs to follow the proper procedures,” Suh
said. “That’s why there are so many problems here inHawaii with painting projects. You need to prime the areaand prepare it properly. It’s worth the price for a premiumpaint job that’s done right the first time, saving time andmoney in the long run.”

The newest phrase on the street for home improve-ment is “garage enhancement,” and it is a great wayto add to your equity without buying or building a
new home. Interestingly, most of us don’t think of ourgarages very much. In fact, many of us don’t think of themas an asset at all.
Research shows that many home sellers and even sales-people for new residential developments do not show thegarage to potential buyers. Typically a garage comprises 20to 30 percent of the footprint of the structure, so to nothave any value-adding design to such a large area is verysurprising.
Perhaps this is because the garage has historicallybeen an empty shell of four walls and a concretefloor. You are lucky if you have drywall, let alonepainted walls in yours. With a garage enhancement, muchvalue can be added — and seen aesthetically, felt ergonom-ically and realized financially.
More times than not, potential home buyers will see a fin-ished garage or “enhanced garage” and choose to buy thatproperty over a property without a garage enhancement. Not only does a garage enhancement increase the value ofyour property, but it can be an asset to your daily life as well.
A garage remodel can create a place with workbenchesand hanging tool storage to efficiently work on hobbies, mechanics and home projects. It also can feature attractivecabinets, flooring that’s easy-to-clean and additional stor-age. An enhanced garage can even be used for overflowentertaining and family gatherings.
To many of us, it seems that our garages have turned intomismanaged and disorganized storage units that are conve-
niently located close to home.Think of a functional garage with an attractive garage
floor that is easy to clean and maintain, and leaves youworry-free from stains, unsightly rough concrete, cracks andoil stains. Now imagine that you can have this revolutionarynew system installed in just one day with a manufacturer’smaterial lifetime warranty not to peel or delaminate. Then, imagine it completely organized with ergonomic customcabinets, work-benches or even an entertainment systemor bar to suit your individual needs.
Lokahi Garage Experts’ products are proudly made in theU.S. and are the most durable coatings and cabinet systemsin the industry — so much so that Lokahi Garage Expertsepoxy coatings and cabinets come with lifetime materialwarranties. Look no further than yourgarage for home equity
Designing your kitchen involves more than just plac-ing boxes on the wall, which is what many of theless expensive cabinet companies do. If you’re going
to invest time and money into your home, then invest thetime to learn about your kitchen designer.
To start with, is your designer asking you what you wantto achieve when remolding your kitchen? Are you lookingfor more space or a more convenient way to access thespace in your kitchen? This is also known as ergonomics: thestudy of designing equipment and devices to fit the humanbody, its movement and its cognitive abilities.
If you have a small kitchen, you’ll want more usable spacethat is easy to access, while allowing the design to flow well.
Is your designer asking you about your budget? And whatdoes it include or not include? Here are some tips on howto answer these questions:
• Make a reasonable budget. Most designers will help bygiving you ideas on what to expect price-wise.
• Make a list of what your budget includes, like cabinets, pulls or knobs, appliances, ect. Just as important, make a listof what it does not like electrical work, plumbing, ect.
• Let the designer know that you are going to get otherquotes with this same list. He or she might try to match orbe under your budget to get the job. Please take note: Is
your budget reasonable and are you looking forlow, medium or high end cabinets? A tip is to ask what kindof warranty comes with the cabinets, what kind of finish ison them and how long it will last in our humid, salty air?
Then, of course, there is style. Are you looking for tradi-tional, modern, contemporary Hawaiian or Island-style?How this is going to complement your house and enrichthe look of your kitchen? This will require showing youmany different cabinet door styles and countertops.
Tenibac Kitchen Cabinets & Casework has more than200 door styles in its showroom. The company specializesin fusing custom cabinets with affordable pricing. The teamat Tenibac has both the design and installation experiencenecessary to help you create what will turn an emptykitchen or an existing space into your dream kitchen to beboth beautiful and functional. YBefore purchasing a new set of cab-inets for your new kitchen or bath-room remodeling project, there are
some important things you should consider.First, keep in mind that cabinets account
for 40 to 50 percent of the total cost ofyour kitchen or bathroom remodel, so set-ting your total budget figure will be one ofthe first things you’ll need to do.
Are stock cabinets for you?Stock cabinets are the least expensive
option and are constructed in standardshapes and sizes; however, they are avail-able in a limited number of woods or fin-ishes and offer few style options beyondbasic drawers and cupboards.
If you plan on living in your home for onlya short time or are working with a tightbudget, stock cabinets are your best bet.But if this is going to be the kitchen or bathof your dreams, you should look for top-quality construction and materials foundwith semi-custom and custom cabinets.
Versatility of semi-customSemi-custom cabinets are factory-built
in standard sizes with many options forstorage, design and style. The high end ofcabinet construction is custom cabinets, which are constructed in either a work-room to designer specifications or on-sitein any style and finish you choose.
Semi-custom and custom cabinets pro-vide endless solutions to your storage
needs: pullout shelves for pots and pans; alazy Susan for spices; a wine rack; verticaldividers for trays and cookie sheets; evenan appliance garage or pullout bins are alljust some of the standard add-ons availablewhen ordering these higher-end cabinets.
And if your space is too narrow for acabinet and counter, a tall pantry closet
provides lots of space for pots and pans inthe kitchen or towels in the bath.
Make quality your first choice No matter what type of cabinet you
select, all cabinets should have solid frames, door and drawer fronts, reinforced cornersand closed backs, and the finish on thewood should be smooth.
Also, cabinet drawers and doors will beopened and closed many times throughoutthe day, so they should operate smoothlyand quietly each time.
Cabinets help establish a moodFinally, remember that the cabinets you
select will set the tone of your new kitchenor bathroom and play a major role in trans-forming your space.
Browse magazines and stores to get anidea for what suits you. Look for styles thatblend well with the architecture of yourhome as well as the interior design ofother rooms. But don’t get bogged downby all of these decisions.
Elite Design Group LLC offers free esti-mates and consultations for kitchen andbathroom remodeling projects, and its pro-fessional in-house kitchen designer canhelp you realize the perfect set of cabinetsfor your home.
