SMED stands forSingle-Minute Exchange of Die.

SMED system is a set of techniques thatmakes it possible to perform equipmentset up and change over operation inunder 10 minutes in the single-minuterange.

SMED approach is Simple & Universal

    WHAT IS SMED ?

Goal of SMED is to dramaticallyshortenchangeover times

It may not be possible to reach thesingle-minute range for all setups, but

    SMED does dramatically reduce setup

    times in almost all cases.

    Stage1: Separating Internal and External

    Setup

The most important step in implementing SMED is

distinguishing between internal and externalsetup. By doing obvious things like preparationand transport while the machine is running, thetime needed for internal setup, with the machinestopped, can be usually cut by as much as 30 to50 percent.

    Stage2:Converting Internal Setup to ExternalSetup

Further reducing setup time toward the single-minute range involves two important activities:

    1) reexamining operations to see whether any

steps are wrongly assumed to be internal setup,&

    2) finding ways to convert these steps to externalsetup.

Operations can often be converted to external setupby looking at their true function.

Step 3: Streamlining All Aspects of the

    Setup Operation

To further reduce setup time, the basic

elements of each setup are analyzed in detail. Specific principles are applied to shorten the

time needed, especially for steps that must bedone as internal setup, with the machine

    stopped.
