The Spirit of God, as it comes into the heart by faith, is the
beginning of the life eternal. What promise is less fulfilled
in the church than that of the endowment of the Holy
Spirit? Here is our greatest need. Let the spirit ofcontroversy be put away, and let us seek for the living
testimony of the Spirit of God.Ellen G. White, Review & Herald, February 9, 1892.
Jesus showed Nicodemus that his first need was
humility of heart, a teachable spirit, a new heart; that if he
would enter into the kingdom of God, he must be born
again.Ellen G. White, Counsels on Sabbath School Work, p. 65.
The result of the eating of the tree of knowledge of good
and evil is manifest in every mans experience. There is in
his nature a bent to evil, a force which, unaided, he cannot
resist. To withstand this force, to attain that ideal which in
his inmost soul he accepts as alone worthy, he can find
help in but one power. That power is Christ. Cooperationwith that power is mans greatest need.Ellen G. White, Education, p. 29.
Gods greatest gift was bestowed to meet mans greatest
need. The Light appeared when the worlds darkness was
deepest. Through false teaching the minds of men had
long been turned away from God Christ came to restorethis knowledge. He came to set aside the false teaching by
which those who claimed to know God had
misrepresented Him.Ellen G. White, Education, p. 74.
A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and
most urgent of all our needs. To seek this should be our
first work.Ellen G. White, Review & Herald, March 22, 1887.

Lesson Impact...Briefly share what points stood out for you in the lesson or
how the lesson study has influenced you.
Quotes...Give light, and the darkness will disappear of itself.Desiderius Erasmus
A true revival means nothing less than a revolution, casting
out the spirit of worldliness and selfishness, and making God
and His love triumph in the heart and life.Andrew Murray
Revival cannot be organized, but we can set our sails to
catch the wind from heaven when God chooses to blow upon
His people once again.G. Campbell Morgan
Revival begins in the individuals heart. Let it begin with youon your face alone before God. Turn from every sin that
might hinder. Renew yourself to a new devotion to the
Saviour.Lee Roberson
I see no hope for a revival among Gods people today. They
are so enamored and so cluttered up with Hollywood and
newspapers and magazines and parties and bowling alleys
and camping trips and everything else. How in the world are
they going to get still long enough to see anything from
God?Lester Roloff
If revival is being withheld from us it is because some idol
remains still enthroned; because we still insist in placing ourreliance in human schemes; because we still refuse to face the

unchangeable truth that, It is not by might, but by My

Primitive Godliness...Prayerfully read Revelation 3:20.
What does this verse reveal to you about the nature of
Christ?
As earth's final generation, of what importance is this
verse to you?
What practical assurances does this verse give you in
relation to your quest to be ready for Christ's soon
coming?
A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest andmost urgent of all our needs. To seek this should be our
first work. There must be earnest effort to obtain the
blessing of the Lord, not because God is not willing to
bestow His blessing upon us, but because we are
unprepared to receive it. Our heavenly Father is more
willing to give His Holy Spirit to them that ask Him, than
are earthly parents to give good gifts to their children. Butit is our work, by confession, humiliation, repentance, and
earnest prayer, to fulfil the conditions upon which God has
promised to grant us His blessing. A revival need be
expected only in answer to prayer.Ellen G. White, Selected Messages, Vol. 1, p. 121.
A revival and a reformation must take place, under the
ministration of the Holy Spirit. Revival and reformation are

two different things. Revival signifies a renewal of spiritual
life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a
resurrection from spiritual death. Reformation signifies a
reorganization, a change in ideas and theories, habits andpractices. Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit
of righteousness unless it is connected with the revival of
the Spirit. Revival and reformation are to do their
appointed work, and in doing this work they must blend.Ellen G. White, Review & Herald, February 25, 1902.
Before the final visitation of Gods judgements upon the
earth there will be among the people of the Lord such arevival of primitive godliness as has not been witnessed
since apostolic times. The Spirit and power of God will be
poured out upon His children. At that time many will
separate themselves from those churches in which the
love of this world has supplanted love for God and His
Word. Many, both of ministers and people, will gladly
accept those great truths which God has caused to be
proclaimed at this time to prepare a people for the Lords
second coming.Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, pp. 463, 464.

Read prayerfully Colossians 1:13-17, Hebrews 1:2-3, and
Matthew 10:28.
What do you discover about the power of Christ?
Being faithful to Christ will cost you your life or cause you
to be rejected and ridiculed by family, friends, and the
world. What practical assurances do these passages give
you?
Carefully read Galatians 6:14-15 and Revelation 3:14-16.
What do these passages reveal to you about the nature of
Christ and the plan of Salvation in Christ?
What practical impact do these passages have on your
life?
The typical Laodicean[lukewarm]Christian is content withthings as they are and proud of the little progress he has
made. It is almost impossible to convince him of his great
need and of how far he is from the goal of perfection.SDA Bible Commentary, Vol. 7, 2sted., p.761.
Paul could boast about the Cross because of what the
Cross had accomplished in his life.
Life Application New Testament Commentary, Wordsearch 9 Software, on Gal. 6:14.
Reread Revelation 3:15-16.
The rebuke given to the Laodiceans is as strong as it
comes. Notice that God uses language with which the
Laodiceans could resonate. Two other towns near
Laodicea had their own unique water sources. Hierapolis
to the north claimed natural hot springs, which were often

used for medicinal purposes. To the east, Colossae was
known for its cold, pure water springs. Laodicea piped
water from both sources, but by the time it arrived, both
the water was lukewarm.
The metaphor Jesus uses is not necessarily relating
spiritual fervor to temperature, as often understood. If it
were, it would mean He was commending them for being
spiritually cold, which is unlikely. Instead, the metaphor is
condemning Laodicea for not providing spiritual healing
(being hot) or spiritual refreshment (being cold) to those
around them. It is a rebuke of their lack of works (action)and lack of witness.Limited Notes NET Bible, New English Translation, Revelation 3:15.
It is important to remember that Gods rebukes and
discipline is always in the context of a loving, parent-child
relationship. This can be seen as you read Proverbs 13:34,
Revelation 3:19, and Hebrews 12:7-11.
if we have respect toward our earthly fathers for
disciplining us, how much more should we embrace and
submit to our heavenly Fathers discipline (Hebrews 12:9)?
When it comes to Gods loving rebuke of His Laodicean
people, we must remember Gods ultimate will for us: to
be like Him. It is never to condemn us or cut us off. It isalways to bring us to repentance so that we can be even
more intimately tied to our Savior than before.
Repentance puts you more closely in touch with Him and
more fully releases His life through yours.Dr. Larry Crabb, 66 Love Letters (Nashville, Tenn.: Thomas Nelson, 2010), p. 319.
Prayerfully read 2 Corinthians 1:20 and 1 Peter 1:6-7.

What stands out to you about the nature of God?
What practical assurance do you find in these passages?
Believing in and holding on to His promises is key to
experiencing His power during the last days of earth's
history.
Practical Steps...Read 1 Timothy 1:15-16 and 2 Timothy 4:8.
What deliberate steps can you take toward the Lord so
that your relationship with Him will revive you?
STEP ONE: Luke 22:39-23:49
Realize the great price God paid for our redemption.Spend time really thinking about what it would feel like to
have someone give his or her life to save yours.
STEP TWO: Psalms 32:8; 55:17; 119:11
Read Gods love letter, the Bible, and talk with Him
every day.
Let Him work in you to change your thoughts and heart.
STEP THREE: John 3:16
Realize that each person we come in contact with is
someone for whom Christ died.
Everyone deserves to know about what Christ has done
for them.
STEP FOUR: 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
-
7/28/2019 01 Revival - OUR GREAT NEED
10/15
Realize that we cant save anyone in our own strength,
but only through the strength of Jesus.
Jesus can work through the Holy Spirit on our behalf only
when we realize just how weak we are.
In Need of a Doctor...?Read Revelation 3:17.
What is the problem with the Laodicean church?
Being lukewarm is a symptom of a deep-rooted disease
self-righteousness. Self-righteousness is the very thing
that prevents a church from experiencing revival. Let us
wake up and call upon the Doctor, Jesus Christ.
Throughout the Gospels, Christ demonstrates His healing
power to those who come to Him.
Read Matthew 9:12, who needs the doctor?
Read Revelation 2:4, what is the solution to being
lukewarm?
Read 1 Peter 2:24, what does this verse mean to you?
When we study the Bible and contemplate the life, death,
and resurrection of Christ, our sins glare at us in piercing
contrast to His perfection. The more exalted view we have
of Him, the less exalted view we have of ourselves. When
we see His glory, we begin to see our need. This sense of
need will drive us straight to Him and His cureHis blood,
shed on the cross for every sinner. By his wounds youhave been healed.

Conclusion...Jesus says, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears
my voice and opens the door, I will come in. He is waiting
to heal you. Allow Him to come in and cure your self-
righteous heart. Come back to your first love, and He will
transform you into His likeness. He will clothe you with His
garments of righteousness. He promises that to him who
overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my
throne.

LESSONS ON FAITHLESSON #13: LIVING BY FAITH
(Living by Faith)
Living by Faith

"The just shall live by faith."
Who are the just?--They are only those who are of faith, because
men are justified only by faith.
For though we all "have sinned and come short of the glory of
God," yet we are justified freely by his grace through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus."
For "to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace,
but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him
that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted forrighteousness."
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ." Those who are of faith and those
alone are the just in the earth.
Now faith is entire dependence on the word of God, that that
word shall accomplish what that word says. "It shall accomplishthat which I please." Isa. 55:11.
To be justified by faith, then, is to be justified by entire
dependence upon the word of God. The just are those who are
of the word of God. This is how men become just.
Men must not only become just by faith--by dependence uponthe word of Godbut being just, we must live by faith. The just

man lives in precisely the same way and by precisely the same
thing that he becomes just.
We become just by faith; faith is entire dependence on the wordof God. We, being just, must live by precisely the same thing by
which we become just; that is, by entire dependence upon the
word of God.
And this is exactly what Jesus said: Man shall live "by every word
that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." When Jesus said that,
it is perfectly plain that He simply said, in other words, Man shall
live by faith.
There is no other way truly to live than by faith, which is simply
living by the word of God. Without faith, without the word of
God, men only die.
Indeed, without the word of God everything only dies, for in the
beginning everything came by the word of God. The word ofGod is the origin and life of everything, for, "He spake, and it
was."
All things animate and inanimate--sun, moon, and stars, animals
and men--all are entirely dependent upon the word of God for
existence. Only in the case of men God has bestowed upon them
the wondrous gift of choice as to whether they will do so or not.
This gift opens the door of faith. And when a man does choose
to live by the word of God, which is the only means of life, faith--
entire dependence upon the word of Godis the means by
which he lays hold on the means of life.
Thus "the just shall live by faith," and thus "whatsoever is not of
faith is sin," which is simply to say, The just must live by the word
of God, and whatsoever is not of the word of God is sin.

"We cannot have a healthy Christian experience, we cannot obey
the gospel unto salvation until the science of faith is better
understood and until more faith is exercised."
"Hast thou faith?" Have the faith of God. Here are they that keep
"the faith of Jesus."
