“PUPPET ON A CHAIN”, based on Alistair Maclean’s brilliantly successful novel, is the tense and thrilling story of one man’s dangerous fight against a vast and highly efficient drug ring. For the film Kurt Unger assembled a top international cast, which includes Sven-Bertil Taube from Sweden, Barbara Parkins from America, Canadian Alexander Knox, English Patrick Allen, Polish-born Vladek Sheybal and Ania Marson, Greek-born Penny Casdagli and Dutch and character actors in supporting roles.

Excitingly masculine Sven-Bertil Taube plays indestructible hero, U.S. narcotics agent Paul Sherman. A well-known star in Sweden, this is Taube’s second English-speaking film, the first being “The Buttercup Chain”. An athletic man, handy with a gun and

very much at home on the water (he owns his own yacht) he needed every ounce of energy for the physically demanding role. Although doubles were on hand for the many dangerous sequences, Taube mostly insisted on doing them himself. Prior to the start of filming he spent a month in Washington, undergoing training with the U.S. Bureau of Narcotics. They taught him the special handling of a gun, the frisking of suspects from behind and how an agent would handle an all-out fight.

Cool beauty Barbara Parkins plays the part of Maggie, Taube’s assistant who comes to a spectacular end in her bid to track down the leader of the drug ring. With five years as the star of the popular television series “Peyton Place” behind her, and two major film

roles, Miss Parkins has become one of the most sought-after young stars on the film horizon.

Alexander Knox and Patrick Allen team as the policemen in charge of the drug ring investigation, and Vladek Sheybal gives perhaps his most chilling performance to date as the demonic priest Meegeren. Filmed on location in Amsterdam, the picturesque island of Marken, and in the 17th century Manderschloss Castle, “Puppet On A Chain” was produced by Kurt Unger, and directed by Geoffrey Reeve, with the breathtaking boat chase and additional sequences directed by Don Sharp. With a screenplay by Alistair Maclean and additional material by Paul Wheeler and Don Sharp, the Kurt Unger Production was filmed in Technicolor.

One of the highlights of “Puppet On A Chain” is a breathtaking speedboat chase through the maze of canals of Amsterdam, the main locale of the picture. It took a full month to film this unique scene, which involved some hair-raising escapes, and demanded special permission from the Amsterdam police. Speed on the canals is normally limited but for “Puppet On A Chain” the action demanded high speed, sharp turns, and even jumps as the two speedboats raced under the city’s low bridges, throwing spray over the sides of the canals. Several hours prior to shooting, the Amsterdam police toured the banks of the canals, warning people not to be alarmed by the chase which could easily have been taken for a real-life pursuit.

Only two boats were called for in

the chase, the yellow boat driven by Sven-Bertil Taube, a Shakespeare Sportsman production ski boat, 13ft 6 long, built in fibreglass and powered by a 50HP Mercury motor, and the blue boat driven by Vladek Sheybal, a Eurocraft powered by a Mercury engine. However, during the actual filming of this sequence, the unit used up seven boats and twelve motors as the craft with their fibreglass bodies smashed against walls or sank in the shallow water. In some cases two boats had to be used to film the same scene – one with a shallow draft, the other with the normal fin, which tended to break off when the boat made a dangerous jump.

Other pursuit scenes were filmed on the Zuyder Zee and were covered by a camera in a helicopter.
