James Barnes
for Concert Band, Op. 155
James Barnes’ contribuon to the band repertoire over the last half century can hardly be overstated. His numerous works for concert band and orchestra are extensively performed throughout the world, in such venues as Tanglewood, Boston Symphony Hall, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow and the Tokyo Metropolitan Concert Hall. Barnes twice received the coveted American Bandmasters Associaon Ostwald Award, and has been the recipient of annual ASCAP Awards for composers of serious music for over 30 years, along with other numerous honors and grants. The world-famous Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra recorded three compact discs of his music. Barnes is disnguished by having received commissions from all five of the major American military bands in Washington,
DC. James Barnes is Professor Emeritus of Music Theory and Composion at the University of Kansas.
The work opens with a dramatic brass fanfare before moving to a spirited allegro. The slower middle portion is rather "jazzy" in character with a trumpet solo. After several statements of this lush song, the faster music returns before the opening fanfare reprises, closing the piece in dramatic fashion. Includes generous cross-cuing to enable performances with smaller instrumentations.

About the Music
In 2015, James Barnes was commissioned by his long-time friend C.L. Snodgrass to compose a work to
commemorate the 100th anniversary of his Clay Center (KS) Municipal Band. Clay Center is a special little town in
North Central Kansas. Along with being a beautiful, well-kept city of about 3,000, it has a long-running reputation for
having excellent school bands. Their town band, which was originally organized in 1916, has performed each summer
for many years in a permanent outdoor shell in Dexter Park.
Barnes composed Dexter Park Celebration in March 2016. The composer conducted the premiere in July 2016
in front of an audience of over 1,000 people. The work opens with a dramatic brass fanfare before moving to a spirited
allegro. The slower middle portion of the work is rather "jazzy" in character, with a trumpet solo intended to be a
tribute to C.L. Snodgrass, who is a fine jazz trumpet player. After several settings of this lush "jazz song," the faster
music is restated before the opening fanfare briefly returns to help end the work in highly dramatic fashion.
As in other Barnes works at this grade level, the piccolo, second oboe, second bassoon, contra-alto clarinet,
third trombone and double bass are all optional, so the work can be played by bands with limited instrumentation.
About the Composer
Professor Emeritus James Barnes, Chair of the Division of
Theory-Composition at the University of Kansas, taught orchestration,
arranging and composition courses, and wind band history and repertoire
courses. At KU, he served as an Assistant, and later, as Associate
Director of Bands for 27 years.
His numerous publications for concert band and orchestra are
extensively performed in the United States, Europe and the Pacific
Basin. His works have been performed at Tanglewood, Boston
Symphony Hall, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center
in Washington, DC.
Barnes has twice received the coveted American Bandmasters
Association Ostwald Award for outstanding contemporary wind band
music. He has been the recipient of numerous ASCAP Awards for
composers of serious music, the Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguished Service
to Music Medal, the Bohumil Makovsky Award for Outstanding College Band Conductors, along with numerous
other honors and grants.
He has recorded three commercial compact discs of his music with the world famous Tokyo Kosei Wind
Orchestra. He has also been commissioned to compose works for all five of the major military bands in Washington,
DC. Mr. Barnes has traveled extensively as a guest composer, conductor, and lecturer throughout the United States,
Europe, Australia, Japan and Taiwan. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers
(ASCAP), the American Bandmasters Association and several other professional organizations and societies. Since
1984, his music has been published by Southern Music Company.
