Dear Missouri Music Educators:

It is with tremendous pride that I write this letter of introduction for the Saint LouisWind Symphony’s performance today. Having been intimately involved with thefounding, growth, vision, and execution of this magnificent organization, I considerthis a wonderful opportunity to “toot” their proverbial horn. From the outset thephilosophy, mission statement and goals of the Saint Louis Wind Symphony werelofty, but today they define the very character of the wind symphony.

Founded in 1998 as an outlet for first-rate musicians to come together to perform thefinest wind literature available, the philosophy has always been to promote windliterature as a serious artistic medium. Promising only four rehearsals for eachconcert, we attracted the finest wind and percussion players in the St. Louismetropolitan area, as well as from western Illinois.

The goals of the Saint Louis Wind Symphony include contributing to the expansionof the wind repertoire, and we have done that through numerous premiers andcommissions which are listed on the back cover. Another goal was to integrate ourmusic making into the community we serve, so our schedule includes combinedconcerts with high schools, colleges, military bands, Christmas concerts, patrioticconcerts, and summer pops concerts. Educational opportunities include theGoldstein Scholarship for talented high school French Horn players, and this pastyear saw the birth of the Youth Ensemble under the direction of Gary Brandes andAndy Messerli.

The Saint Louis Wind Symphony has now entered a new era. My decision to stepaway in 2016 was not an easy one, especially since this was the culmination of acareer-long goal, but knowing that Tom Poshak and Gary Brandes were there to takethe reins made that decision possible. Both gentlemen are exemplary musicians with adepth of knowledge, insight, and conducting expertise that will undoubtedly keep theSaint Louis Wind Symphony on its upward trajectory. I will enjoy watching theircreative vision take shape from the sidelines, and I’ll continue to be an avid supporterand their biggest cheerleader.

To today’s wonderful audience of esteemed music educators, “Thank You” for thisopportunity to share with you our love of music.

Sincerely,

Dan Presgrave, Founder and Director Emeritus,Saint Louis Wind Symphony

The Saint Louis Wind Symphony is dedicated to preserving and performingquality wind band music, supporting music education,

and commissioning new works.

The Saint Louis Wind Symphony is honored to perform for you today at the 80th Annual Missouri MusicEducators Association In-Service Workshop/Conference. We are an all-volunteer, 65-member ensemblestaffed by musicians from across Missouri and Illinois. All of us are beneficiaries of music education. Themajority of the ensemble’s membership consists of current and former music educators who believe that theimportance of music is demonstrated not only by passing the knowledge of it on to others but also byparticipating in its creation.

“One of Our Own” is the theme for our 20th season, an anniversary year, and we planned a celebration! TheSaint Louis Wind Symphony is blessed with talented musicians and vital connections to our larger musiccommunity, all of which factor into this season. Each regular season concert features “one of our own” assoloist. The premiere of two new compositions will bookend the season, the first in October from a composerwithin our ranks, and the second in March from a rising, young, Midwestern composer.

Each program is filled with a variety of the best classic and contemporary wind band music. In October wefeatured our principal oboist, CathyWoelbling-Paul, as soloist in theMarcello Concerto in C Minor, thepremiere ofDallas Blair’s Symphonic Suite, and an early composition by our Composer-in-Residence,Dr. Jared Spears.

In November, trumpet soloist,Dr. Lisa Blackmore, performedDaniel Eichenbaum’s Concertino forTrumpet andWind Ensemble, which was commissioned for her and University of Missouri-St. Louis WindEnsemble. In February,Dr. Shelly Monier, will be flute soloist for the Concerto for Flute &Wind Orchestraby Mike Mower. Additionally Steve Repking (flute), Ginger Tice (clarinet), and Shelley Layton (saxophone)will be soloists for Claude T. Smith's Suite for Flute, Clarinet, and Saxophone. We will also welcomebackDan Presgrave, Founder and Director Emeritus, to conduct in February. Our March soloist willbe Bob Baumann doing the Artie Shaw Concerto for Clarinet. This concert also includes the premiereof Robert Langenfeld’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble.

In addition this season includes diverse opportunities to fulfill ourmission of preserving and performingquality wind band music, supporting music education and commissioning new works. In November wereturned to East Central College in Union, MO, followed in December with a holiday collaborationpresented jointly with the ReBELLion Handbell Choir. In April 2018 we will present a shared concert withand for the Central Visual and Performing Arts High School. The Youth Ensemble and GoldsteinScholarship Winner will be back in March 2018 as part of our Educational Outreach.

He would go up to a man ploughing and askif he knew any songs and as often as not the man would stand for a minute or two and sing him a song in the mostnatural way in the world." The Duke of Marlborough is such a song, sung by Henry Brustow of Sussex, England.

Symphony No. 3 “The Tragic”, Op. 89 - James BarnesFinale - Allegro giocosoSouthern Music Company

James Barnes (b. 1949) studied composition and music theory at the University of Kansas (KU), earning aBachelor of Music in 1974, and Master of Music in 1975. At KU, he served as Staff Arranger, Assistant, and later,Associate Director of Bands for twenty-seven years. In 2015, he completed his fortieth year of teaching at KU andis presently Professor Emeritus. He has twice received the American Bandmasters Association Ostwald Award forcontemporary wind band music. In 1994 The U. S. Air Force Band commissioned Barnes to write a major workfor wind band. The conductor, Colonel Alan Bonner, said he didn't care about the style, length, difficulty oranything else – he just wanted a major work for concert band. The result is a challenging tour de forcecomposition that features every section of the band. Barnes started working on his Third Symphony at a verydifficult time in his life, right after his baby daughter Natalie died. The composer said, "This Symphony is the mostemotionally draining work that I have ever composed. If it were to be given a nickname, I believe that 'tragic'would be appropriate." James Barnes writes this about the piece: "The fourth movement finale represents a rebirthof spirit, reconciliation for us all. The second theme of this movement is based on an old Lutheran children'shymn called I am Jesus' Little Lamb. This hymn was sung at Natalie's funeral." Three days after Barnes completedthis symphony, his son Bill was born. The composer said, "If the third movement is for Natalie, then the finale isreally for Bill, and our joy in being blessed with him after the tragic death of his sister."
