RE: Design Team Status Report Statewide Library Archives Museum January 2011

    1) Progress to Date

1.1) The design team is well past the half point in schematic (35%) design, with completion of schematic design scheduled for midMarch.

    2) Accomplishments During Reporting Period 2.1) Centennial Museum Historic Significance: A 30day public comment period related to

the historic significance of the existing Centennial Museum was completed. After careful review of all public comments, a decision was made by the Department of Education to continue with the project on the approved site, including demolition of the existing Centennial Museum. Since the plans call for an adverse affect on a historically significant building, the Department of Education will work closely with the Department of Natural Resources and the public to determine appropriate mitigation.

2.2) Schematic Design Workshop: A 3day workshop was held in Juneau on January 1113. 2.3) Geotechnical Explorations: A preliminary geotechnical report was issued in mid

January. The engineering team is using the preliminary information to develop appropriate foundation systems.

    3) Planned Activities in Upcoming Reporting Period

3.1) Schematic Design Report: A draft schematic design (35%) report will be issued on February 24. This will initiate parallel cost estimates by the design team and general

contractor concurrent with a preliminary review of the schematic design. Draft cost estimates are anticipated on March 14. A final schematic design report will be issued no later than March 24. The schematic design report will include descriptions of proposed building systems (mechanical, electrical, structural), lifecycle cost projections, site development plans and imagery from the architectural model that will provide a basis for the Building Information Model.

3.2) Exhibit Design: Exhibit design will move to the forefront during a workshop in midMarch. Presently information is being gathered in preparation for that workshop.

The Statewide Advisory Committee has been asked to help develop themes and stories for the exhibits.

3.3) Digital Archives: Also in midMarch, work will begin on upgrades to digital archives protocol. These efforts will lead to improvements to the digital access portals, both

public and inter agency. 3.4) Geotech: Monitoring of ground wells continues in order to determine ground water levels during high tides.

3.5) Replat: The proposed replat will be submitted to the City Borough of Juneau for formal review. The replat will remove internal property lines from the site.

3.6) AkLA Conference in Juneau: A break out session will be held during the Alaska Library Association Annual Conference on February 18 to discuss the topic Integration, What Does it Mean.

3.7) Outreach Activities: Upon request, meetings are being arranged to provide factual information about the project to incoming Commissioners, the CBJ Assembly, and members of the legislature.

    4) Challenges Encountered and Proposed Solution

4.1) No significant new challenges were encountered during the reporting period.

    5) Design Schedule and Budget

5.1) Overall Schedule: Schematic Design is approximately 60% complete, with a draft report scheduled for completion on February 24. Subsequent milestones are as follows:

    5.1.1) Final SD (35%) Report & Cost Estimate: March 24, 2011 5.1.2) Final DD (65%) Report & Cost Estimate: September 9, 2011 5.1.3) Final CD (100% ) Drawings & Specs: April 8, 2012
