  • OUR PARISH MISSION St. Gregory the Great

    Mission Statement

St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS - Every Friday during Lent, the Stations of the Cross will be offered after the 8:30a.m. Mass in the Church. The Stations of the Cross will also be offered on Good Friday, Apr.19 at 3p.m. DYNAMIC CATHOLIC BEST LENT EVER REFLECTIONS - The Dynamic Catholic Institute has prepared a series of daily reflections for Lent. Go to www.DynamicCatholic.com/Lent and sign up to receive a daily Lenten reflection. MAGNIFICAT LENTEN COMPANION – All parishioners are invited to take a free copy of the Magnificat Lenten Companion – a booklet which offers a daily reflection on all the weekdays and Sundays of Lent and Holy Week. They will be available on the Usher’s Tables and at the North Courtyard ramp entrance. KOLBE HOUSE JAIL MINISTRY - Kolbe House, a ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago, provides pastoral care to those imprisoned in Cook County Jail. To support the ministry of Kolbe House, we will be collecting items that can be given to prisoners in Cook County Jail. They need the following full size or travel size toiletries of toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, mouthwash, deodorant and liquid body wash. There will be a box near the baptismal font where you can leave these items. CRS RICE BOWL - The first weekend of Lent, Mar. 9-10, cardboard banks will be available in Church to support CRS Rice Bowl. Participants are invited to fill their banks with spare change to support Catholic Relief Services which provides emergency relief services to people in need around the world. The banks should be returned the Palm Sunday weekend, Apr. 13-14. TAIZE PRAYER SERVICE On Sunday, March 17, we will be hosting a Taizé Prayer service beginning at 4p.m. in Church. Taizé prayer involves simple chanting in the Taizé style, a Scripture reading, intercessory prayer, and an opportunity for silent prayer and reflection before an icon of Jesus, Mary or one of the saints. If you have never experienced this form of prayer before, please consider joining us. This month we will pray before an icon of St. Joseph.

LENTEN MOVIE - Sunday, Mar. 24, we will be showing our Lenten movie at 3p.m. in the basement of the Parish Center. The movie is taken from the Catholicism DVD series of Bishop Robert Barron entitled World Without End: The Last Things which focus on what Catholics believe about heaven, purgatory, hell, angels and devils. It also looks at how this life is a preparation for an extraordinary world yet to come. SOUP & SCRIPTURE – LENTEN BIBLE STUDY ON THE PASSION NARRATIVES We have a spiritual enrichment treat for you at St. Gregory’s - a Lenten Bible Study. We will be traveling through the four Passion Narratives that we find in the four Gospels. These Passion Narratives are extremely rich, and each shed a unique light on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. We will gather in the basement meeting room of the Parish Center after the 10:30am Mass from March 10th thru April 14th. A light Lenten lunch of soup, bread and beverage will be served, and our sessions will be an hour in length. You are encouraged to attend all six sessions, but if you cannot do so, please come for those sessions at which you are available.

Parishioner Tom Kosnik will be our guide. Tom has a Masters of Divinity from Catholic Theological Union, spent several months studying scripture in the Holy Land and has many years of facilitating Bible study programs of various kinds. Treat yourself to something special this Lent and join us for the Lenten Bible Study Series on the Passion Narratives. Mar. 10, How to read the Bible; Mar. 17, the Passion according to Mark; Mar. 24, the Passion according to Matthew; Mar. 31, the Passion according to Luke; Apr. 7, the Passion according to John; Apr. 14, Cistercian insights on the Passion.
