Multifocal IOLs The way to go
Do you think near vision is the same as reading
vision? If yes, you are younger than forty years
and have not experienced presbyopia. If some-
one is trying to read the menu at dinner by holding it far
away or hols the Tam bola in an extended hand, he knows
what the difficulties of reading without glasses are.
For instance, Mr. Verma had developed cataract and
planned cataract surgery and intra-ocular lens
implant(IOL). I recommended Multifocal lenses that give
good vision for both near and distance, over the standard
mono-focal IOL for distance only. With standard IOLs one
need glasses for near work. Verma said, "None of my
friends have multifocal lens. I don't mind using reading
glasses. Give me mono-focal lens".
Mr. Verma regained normal vision for distance. His
reading vision was perfect with glasses. However, he soon
realized that his dependence on glasses was lot more than
what he had thought. He could not shave without his
reading glasses, could not see the time from his watch,
type an SMS or even count change or open the lock
without his reading glasses. He regrets not having
multifocal lenses.
Near vision is notjust reading vision. Even while sitting
at the dining table, you need reading glasses to see the
menu or your plate. Applying lipstick or bindi will not be
possible without reading glasses. The needs and situa
tions are numerous for different people. That is where
multifocal IOL comes in. They reduce your dependence on
glasses. Harnek Singh shares his experience as, "Actually
my wife had got operated for both the eyes only for long
distance. She complained every time before wearing
glasses for reading and writing. From her experience I
decided to go for Multifocal lenses. Every time I read
newspaper without glasses she must pass some com
ments, sometimes its jealousy, other times regret for not
going in for Multifocals. I strongly recommend multifocal
IOL to those with cataract and who are planning on
surgery."
Have a Multifocla IOL, or hang a pair of glasses around
your neck, or keep searching for them, choice is yours. •
