Did you Know? The most famous of all British pop bands, and maybe in the world, “The Beatles” were once known as “Johnny and the Moondogs.” Johnny was, of course, John Lennon. He legally changed his middle name from Winston (after Winston Churchill) to Ono in honour of his then girlfriend and later wife, Yoko Ono.

Brooksby NewsIn Memoriam – Reg Anslow

Reg at his farewell presentation party from Hodnet & District Garden Club 2013.

A former member of the Hoby and district community, Reg Anslow died on 3rd September aged 88 years. A graduate of Reading University. Reg came to Brooksby Agricultural College in 1968 as senior warden and crop production lecturer. Previously he had been engaged in research in Mauritius and at the Grassland Research Institute at Hurley. For the next ten years Reg and his wife Pam were very much involved in the community life of Hoby. Reg was a vice-chairman of the Hoby & District Horticultural Society and Pam was a stalwart of the Women’s Institute and a talented flower-arranger. Both regularly attended Brooksby Church where Reg served as churchwarden. He was extremely well-known in the wider farming

community especially as the secretary of the Leicestershire Grassland Society.

After Brooksby Reg became head of crop production at Harper Adams College (now University) in Shropshire. Pam had very much looked forward to moving into her own house after living in tied accommodation since her marriage and it was with great sadness that we heard of her sudden passing only months after they left Leicestershire. In retirement, Reg continued to play a full part in the life of Marchamley and Hodnet, as chair of the village hall committee, opening his garden in aid of the church and winning prizes or judging at the local horticultural show. His daughter, Claire Chatham (daughter-in-law of a former rector of Hoby, the Revd Richard Chatham), reports that her father’s health had been deteriorating for the past five years but he had been managing at home until four months ago, still driving and living independently. Latterly he was in residential care at Cheswardine Hall which looked out over a herd of dairy cattle and the countryside where he had grown up. Reg was a modest man with a very dry sense of humour who was an influence for good for the communities in which he lived, for the thousands of students and for colleagues like me who greatly benefited from his kindness and wisdom in the early days of their careers. Our sympathy goes out to Claire, Mark and Jane and Reg’s wider family. Malcolm Britton

The end of an era……….. Nick Marriott and Bridget Hollis retired from Brooksby Melton College recently. Nick joined the college staff 35 years ago as a lecturer in agriculture and played an integral part in the college’s work with schools and also in the development of countryside management courses. In recent years he has lived at Hall Farm as the college’s estate manager with responsibility for the farm and the college grounds. Bridget had connections with the college when she worked at county hall in the early 1970s. In later years she conducted school visits and, more recently, was a lecturer in foundation studies. Bridget also represented the staff on the Board of Governors It is due to Nick’s and Bridget’s hard work behind the scenes, that we have held 11 very enjoyable lambing services at Hall Farm. We are very grateful to them both for this and for the other ways in which they have supported Brooksby Church. We wish them both a long and happy retirement in Wymondham. Malcolm Britton

The future airspace programme is a significant project and will be running for some time. If you would like to stay up-to-date with

Did you Know?

A new breed of mosquito was found in the Tube tunnels in 1998. Scientists believed it mutated from the bird-biting form that colonized the London Underground when it was built in last century and, as it would not mate with its aboveground cousin, it has evolved into a separate species.

Britain is the only country in the world which doesn’t have its name on its postage stamps.

Vida’s October gardening tips So here it is, the colder windy weather which completely changes our gardens. That wonderful task of clearing leaves which seems to go on forever is probably the most time consuming job for this time of the year but it is so important.

If you leave the leaves on the lawn they rot down and kill the grass underneath them and spoil your lawn. If you leave them under the shrubs they are a hiding place for bugs such as capsid bugs and leaf cutters which will cause havoc when they emerge in the spring so I’m afraid to say it’s a task we cannot ignore! Get those rakes out and just think how good it is for your fitness. Leaf blowers are a great help but don’t forget that it is classed as fly tipping if you blow your leaves out onto the path or the road.

Last minute bulb planting is always good if you find some reduced bulbs. They will still come up in the spring provided you have planted them at the right depth so don’t try and plant them if the ground is hard and you can’t get the depth you need.

If you have a vegetable plot or an allotment then this is a good time to start clearing it of

weeds and spent vegetable plants so it can rest before you put on the manure or your preferred top dressing to feed the ground for next year’s planting. Happy Gardening. Vida Gregory

Butterflies in our gardenWe wrote an article for the March 2019 Magazine about you helping wildlife by planting flowers to extend the flowering season in your gardens so that you would be helping the survival of butterflies and moths plus numerous other insects. So this spring we waited patiently to see if the wildflower seedswe’d sown in the autumn of 2018 would produce our mini meadow and we put more variety of Red Admiral flowering plants into our borders to hopefully create a more inviting wildlife haven. We have not been disappointed, as our garden has produced records of grass snake, smooth newts, toads, field mice, hedgehogs and, of course, numerous birds. However, the real difference has been the number of species of butterfly we have seen. We have managed to carry out three separate 15 minute survey counts for The Butterfly ConservationOrganisation and have submitted our records.

Gatekeeper

The table below shows what we observed:-Butterfly species July 22nd August 3rd August 8th

Large White 5 2 4Small White 1 0 0Gatekeeper 4 4 2Small Tortoiseshell 1 2 5Red Admiral 1 1 2Peacock 5 7 2Holly Blue 1 0 0Painted Lady 0 1 1Speckled Wood 0 1 0Brimstone 0 0 1Comma 0 0 1Meadow Brown 0 0 1Total Butterflies 18 18 19Total Species 7 7 9

This was definitely an improvement on previous years and we were really excited to see some different species in the garden.

This was definitely an improvement on previous years and we were really excited to see some different species in the garden. The Painted Lady butterflies have been reported flying in large clouds off the eastern coast of Britain. So it was particularly exciting for us to have a first record for our garden of a Painted Lady this year. The Painted Lady is a migratory butterfly that arrives from continental Europe and Africa each summer to UK shores in varying numbers. It was also interesting to get a photograph from a friend asking about a particular caterpillar that he had seen on thistles in his area.

Painted Lady

It was a painted lady caterpillar so it has bred close by,another exciting find. Interestingly it was munching away on thistles, something lots of people cutdown as soon as they see them but if you could just live with them you may be lucky enough to see the caterpillar pupate and emerge as one of these beautiful butterflies!! The whole life cycle is only about 35 days from egg laying to the butterfly emerging and starting the cycle all over again. One of the most interesting painted lady butterfly facts is that it can reach a speed of nearly 30 miles per hour, allowing it to travel up to 100 miles per day during its migration.

Speckled Wood

Gathering information on our butterflies is needed to maintain their numbers and variety of species. We are working on having more wildflower verges around the parish to do our bit to provide havens for butteflies to feed, lay eggs and enable the caterpillars to reach the cocoon stage without the verges being cut and habitat lost. The food plants of the old verges and meadows are fast diasppearing and many scientists and conservation bodies are realising the crisis situation many of these species are facing. Wouldn’t it be great if we could in some small way help these beautiful creatures in our parish gardens and verges.

Please think about including a nectar rich flower patch in a small area of your garden for wildflowers of different species for next year if you didn’t manage it this year. Also, if you can please spare a little time to record what you see whether butterflies, moths, bats, hedgehogs, newts and birds, it can really be valuable as it is these records that are so important as evidence for the state of our wildlife. You might have seen

these on walks or in your gardens. Every sighting is valuable. Send your records to Nature Spot - www.naturespot.org.uk – the Leicestershire and Rutland wildlife records website.

10 Things You May Not Know about Hoby and District WI Did you know that our WI started in 1924? This year we are celebrating our 95th Anniversary. Our meetings are usually open to everyone, but for this special occasion, in November, it will be a ‘members’ only’ evening where we will be celebrating in style! There are only five years to go to our 100th anniversary. We are determined to reach that milestone. Why not join us so that you too can celebrate our next big anniversary? Read on to see the possibilities that the WI offers.

Did you know that the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation WI organises a skittles league? Our WI has a skittles team that plays in this League. Last year we reached the semi finals having won all of our group matches.

Did you know that over the past few years we have tried a number of diverse activities at our monthly meetings? African Drumming, Belly Dancing, Pilates, Jewellery Making and Wine Tasting have all been tried. We’ve also had talks on a range of subjects such as tea tasting, the Ethiopian Tribes of the Omo Valley, Rescue Dogs and Antarctica. All of our meetings end with a social time and a supper provided by members. At our group meetings with the other Wreake Valley WIs we’ve entered and won competitions, been entertained with music by the Melton Ukulele Band and heard a talk about chocolate with tasting too plus much more.

Did you know that every year we have an outing instead of a meeting in the village hall? This year on a glorious evening in July our WI members visited Spring Barrow Lodge Farm near Whitwick to see the longhorn cattle herd. It was a chance to see a beautiful part of Leicestershire, wander in a gorgeous garden, be shown some wonderful 19th century artworks and then ride on a trailer to have a very close encounter with the fantastic longhorn cattle. After this most interesting and informative visit we rounded off the evening with supper in a nearby pub.

Did you know that we also arrange extra trips to the theatre or to try out a new activity? This year Malcolm Britton invited our WI members to Belvoir Vale Bowls Club in Hose, for an open afternoon taster session. On a lovely August afternoon seven of us arrived at the club not really sure if it would be something we would really enjoy. How wrong we were! We had a wonderful afternoon learning the rules of the game, trying to gauge accurately distances and speed and having plenty of exercise

16 17

too. We certainly added to our ten thousand steps a day target! We received wonderful hospitality from the club members who willing gave up their time to teach us. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and just shows that you should try every opportunity that you can.

Did you know that our WI supports the local and wider community in several ways? Every March our WI hosts a local Contact Group for afternoon tea, which gives us a chance to hone our baking skills and to entertain older people who live alone. Each year we support a charity, often local, by raising money by carol singing. We always support St Mary’s Church in Melton Mowbray by decorating a tree for their Christmas Tree Festival, which gives members a chance to get together and use their crafting skills. Last year we supported the Hoby Christmas tree mini festival and will do so in the future if asked. We also provide the teas once every four years for the Horticultural Society Show in Hoby. On an international level our WI contributes money to the ACWW (acww.org.uk) campaign that supports women around the world in trying to achieve sustainable living conditions, equality and to combat hunger.

Did you know that the WI has its own college? Denman is the WI’s centre for learning, offering a wealth of opportunities to learn new skills on day schools and residential courses in the field of cookery, craft and lifestyle. All residential courses include accommodation in an en-suite, uniquely decorated room, all meals and refreshments breaks, and hours of tutor-lead workshops. There is an opportunity to win a bursary from our WI to help with the cost. Two of our members have recently won bursaries each worth £300 and have attended a course on making Artisan breads. They reported that the rooms were spacious and the food was fantastic.

Did you know that the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation of Women’s Institutes run many courses and visits open to anyone who is a WI member?

Did you know that the WI runs local and national conferences? These feature debates on world issues and national campaigns. Members from our WI are able to attend as delegates and to vote on these issues and campaigns. The national conferences have talks given by high profile speakers such as well- known celebrities and politicians.

Did you know that new members are always welcome? Come along and help us to reach our 100th anniversary milestone.

Hoby with Rotherby Parish Council.

Letter recently sent to the Parish Council which we share with the residents of Hoby, Rotherby, Brooksby and Ragdale.

NEW DEVELOPMENT AT GREAT LANE, FRISBY ON THE WREAKE

I am writing to you on behalf of Melton Borough Council, in respect of new, affordable rented homes that are soon to be made available through the Council's Housing Register, to eligible local people.

These new homes are part of the new development at Great Lane, Frisby on the Wreake. The first of the affordable housing element is due to complete in November this year, and the homes will be made available through emh Homes. In November 2014, Midlands Rural Housing carried out a Housing Needs Survey in the Parish of Frisby on the Wreake to establish the level of housing need. We have made contact with the residents who completed the survey, to make them aware that these homes will soon be available, and to ensure they are now registered on the housing register (as long as they still live at the same address and in housing need of course).

Your Parish (Hoby with Rotherby) is included in Melton Borough Council's 'Cascade Agreement' for the allocation of these new homes. It would therefore be great if the Parish Council could encourage anyone they know of who has a need for affordable housing, to register on Melton Borough Council's housing register, in advance of the properties being built. This will help ensure that as many people as possible with a local connection to the Parish and surrounding Parishes are nominated to the new homes.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any queries, please do feel free to get in touch. T: 0300 1234 009 I M: 07768 708359 I E: [email protected] mailto:[email protected] www.midlandsrural.org.uk www.midlandsrural.org.uk I@MidlandsRural http://twitter.com/MidlandsRural

Famous faces of Leicestershire Maynard was born in Farnham, Surrey, and attended Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar School in Leicestershire. He began as a variety performer, taking his professional surname from a billboard for Maynard's Wine Gums, a popular British confectionery.

Years later he recounted that the BBC had asked him to change his surname so said to himself "That'll do". Maynard's first television broadcast was on 12 September 1953 on Henry Hall’s Face the Music. He was placed fourth in the British heat of the 1957 Eurovision Song Contest. With Terry Scott, he appeared at Butlins Holiday Camp in Skegness and partnered him in the TV series Great Scott, It's Maynard!.

He was part of the team that presented the One O'Clock Show for Tyne Tees Television in Newcastle (1959–64). He appeared in Dennis Potter's television play Paper Roses (1971), about the last day in the life of a reporter, and another notable straight acting role followed when he appeared in Colin Welland's television play, Kisses at Fifty (1973). Around the same time, Maynard worked with television actor and comedian Ronnie Barker in the (original) "Football Blues" which aired as "Spanners Eleven" (also 1973) and was part of a series called Seven of One.

After a pilot episode in 1974, he starred in the Yorkshire Television sitcom Oh No, It's Selwyn Froggitt! (1976–78) in which he played the eponymous lead role. The programme ran for four series, the last, in 1978, as Selwyn. Later, for the same ITV contractor, he played Fred Moffatt in The Gaffer (1981–83). His record called "Stock Car Racing is Magic!" was released in 1979, which is still played at stock car meetings, made use of Froggitt's "magic" catchphrase.

A member of the Carry On Team, Maynard appeared in five of the Carry On films, including Carry On Matron (1972) and Carry On Dick (1974). He had a film role as Yorkshire farmer Hinchcliffe in It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet (1976).

He was the subject of This Is Your Life in 1974 when he was surprised by Eamonn Andrews. Maynard published his autobiography The Yo-Yo Man in November 1975 (published by Leicester's Golden Eagle books) and Stand Up...And Be Counted in 1997 (Breedon Books). In April 1992, he returned to Yorkshire Television, and began playing the lovable old rogue Claude Jeremiah Greengrass, in the popular and long-running television series Heartbeat, remaining in the show until December 2000, and its spin off

series The Royal until 2003.

Having originally retired from acting in 2000 following a series of strokes, he made a comeback to radio presenting in March 2003, for BBC Radio Leicester, where he had last worked in 1968. His show, called Bill of Fare, aired every Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm for nearly five years, until he was dismissed without notice on 5 February 2008.

In October 2009, he made a return to the stage when he appeared as the main guest of honour at the Pride of Bridlington Awards held in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

In March 1984, Maynard stood against Tony Benn in the by election at Chesterfield as an Independent Labour candidate. It was his sole foray into politics and was intended to prevent Benn returning to Parliament. Benn retained the seat; Maynard took fourth place.

His final television appearance aired on 14 April 2018. Maynard appeared on Pointless Celebrities along with Tricia Penrose.

Maynard lived in Leicestershire during the latter part of his life.

He married Muriel Linnett on 5 November 1949, and they had two children. She died in June 1983. Maynard was a vegetarian. His son is musician Martin Maynard Williams.

On 4 September 1989, Maynard married Tonia Bern, widow of Donald Campbell, at Hinckley Registry Office. They divorced in 1998.

In later life, Maynard was mobility impaired, usually using a mobility scooter or wheelchair, having suffered from multiple strokes. He died in hospital on 30 March 2018, not long after falling and breaking his hip.

Did you Know? The sport of football, or soccer, supposedly got its start in England when Anglo-Saxon farm workers ploughing a field unearthed the skull of a Danish warrior killed in battle a few years earlier. To show their still bitter feelings towards the Danes and to amuse themselves, they began kicking the skull among them. This early form of football was called “kicking the Dane’s head.”

As far back as the Anglo-Saxons, the English brewed and drank beer in great quantities.

A favorite drink was mead, ale mixed with honey. A record of taxes on beer in the late 1600s indicates the average Englishman drank three quarts per week.

Both churches, worked together to support the annual Ride + Stride event co-ordinated by the Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust and we thank John Coleman, Marta Hoffman and Daniel Christmas who were cycling and

visiting other open Parish Churches and raising funds for Hoby Parish Church and the Trust. The Trust has also given a grant this year of £4,000 to support the Toilet and Servery Project for the Parish Church. We were also this year a hospitality centre for the Open Hands Charity Tour de Leicester who were cycling to raise funds for this Leicester based charity. On the day over 200 Tour de Leicester cyclists called in to Hoby Methodist Centre for the toilet facilities and came on to the Parish Church for refreshments. They were supplied with water, bananas and energy drinks and many of them enjoyed

cups of tea and coffee and many biscuits and chocolate Our volunteers and helpers managed extremely well with the high volume of people passing through and we are very grateful to them for coping so well with the rush which lasted for a three hour period. The afternoon concluded at 6pm, Both churches are pleased to have been able to support this event and helped this Leicester Charity to raise funds to support worthy projects in the City.

Hoby and District Horticultural Show

What a lovely show we had this year and the atmosphere in the hall was wonderful with both young and old helping each other. The young with the strength to carry the entries and the old to advice how best to display them with the years of showing knowledge. The teas were a great success thanks to Lyn and Catherine’s wonderful

service and all the ladies who baked us so many wonderful cakes, THANK YOU.

There was over 400 entries so a massive thank you to you to every one of you. After all, there would be no show without your entries.

This year we celebrated 50 years of Jean Morris being an officer for the society and presented her with some flowers and chocolates from the Society.

Mike Tilling was presented with a VERY special bottle of wine as this was his last show as chairman. After 37 years he has decided to retire and will officially stand down at our 2020 AGM when our new chairman Ashley Newson will take on the roll. We are all grateful for the years he has given to our Society.

We hope to see you all at our 2020 show. Vida Gregory and the team

Good News for Hoby Church

Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, work will already have started on our servery and toilet project. More funds have been sourced by Vic Allsop to cover some of the anticipated extra building costs and the church has already been prepared for the builders. #

The first task will be the removal of the monuments (shown in the photograph), which will be relocated to the north aisle wall.

The disruption inside the church may mean that access will be restricted at times and this will be made clear at the church door. Please note that church cleaning has been suspended for the duration of the works.

The DCC extends grateful thanks to all of you who have worked so hard over many years in order to make this project come to fruition.

A Poem for Lisa Wright Came to Hoby 1993

Family then numbered two not three.

To Convent School in Loughborough she went, Practicing Catholic. So family were sent.

Worked at Leicester Royal, Intensive Care. Mother on hand to cope with home wear and tear.

Soon lovely Wright family numbered five, Happy and supportive, everyone to survive.

So many helped, especially Doris and Jean, Meals, nursing advise and sent helpers to clean.

Pub should be grateful for so much care They will miss Lisa as do many who are here.

Many interests racing, hunting tennis and sport, Always enjoyed and given some thought.

Family encouraged to work hard and succeed, They have all done well and followed the creed.

We shall miss the welcome next to the Hall, We are so grateful and send love to you all.

Written by read by Leslie Case at Picnic at Bullock Island

Friends of Frisby Church welcome 'The Generation Gap' (Melton U3A Guitar Group) As our band is one of the local U3A Branch activity groups, all the members are retired. We perform at charity venues, typically local Care Homes, Church events, fetes and similar. The band composition: one lead guitarist, two bass guitarists, three backing vocalists, one percussionist and six acoustic rhythm guitarists - also contributing to the vocals. While this does mean that some venues are a little packed, it allows members the freedom to miss out on some venues (ie for the odd holiday, U3A group events and family responsibilities). We generally limit our performance venues to about one per month. Any donations received are passed to our chosen Charity: The Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance. So far this year's performances have been at Egerton Lodge, Mencap Centre, Mowbray Court , Age UK - Gloucester House, Amwell Care Home, Sysonby Knoll Hotel, Egerton Lodge and forthcoming: Holwell Bowls Club, Frisby Church and Gloucester House. We have already been booked for venues in February & April 2020. If you want to know more about the 'Generation Gap' band contact Pete Matthews: '[email protected]'

Frisby on the Wreake Flower & Garden Club

The next meeting of the Club will be on

Tuesday 15th October 2019 7pm for 7.30pm start

Frisby Village Hall. Nic Bywater will demonstrate

“More Little Surprises”

Ian and Dominic have been performing together for a number of years playing melodic improvisations on jazz standards and original compositions. Their style of jazz concentrates on developing melodic ideas within the framework of the melody of a tune, whilst maintaining the concept and groove behind it. The result is a very accessible melodic style which allows them to explore, improvise and develop ideas without losing the essence of each piece of music, and to interact together in as creative a way as possible.

They have had enormous success over many years during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with their very successful show “Jazz at Lunchtime”. Thousands of people have come to see them perform, with many sell-out shows. A number of visitors to the Edinburgh Fringe from all over the world have returned year after year.

Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, the duo has regularly and extensively toured throughout the UK. They have embarked on many rural tours under their “Jazz in the Village” series, playing in hundreds of halls, often bringing jazz for the first time to remote communities, performing in intimate settings to appreciative audiences. The beautiful Scottish scenery that they have seen on their travels has inspired the writing of many pieces of music by Ian.

Ian and Dom have also performed in a number of festivals including: Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Glasgow Jazz Festival, Fife Jazz Festival, Callander Jazz Festival, Borders Jazz Festival, Bath Fringe Festival, Buxton Fringe Festival

“...he really used the vast range of the tenor, always with gentle lyricism” “...really excellent Millar originals...”

"Beautiful soaring magic! I was blown away by your show, just breath-taking!” "What a lovely and exhilarating performance! Enjoyed the interaction between the two

of you, and the obvious love you have for what you do.” "Ian Millar’s own composition Morning Dew opened the performance, its lovely

sinuous melody ranging freely from the heights to the depths of the tenor sax voice.”

CHORAL SOCIETY JOINS FORCES WITH COLLEGE TO PERFORM ‘ETERNAL LIGHT’

On Saturday October 26, Melton residents have a unique opportunity to experience the first performance in Melton Mowbray of Howard Goodall’s modern requiem. This will be performed in the wonderful surroundings of St Mary’s church by Melton Choral Society in collaboration with the Dance Department of Brooksby Melton College. The students will perform the ballet as the choir sings, joined by soloists: Caroline Sharpe (soprano), Jack Hunter (tenor) and Robert Edwards (baritone).

Howard Goodall may be familiar to some as the composer of the theme music to ‘The Vicar of Dibley’. The requiem was commissioned by London Musici to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a choral-orchestral-dance piece. It was first performed on 11 November 2008 by the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and the Rambert Dance Company. The music combines Latin Sacred Requiem text with English poetry.

Tickets for this event may be purchased from the Choral society’s website: https://www.meltonmowbraychoralsociety.co.uk , The Samworth Centre, choir members or at the door on the night.

(Frisby choir members are Margaret Cooper and Jen Howes)

“A Short History of the Leicester Royal Infirmary” by Karl Mayes and Jon Currington Hoby & District Village Hall (LE14 3DT),

Wednesday 20th November, 7.30pm Since it’s opening in 1771, Leicester’s Infirmary has grown from a small institution (known locally as “the House”) with a handful of staff to one of the largest hospital Trusts in England. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust now employs over

15,000 staff and treats over a million patients a year. The history of the Leicester Infirmary is essentially a story of evolution, growth andadaptation. This talk will cover key points in the development of the hospital and introduce you to some of the individuals who have stamped their mark on the institution. The Trust has also recently established a dedicated committee to oversee and promote interest in its art, historical artefacts and archive material. We look forward to sharing with you some of the recent work and aspirations of this committee.

Karl Mayes is Patient & Public Involvement Manager and Jon Currington is Head of Partnerships and Business Development.

Karl and Jon sit on the Arts and Heritage Committee for University Hospitals of Leicester and are keen to bring the rich history and arts legacy of our hospitals to a wider audience.

All are welcome; the price for non members is £2.00 (pay on door).

Did you Know? The Ghost Research Foundation has determined that with 500 recorded cases of ghostly encounters, York is the most haunted city in England and one of the most haunted in the world.

There is a British legend that says there must be 6 ravens in residence at all times at the Tower of London, or else the British Monarchy and Tower will fall.

The most celebrated residents of the Tower of London today are the ravens. There must be six ravens in residence at any one time by a Royal Decree put in place by Charles II. According to an old legend, if the birds should leave, the British Monarchy and the White Tower will crumble and fall. To be on the safe side, the Tower usually keeps eight birds at all times.

Kate Middleton is an eighth cousin seven times removed to the first U.S. President George Washington and a thirteenth cousin once removed from American World War II hero General George Patton.

More languages (300) are spoken in London than in any other country in the world. The Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square is presented every year by the people of Oslo in gratitude for London’s assistance during World War II.

The London subway, or the “Tube,” is one of the oldest in the world. The 409 escalators in the Tube cover a distance every week which is approximately equivalent to several trips around the globe.

Creamy Pumpkin Soup

Prep: 20 minutes Cook: 25 minutes

Ingredients 2 Tbsp Olive Oil 2 Onions finely chopped, 1kg pumpkin or squash (try kabocha), peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks 700ml vegetable stock or chicken stock 150ml of double cream For the croutons 2 Tbsp Olive Oil 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread, crusts removed A handful of pumpkin seeds

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently cook 2 finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add 1kg pumpkin or squash, cut into chunks, to the pan, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden. Pour 700ml vegetable or chicken stock into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, and then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft. Pour 150ml double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. For an extra-velvety consistency you can pour the soup through a fine sieve. The soup can now be frozen for up to 2 months. To make the croutons: cut 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread into small squares. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the bread until it starts to become crisp. Add a handful of pumpkin seeds to the pan, and then cook for a few mins more until they are toasted. These can be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container. Reheat the soup if needed, taste for seasoning, then serve scattered with croutons and seeds and drizzled with more olive oil, if you want.
