Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph

Next Week: Epiphany of the Lord1st Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6

2nd Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12

First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14All that we say and do should bring honor and glory to God. This reading expands on that; honor and respect must be shown toward our parents. Failure to do so is offensive to God.

Gospel: Luke 2:22-40This passage tells of the Presentation of the Lord. The purification process that is mentioned is the ritual purifi-cation of a woman who has given birth. She is considered “unclean” after childbirth and cannot enter the temple or touch anything sacred. The purification process included a burnt offering and the mikveh, a ritual immersion, in order to achieve ritual purification.

Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21In this reading, St. Paul tells us how we should treat oth-ers, with “… heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another…” Is there any better way to imi-tate Jesus?

Parish Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both

the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

As we celebrate Christmas, the season will undoubtedly evoke many memories of Christmases past and recall the loved ones who made our celebrations very special. My most enduring memory of Christmas was decorating the house. Central to this end, was the placing of the Nativity scene on the credenza. My grandmother always placed the figures in just the “right spot”, placing them as though she “knew” exactly how it all took place. And, of course, she would never allow the infant Jesus to be placed until Christmas Eve. The “fuss” bespoke of her deep devotion to the Holy Family and her own not so holy family. Even now, our family Nativity scene is set up as she did it and hopefully with at least half the devotion that my grandmother had for it.

The popularity of the Nativity scene, one of the most beloved and enduring symbols of the holiday season, originated in Italy and is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. St. Bonaventure (d. 1274) in his Life of St. Francis of Assisi tells the story the best:

It happened in the third year before his death, that in order to excite the inhabitants of Grecio to com-memorate the nativity of the Infant Jesus with great devotion, [St. Francis] determined to keep it with all possible solemnity; and lest he should be accused of lightness or novelty, he asked and obtained the permission of the sovereign Pontiff. Then he prepared a manger, and brought hay, and an ox and an ass to the place appointed. The brethren were summoned, the people ran together, the forest re-sounded with their voices, and that venerable night was made glorious by many and brilliant lights and sonorous psalms of praise.

The man of God [St. Francis] stood before the manger, full of devotion and piety, bathed in tears and radiant with joy; the Holy Gospel was chanted by Francis, the Levite of Christ. Then he preached to the people around the nativity of the poor King; and being unable to utter His name for the tenderness of His love, He called Him the Babe of Bethlehem.

Like St. Francis, perhaps you have your particular traditions, whether it be a nativity scene, or a special recipe. What-ever they be, may it bespeak of our faith and devotion to the Gospel. The Holy Family, though mired in many chal-lenges and trials, remained faithful to God’s Word. As you peer into your own nativity scene and live out your tradi-tions of Christmas, may you recognize that all our trials find their resolution in the simplicity of the Birth of the Babe of Bethlehem.

Schedule

The Solemnity ofMary, Mother of GodMonday, January 1

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, is not a Holy Day of Obligation in 2018 because it falls on a Monday. Our regular schedule of Masses will be in effect: 7:30 AM at Assumption, 8:30 AM and 12:00 Noon at Immaculate Concep-tion. However, there will not be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on January 1st.

“Joseph renounced paternity of the flesh, and yet found it in the spirit, as the foster father of Our Lord. Mary renounced maternity, and yet found it in her virginity, as the closed garden through which no one should pass except the Light of the World Who would break nothing in His coming – any more than light breaks the window by coming into the room.”

Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen(The World’s First Love)

Exposition Schedule - January 8There will be no Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday, January 8 due to a conflict with the Confirma-tion Retreat. The Sanctuary Candle Burns at

awe upon those who encountered him. “They were aston-ished at his teaching” (Mk 1:22); “they were all amazed” (Mk 1:27); “they were utterly astounded” (Mk 6:51); “the disciples were amazed at his words” (Mk 10:24), etc.

Mark stresses Jesus as “Teacher” and as the “Servant of God”. Jesus is regularly addressed as “Teacher” by his disciples (Mk 4:38) and by those who seek his help (Mk 5:35). He also uses the Hebrew form of teacher, “Rabbi” (Mk 9:5). Ironically, Mark gives little of Jesus’ teaching compared with Luke and Matthew. Mark mainly stresses what Jesus did. He depicts Jesus’ ceaseless activity and his power over sickness, disease, death, and the work of evil spirits.

Mark also displays both Jesus’ divinity and his humanity. For example, Mark tells us that Jesus is “the carpenter” (Mk 6:3). Matthew softens it a bit by saying that Jesus is the “carpenter’s son” (Matt. 13:55). Mark even tells us about Jesus’ emotions. Jesus was moved with “compassion” (Mk 6:34); he “sighed” (Mk 7:34; 8:12); he “marveled” at the unbelief of his own townsfolk (Mk 6:6); he “looked” upon the rich young man and “loved him” (Mk 10:21). Mark also adds vivid details that the other gospel writers leave out. For example, he describes Jesus’ tenderness as he took the little children “in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them” (Mk 10:16). On another occasion Mark describes Jesus “asleep on a cushion” in the stern of the boat as the apostles feared for their lives when caught in the storm at sea (Mk 4:38).

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.

122. Why is Year B of the bible readings at Mass called the Year of Mark’s Gospel?

The liturgical year begins with the First Sunday of Advent, which starts four Sundays before Christmas (December 25). In this Liturgical year Cycle B, the Church meditates on the Gospel of Mark and uses it for most Sunday read-ings (St. Matthew for Cycle A and St. Luke for Cycle C). St. John, who appears several times in the Liturgy of the Word of all three years, is offered in a special way during the time of the Lord’s Passion.

Among the four gospels, Mark’s account is unique in many ways. It is the shortest account and seems to be the earliest. Both Luke and Matthew use much of Mark’s text. Luke’s account contains over half of the verses in Mark’s account (some 350 verses out of a total 660 verses in Mark). Unlike Luke and Matthew who begin their ac-counts with the events surrounding the birth of the Mes-siah, Mark begins his account with Jesus’ public ministry and the mission of John the Baptist. Mark leaves no doubt as to whom Jesus was. In the very first sentence of his account, he proclaims that Jesus is the “Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). Jesus was not simply a man among men, but one who caused great wonder, amazement, and

If You Have Not Participated in the Renew + Rebuild Campaign

• We are looking for full participation from every family that is part of our parish. No gift is too small.

• At this point in the Campaign, 100% of all Dollars stay with Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady Parish because we have gone beyond the amount that requires 26% go down to the Archdiocese of New York.

• There are still Naming Opportunities for some of the items that are part of the Campaign. Please see the list below.

• We will most certainly complete all of the projects identified in the campaign; but by exceeding our goals, we can tackle some new projects as well as be ready for the inevitable emergencies that arise in a Par-ish of this age. We already had compromised very old pipes in the Lower Church that connect our heat to radiators – an unexpected cost. Thank God for the Gold Envelopes!
