threatened funding leaves nine projects in limboREGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

� e future of projects across Melton and Moorabool valued at more than $8 million is under threat, with the Abbott government refusing to guarantee funding allocated by the previous Labor regime .

Melton council chief executive Kelvin Tori and Moorabool CEO Rob Croxford are still waiting for con� rmation on whether nine projects selected by the councils will go ahead, a� er Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss con� rmed Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF) allocations made by the previous government would be reassessed.

“� e government will continue to deliver funding to RDAF projects that are under contract,” Mr Truss said.

“However, non-contracted announcements made by the Labor government have the status of election promises and do not bind an alternative government.”

Projects at risk include the $200,000 relocation of Combined Churches Caring

Melton’s food bank, which specialises in emergency services.

� e food bank needs to relocate to a permanent site due

to the redevelopment of its current council-owned building.

Combined Churches chief executive Denise Morris told a council meeting the organisation needed � nancial support to be able to move. “We need to ensure this program keeps going,’’ she said. ‘We started for the right reasons – there was a need for it,

there was a service gap; we met that gap.”A further $739,118 of RDAF money was

allocated for the construction of regional tennis courts at Caroline Springs .

‘‘At best, these projects will be delayed and at worst they will be at risk,” Mr Tori said.

Seven projects in Moorabool were funded under the RDAF, including the long-awaited Bacchus Marsh Indoor Aquatic Centre .

Other projects included upgrades at Maddingley Park, Gordon Tennis Club and Ballan Recreation Reserve.

“[Moorabool] council is waiting for Mr Truss to announce the results of his review of the applications in order to determine if the projects will have the necessary funding to proceed,” Mr Croxford said.

Gorton Labor MP Brendan O’Connor accused the government of treating the outer-west with contempt. “ When we were in government, we delivered a record level of funding for local community projects, parks and libraries in Melton, including the $20 million Melton Library and Learning Hub. I call on the Liberal government to immediately commit to funding these important community projects.” \

corella boom continuesMoorabool council will continue using a scare cannon to disperse corellas from Maddingley Park and surrounds. The Weekly reported in August that corellas were causing extensive damage to council and privately-owned property in Bacchus Marsh. Council chief executive Rob Croxford said the scare cannon was initially used for a two-week period. “We noticed after about four days that corellas started to reappear in the area, so we re-engaged the contractor to resume the daily use of the scare cannon for a further two weeks,” he said. “Council has decided the best course of action is to use the scare cannon as needed over the next three months .’’ \

More than 25,000 people braved the cold weather to enjoy Saturday’s Djerriwarrh Festival .

A street parade, the Melton Lions Club carnival and a � reworks display were among the highlights of the 34th annual event.

Melton council’s customer engagement manager, Dan Hogan, said while attendance was down on previous years, the event was still a success.

“We were really lucky with the weather as it

could have been a lot worse,” he said. “� ere were imminent showers and it was a bit cold, which kept some people away, but there were

still over 25,000 people there.“It didn’t stop thousands of people

lining the oval to see the � reworks.’’Mr Hogan said relocation of the

community ring show, previously staged under a tent, into an open area was well received.“It had a real circus atmosphere

and there were great performances from schools and community groups.”

Mr Hogan said live shows from major

acts Stone� eld and Pseudo Echo, as well as performances by local talent, ensured all music tastes were catered for.

He said organisers had been keen to retain the festival’s traditional street parade, which this year had about 50 � oats. � e parade winners included Melton South Primary School, Mambourin Enterprises and Melton Combined Christian Churches.

� e parents of a teenager who died in a crash on Gisborne-Melton Road say upgrades are overdue.

As reported by the Weekly, the state government has announced $3 million to improve a 15-kilometre stretch between Hobbs Road in Toolern Vale and Melton Highway.

VicRoads said works, including installing wire-rope barriers and road widening, were likely to begin midway through next year.

Tracy and Alan Johnson said that while the money was welcome, they believed the much-needed upgrades could have saved the life of Tracy’s son, Ryan Waldie, had they occurred earlier.

Mr Waldie, 19, died on April 5 this year a� er a crash involving two cars and a truck.

“� e report by police investigators found that a contributing factor to the accident was the state of the road,” Mr Johnson said.

“It said the road is not up to state standards and isn’t wide enough.’’

Since the crash, Mr and Mrs Johnson have

been urging VicRoads to � x the road, which was the scene of 25 crashes in the � ve years to June this year, including three fatalities and 10 ‘‘run-o� ’’ crashes.

Mrs Johnson said there were many instances in Melton of temporary solutions instead of roads being � xed properly.

Regional director Patricia Liew said VicRoads had been aware of the crash history

along this section, which was why the project was developed and funded.

‘‘As part of the works, approximately 550 metres of Gisborne-Melton Road will be widened to help prevent

run-o� -road crashes. ’’ Mr and Mrs Johnson said they

were disappointed with comments made by local police, who said it was unlikely anything could have prevented the fatalities on Gisborne-Melton Road because they were head-on collisions.

“An expert with three pages of quali� cations and expertise stated if the road was maintained properly this crash was avoidable and my son would still be alive,’’ Mrs Johnson said. \ TM

alarm bells as north-west road funding falls by 27%transport

VicRoads funding for roads in Melbourne’s north-west has been cut by more than $40 million, according to � gures released by the state opposition last week.

� e � gures, based on VicRoads documents, show that across the state $160 million less was allocated in VicRoads’ 2012-13 funding than in 2011-12.

In the metro north-west region, which includes Melton, funding dropped by 27 per cent – from $149 million in 2011-12 to $108 million in 2012-13.

� e region, which covers 14 municipalities, includes four growth area councils : Hume, Whittlesea, Melton and Wyndham.

As reported by the Weekly , growth area councils have been calling for more funding to be spent on roads in outer Melbourne.

In August, Auditor-General John Doyle criticised successive state governments and VicRoads for failing to provide adequate funding for transport and roads in growth areas.

Opposition leader Daniel Andrews said these funding cuts were responsible for roads falling into disrepair, creating a safety hazard for motorists.

‘‘It’s pretty simple: if you take money out of road maintenance and don’t build new roads, the quality of roads in Victoria will su� er and so will motorists.’’

Melton Labor MP Don Nardella said the $40 million cut from the north-west region could be well spent in Melton.

“� ey could build a bridge over Kororoit Creek to safeguard families from more

deaths on the Melton Highway.“� e lights at Ferris Road still

haven’t done. � ey are saying it will start next year, but there’s still been lots of accidents there and needs

action now.’’He said work was also needed on

the Western Freeway, highlighting a deep bump in the road between Ferris and Coburns roads heading to Melbourne.

VicRoads metro north-west regional director Patricia Liew said the utility couldn’t

comment on the � gures as it was unclear how they had been calculated.

“In 2013-14, we are spending $466 million on road maintenance ,” she said. “� e targeted road repair and restoration program will ensure the life of these roads is extended for decades .

“In addition to maintenance funding, the Victorian government has provided $630 million for spending on a number of vital new road projects.’’

� e state opposition has set up a website, FixOurRoads.com.au to allow residents to nominate dangerous roads that need � xing.

Roads Minister Terry Mulder did not respond to requests to comment. \

Families of residents at Reg Geary House are being encouraged to attend a meeting about the announced closure of the aged-care facility.

Labor MPs Don Nardella and Brendan O’Connor have organised a meeting this Saturday in response to inquiries from worried families.

As reported by the Weekly, the closure of the Western Health-operated centre was announced on October 25, with the organisation stating it no longer met the needs of its 30 occupants.

Melton and Moorabool landholders are being warned the region’s main water supplies could be turned o� in the event of a major � re this summer.

Bacchus Marsh CFA captain Nathan Ractli� e said it was important, this � re season, for residents to think about what they would do if mains water was cut o� . � ey should consider alternatives , such as a water tank that doesn’t run on electricity or a nearby swimming pool, Mr Ractli� e said.

“ We want residents to be aware and be self-reliant,’’ he said. “If they aren’t prepared, they should leave early if there’s a � re.”

Western Water managing director Neil Brennan said residents in high-risk areas should consider possible alternatives.

“If electricity is cut or our infrastructure is a� ected by � re, our pumps may fail, cutting the mains water supply,” he said. “If we have extremely high demand for water from customers and the CFA during a � re, water pressure may also drop.”

Mr Brennan advised residents to consult their local CFA unit about options for independent water supplies.

“We are also doing all we can to prepare for summer, with back-up generators ready and water storage tanks at high capacity to cope

if we have a � re.” Mr Brennan said Western Water was encouraging residents to identify � re hydrants that may be di� cult to access because of damage or vegetation and debris, so they can be upgraded and the area around

them cleared. “You can take a picture of a damaged or tired-looking hydrant and send it to us via Twitter or Facebook and we will follow up to ensure it is repainted or repaired.” \ TM

Western Metropolitan Liberal MPs Bernie Finn and Andrew Elsbury have ruled out contesting the newly formed seat of Sunbury at next year’s state election.

Speaking to the Weekly , both denied rumours they were looking to make the switch to the lower house.

Mr Finn, who lives in Bulla, said people had been asking him for months whether he would stand for the new seat, which is similar to the old seat of Tullamarine that he

represented as MP from 1992-1999. He lost to Labor’s Liz Beattie in 1999 and the seat was later abolished.

“If I’m elected again I will be delighted to represent Sunbury in the upper house,” Mr Finn said.

‘‘I used to live in Sunbury; my children go to school there and I do a lot of things there.

“But I will not be contesting the new [lower house] seat of Sunbury.”

� e seat, created in a recent redistribution, includes Diggers Rest.

Mr Elsbury, who lives in Werribee, said he had heard the rumours that he was

considering contesting the Sunbury seat. “At my electoral conference I

announced I would be running for Western Metropolitan region again.”

� e Weekly believes Mr Finn’s wife Cathy is considering standing

for the Liberal party. She stood as the Liberal candidate for the seat of Yuroke

in 2006. “If she is to run, she would be a � rst-class candidate,” Mr Finn said.

Sunbury resident Ben Collier, who withdrew as the Liberal candidate for the federal seat of McEwen for family reasons in April, said that he was considering his options.

Sunbury ALP branch president and former Hume young citizen of the year, Jamie Byron has con� rmed he will stand for Labor Party preselection.

“� e Labor party is , however, yet to open nominations for state seats and determine a preselection timetable,” he said. \

Localised ambulance response times won’t be released to the public, despite growing concerns over delays and shortages in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

Opposition health spokesman Wade Noonan said Labor’s freedom of information request for � gures for the � rst half of this year had been denied.

He said the release of localised response times was recommended by the state auditor-general in 2010.

“� e community should have access to the � gures to understand response times, as it [helps] to advocate for improvements,’’ Mr Noonan said. He said waiting times in the outer-west continued to grow and were contributing to deaths.

In Melton, there have been three deaths since October 2012 where patients have waited longer than 15 minutes for an ambulance. Lilliana Mizzi, 78, waited four hours for an ambulance a� er having a stroke . Brodie Wilson, 18, waited 27 minutes for paramedics to come from Sunbury a� er having an asthmatic attack. And Matthew Gibbs, 23, waited 16 minutes a� er having a cardiac arrest at a Melton recreation centre on

October 8. � e most recent localised � gures released, for July-December 2012, showed the average waiting time for life-threatening cases in Melton was 14.13 minutes.

Hillside’s average waiting time of 15.38 minutes was above the state benchmark of 15 minutes for ‘‘code one’’ cases.

Ambulance Victoria chief executive Greg Sassella said he didn’t think releasing localised � gures would help.

“I don’t think it’s [waiting times] a secret, as it’s in our annual report and

other releases. It [releasing � gures] creates an incorrect premise of how we operate.”

Ambulance Victoria group manager Tony Elliott said the service

was increasing resources in Melton.“In April this year, an extra night-shi�

ambulance and paramedics were added to Melton and extra peak-period ambulances and paramedics were also added to Caroline Springs, Werribee and Bacchus Marsh,’’ Mr Elliott said.

“Additional sta� and ambulance resources for periods of peak demand will also be added to Melton, Werribee and Sunbury by April next year.” \

MY SHOUTI tire of our politicians boasting about Melbourne topping global liveability surveys while � lling the joint with apartment blocks and freeways.

When I lived overseas in the 1990s, I boasted that Melbourne was the world’s biggest country town, with manageable traf� c, loads of parks and relaxed people going about their business . Those days are long gone, thanks to an obsession by successive Victorian governments to outdo Sydney in the growth stakes.

And while politicians welcomed growth, they did sod all to cater for it and ignored expert advice and public demand for better public transport.

Melbourne had the space to cater for growth. But now we’re seeing plans to squeeze out public space, from selling open areas near public housing to cutting a swathe through Royal Park for the east-west link.

We have strange priorities. \DAVID BONNICI \ EDITOR


“Some people don’t want others to know they grew up in the western suburbs,” Shane Jacobson says. “Some say it under their breath or quietly so people don’t hear them. But I say it from the hilltops. It’s made me who I am.”

Dressed casually and sitting by the Maribyrnong River in Avondale Heights, Jacobson is � ooded with pleasant memories. He’s as warm and genuine as plumber Kenny, the role he is most known for. Born in Essendon in 1970, Jacobson spent his childhood in Avondale Heights. Although his parents divorced when he was four, Jacobson’s blue eyes light up as he says growing up in the ’70s in what was the “tough western suburbs” was full of “laughter, mischief, magic and adventure”. Endless days were spent swimming, canoeing, � shing and cheekily spying on a hermit living on a makeshi� ra� tied to the shore , surrounded by his old cats and enclosed in a fence made of wire and cans.

“He is one of my most vivid childhood memories. To me he was a part of the river and one of the many characters of my childhood.” Jacobson says the Maribyrnong River is like “another member of our family” that continues to weave its way in and out of his life. “I spent a lot of my childhood canoeing along the river and always found it fascinating that the river was connected to ocean and if I kept going I could end up anywhere in the world,” he says.

Jacobson’s father Ron, who was born into a family of carnival performers, grew up in a tent on the banks of the Maribyrnong in Newstead Street. For more than 50 years Ron, who now lives in Maidstone, has owned the Maribyrnong Boxing Gym. Jacobson’s mother Jill, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2002, still lives in the Avondale Heights family home. Since the ’60s she has run the renowned Avonde Calisthenics College.

“My father is the funniest man I know,” Jacobson says. “He has shaped me completely. My mother’s strength inspires me every day. My parents have always backed me no matter what and steered me in the right direction. Parents shape you, they carve you out and make you who you are.”

It was a family � lled with laughter and love that sustained Jacobson and inspired him to perform. “My dad and my uncles were without a doubt the � rst comedians I met,” he says. “� ey were my real superheroes. I always felt when I saw Superman and Batman, yeah, you’re doing well but you just got to hope you don’t do the wrong thing to my dad or uncles because they’d be stronger than you.”

Jacobson’s journey to national stardom is almost as zig-zagging as his acting and singing career. Before he snagged the leading role in Kenny, which he made with his brother Clayton in 2006, he worked as a credit card fraud investigator, a medical supplies sales rep and a pyrotechnician for the likes of AC/DC and Guns N Roses.

It was while working as a festival event manager that Jacobson encountered portaloo suppliers Splashdown Toilets. Coincidentally, Clayton, who directed and co-wrote the � lm Kenny with Jacobson, had cleaned toilets to pay his way through � lm school. Jacobson says his encounters with the men who cleaned other people’s waste sparked the mockumentary.

� e � lm attracted a cult following and became a surprise hit, grossing almost $8 million at the Australian box o� ce. It was nominated for eight AFI awards, with Jacobson winning the award for best lead actor.

“� e men doing this job are some of the most genuine, kind-hearted, honest people I’ve ever met. � e thing about Kenny was that he resonated with a lot of people,” he says.

More than seven years later, Jacobson says people yell out “Kenny” to him more o� en than his own name. “I think some people still believe he’s a real person,” he says. “But I have always believed it’s far nicer to be remembered for something you did than forgotten for everything you’ve tried.”

From cleaning portaloos to co-hosting Top Gear Australia and starring in � lms including the father-son road trip � lm Charlie & Boots in 2009 with Paul Hogan, Surviving Georgia, Newcastle, Cactus and the short � lm � e Apprentice, Jacobson continues to reinvent himself.

He has also made waves in musicals alongside Geo� rey Rush and Rhonda Burchmore in Melbourne � eatre Company’s � e Drowsy Chaperone, and he won a Helpmann Award for best supporting actor in a musical for his performance as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls.

In 2009, Jacobson was thrust into the spotlight again for his most challenging acting role – trapped miner Brant Webb in the TV mini-series Beacons� eld. It revisited the Beacons� eld mine collapse where miners Webb and Todd Russell were trapped nearly a kilometre underground in the rock fall that killed their colleague Larry Knight on Anzac Day in 2006.

“� e � rst time I watched it, I had Brant and his wife Rachel sitting next to me and there I was re-enacting the 14 most terrifying days of his life,” he says. “Beacons� eld must be remembered as a tragedy because a life was lost. I spent a lot of time wondering if I was doing a good enough job. But a� er we had watched it, Brant shook my hand and Rachel gave me a kiss and that meant the world to me.”

Since then, Jacobson has found his largest audience on the small screen. � is year he hosted � e Great Australian Bake O� and starred as musician and father of two, Luce Tivoli, in the ABC’s Sunday night series � e Time of Our Lives.

While Jacobson seemingly became an overnight star, his memoir � e Long Road to Overnight Success, released this year,

reveals he spent his life preparing for stardom. But his most rewarding role is fatherhood. His three children, a daughter and a son with partner Felicity Hunter and an eight-year-old son from a previous relationship, are “my everything, my world”. “ Everything you do is in the hope you’ll provide them with a better life and in return you get love, and that’s a pretty good deal.”

He met Hunter six years ago and they have been inseparable since. “Felicity is my rock, my witness to everything I do,” he says. “She is the � rst person I come to see, ring or tell; she is my best mate. My life is her life and her life is mine.”

Never one to sit still for long, Jacobson has started � lming for the series Fat Tony & Co, about the life of underworld � gure Tony Mokbel, due out next year. Jacobson has been cast as Jim O’Brien, the former o� cer in charge of the Purana taskforce.

“I want to continue to entertain,” he says. “I want to continue to be a parent. I want my family and children to be proud of me and my partner to enjoy me as much as I enjoy her.” \

BRIEFS elders reach out to maoris, islanders

Youth program

Maori elders from across the western suburbs will walk the streets in a bid to help young people at risk.

� e group, known as the Victorian Maori Wardens, was launched in Hoppers Crossing earlier this month.

It aims to prevent Maori and Paci� c Islander young people ending up in prison.

Chairman James Hohepa Smith, a warden at Deer Park’s Metropolitan Remand Centre, became involved a� er noticing an increasing number of Islander youth coming to the centre in the past seven years.

“It is concerning,” he said. “We want to engage with youths on the street before they end up in custody.”

Mr Smith said the group had 84 members throughout Victoria, although most were based in the western suburbs.

Wardens will patrol areas where Islander young people are known to hang out and provide them with someone to talk to about their problems.

“A lot of Islander youth � nd it easier to open up with their own than the police. � ey see us as a big brother,’’ Mr Smith said.

“We hope to identify the issues and

problems facing our youths and redirect them to positive activities.”

� e group is seeking support from Victoria Police. It is hoped that police will agree to refer young people to the wardens for help and support.

� e group is modelled on the Queensland

Maori Wardens, which has been running since 2010.

Mr Smith said the role of wardens was steeped in New Zealand’s history, with elders regularly helping young people at risk of getting into trouble with police. \

If you make a mistake with a paintbrush or pencil, you can scrunch up the paper and start again. But a human canvas is a completely different story, admits

Bacchus Marsh tattooist Jade Baxter Smith, channelling an old memory.

“I still remember the first tattoo I ever did, 11 years ago now,” she says, laughing.

“It was so terrible. It was a star and a roller-skating girl, tattooed on a chest. I was so nervous for so long before and, looking back, it was just awful.”

Baxter Smith has come a long way since her brother recommended she channel her love of art into a tattoo apprenticeship in 2002.

“I’ve been running [Bacchus Marsh’s] Twisted By Design for close to four years now,” she says.

“I started because I’ve always been into drawing and I wanted something that was going to pay. I love putting art on people’s skin, something they can keep forever.”

Baxter Smith recently completed her most memorable tattoo yet – a Simpsons piece on someone’s back that took more than 120 hours to complete.

“It really does take a massive commitment from both parties. [The customer’s] been coming in for a full year, every few weeks, and we’ve just finished now.”

Baxter Smith’s walking masterpiece will feature in this year’s Australian Tattoo and Body Art Expo at the Melbourne Convention Centre from November 29 to December 1.

“I use any chance I can to see other artists and techniques that are out there,’’ she says.

‘‘There’s always new machines, needles, ink, ways to do things that already exist and can be improved.”

Baxter Smith says that of all her work, she has most confidence in her ‘colour realism’ tattoos. “I love my

portraits, realistic animals, bold bright colours. We’re lucky enough to have different artists for various pieces.”

The studio has been fortunate to have locals willing to lend their skin to the cause. “We’ve got a guy that comes in and he loves having new things tried on him. He’s a human canvas, literally. Most recently we tattooed nuts and bolts on his face. They look pretty amazing, and when he grows out his facial hair they disappear.”

But Baxter Smith advises people to think before they ink, and make it meaningful. “We make sure the design is right, long-term. If it’s a name, I’ll often try talking them out of it; they’re usually the ones regretted down the track.” \

T hinking about blowing the froth off the top of a delicious craft beer? Stop, think and photograph. That’s the message

from the organisers of BEERtography.Launched by The Great Australian Beer

Festival at Little Creatures, Fitzroy, on October 29, the competition asks amateur and professional photographers to capture lovely lagers, appetising ales and brisk bitters.

The winner will take home a tidy $1500 and have their photo hung at Little Creatures’ newest venture in Geelong.

But if you think it’s going to be as easy as whipping out the iPhone to snap your pot before you get to guzzling, think again.

Photographer Luzio Grossi, whose work has featured in Vogue, Rolling Stone and Harper’s Bazaar, will oversee the judging panel, and wants the winning picture to be “creative” and “aesthetically strong”.

“You can take a photograph of a beer, but we are looking for all aspects of craft beer, so it can be the making of it, or the hops, the grains, let your creativity in your mind really reach out,” he said.

“Excite me. I am going to put my pride and reputation on this because I think a lot of photography competitions are a joke.

“I am only one of the judges, but I really want Australia’s first BEERtography competition to have an absolute winner. I want this competition to send a message to all other photography competitions in Australia.”

The competition is the brainchild of Australian Beer Ambassadors, which launched the inaugural GABF in Geelong.

Organiser Kieran Blood said the second annual GABF, which will host 150

craft beers and ciders on February 1, was a “celebration and a celebration of the art that is craft beer”.

“They are extremely passionate people and very proud of what they

do,” he said. “What I think is probably the most

prestigious part of this [BEERtography competition] is having it hang as a permanent display at the new Little Creatures brewery in Geelong.”

Second prize is $500 and third is $200. All finalists will be displayed at next year’s GABF.

James Franco has given much to the world of cinema. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem satisfied with success as a hollywood star. Like Pinocchio, Franco yearns to be a real boy – or, in this case, a real artist. his desire to be taken seriously goes hand in hand with his innate gift for risibility, as evidenced by last week’s much-tweeted selfie, in which Franco captured and shared his profound grief at the LaX shootings (from business class, naturally).

So what of his As I Lay Dying? well, this straight-to-dVd film reeks of adolescent pretension, even if Franco does capture something of william Faulkner’s disconnected style, if not his substance. tricksy split-screens and straight-to-camera monologues will probably alienate more viewers than they woo, but they bring a suitably heightened, hypnotic air. Strong performances all round leaven the sometimes leaden dialogue. Franco’s great achievement, however, is to have made a film likely to prove as infuriating to film students as the novel long has to english classes. \

Reporting to the Commercial Business Manager, the primary purpose of this role is to provide administrative and marketing support.

Essential to perform this role will be advanced Microsoft Offi ce Suite skills. Experience in compiling and reporting fi nancial information and in Executive diary management.

We expect that you will possess a positive and pro-active attitude along with the desire to achieve a high standard of work, exceptional attention to detail, an excellent verbal and written communication style and customer focused service skills. We would expect the successful candidate be a self-starter who is willing and able to take initiative and be able to meet deadlines.

Dairy Industry background and experience, with an appreciation of animal breeding would stand you in good stead for this role.

This is a six month contracted role located in Bacchus Marsh and some domestic travel may be required.

Melton is far from needing to go through a rebuilding phase, but if it did the club’s burgeoning young talent stocks would stand it in good stead.

With club products making a mark in Premier Cricket and a host of teenagers rising through the ranks, the Lions are reaping the bene� ts of a year-round approach to player development.

Melton has an established recruiting base in local clubs such as Melton Centrals, Melton South and West Saints, while this past winter the club took steps to establish the pathway for talented youngsters in the broader region.

Melton Hatch Shield coach Bill Clarke coming on board as junior talent development coach was a signi� cant step in setting up the club’s junior development and talent ID program.

“Melton Cricket Club hoped this program would become a signi� cant pathway for the talented juniors,” Clarke said.

“� e youngsters need look no further than Patrick McKenna, who represented the Melton club over the past two seasons in the � rst XI as a 16 and 17-year old.”

McKenna, from Gisborne, captained the Victorian under-17 team, has since gone on to play � rst XI Premier Cricket with Carlton and was recently selected in the Victorian

under-19 team. � rough the ranks, the development program is having an e� ect.

While the � rst XI, reigning premier in VSDCA, is a hard unit to break into, the second XI is starting to � ll up with the club’s next generation.

Teenage players such as Jake � ornton- Gielen, Dylan Clarke and Jake Charge are playing second XI. Tom Rogers started in the thirds but has worked his way up to the

seconds, as did James Challis for a game recently.

� ornton-Gielen has a 50 to his name in the seconds this season, while Clarke, an o� -spinner, has seven wickets to date, including a

haul of 4-21 against Yarraville.“We really believe in the talent pool

of kids between about 15 and 17,” Melton vice-president Craig Payne said.

Payne said other clubs in the Melton area had to be congratulated for pushing their promising players towards the VSDCA system.

“Our [Melton] youngsters have formed an under-17.5 side playing in the Williamstown [WDCA] competition,” Payne said. “� ey play in the morning as a group before heading o� to their senior matches in the a� ernoon.”

Another Melton product for the youngsters to emulate is Footscray Edgewater’s Dylan Kight. � e keeper-batsman has become a mainstay of the Bulldogs’ � rst XI in recent seasons.

Eynesbury led by 101 runs on the � rst innings after day one and with a declaration immediately went about trying to bowl out the Rams a second time. Blair Sole’s 4-37 did the damage as Rockbank was dismissed for 152 second time around, a modest lead. Sole and week-one centurion Justin Siedlecki reached 0-57 off nine overs to complete the outright result. Rockbank is now clear on top of the AE Lowe Shield table with 28 points from Altona Sports on 26, while Rockbank (12) is � fth on percentage behind fourth-placed United Tarneit. \

BCADarley is off the mark after beating Coronet City by 201 runs in � rst grade at the weekend. The Lions were winless after two games but powered through the Coronet City lineup on Saturday, defending 6-294 by dismissing the visitors to Darley Park for just 93. Brian Wheelahan was near-unplayable as his 9.2 overs yielded 5-8. Terrence Curwan King also walked off with impressive � gures, 4-11 off eight overs. Darley is at home for the next two weekends to East Ballarat. \

� e disappointment of a � rst defeat for the season didn’t last long for Diggers Rest Bulla Village as the Burras plundered 9-284 on the opening day of their Gisborne District Cricket Association B-grade clash with Rupertswood.

� e battle of � rsts sits in the Burras’ favour a� er Paul Deeble (92) and Lincoln Grant (74) set up the big score with a 120-run stand for the second wicket.

Lyndon Dowsett hit 48 in the middle order, while Jay King (4-54) was best of the Rupo bowlers.

Rupertswood’s chase starts on Saturday.

In McIntyre Cup, St Anthonys bowlers were sent to all corners of Bullengarook Reserve as Riddell compiled 4-383 o� 63 overs.

Heath Castle (209no) and Daniel Fisk (102) were the main tormentors as the duo put on 193 for the third wicket.

At Maddingley Park, a 140-run stand for the fourth wicket put Bacchus Marsh in control of its clash with Romsey.

Justin McDonald (88) and Scott Wake� eld (85) were responsible for pushing Bacchus Marsh to 7-280 by stumps.

Sunbury United batted the full day against Woodend but at nowhere near the same run rate. Adam Smith (48) guided United through a top-order wobble of 3-9 that le� it 4-73. Lower-order runs pushed United to 166 at the close.

Wallan recovered from 4-45 and 6-89 to bat out the day against Sunbury by posting 9-155. \

A weekend wipeout had both Melton’s teams in WDCA A-Turf out in double � gures on the way to defeats on Saturday.

Melton Centrals capitulated for 51 in a 105-run loss to Grand United.

Centrals held on to their top-four spot in spite of heavy defeat.

Centrals’ 21 points for fourth trails Williamstown Colts on percentage and is three better than � � h-placed Williamstown Imperials.

Grand United successfully defended its 9-156 o� 40 overs by bowling out Centrals for 51 o� 22.

Melton South fared slightly better but was still only brie� y in the hunt on the way to a 100-run loss to Gellibrand.

Michael Pisani (3-23) was best of the South bowlers as Gellibrand made 9-197 batting � rst.

Melton South reached 2-56 but a collapse of 4-8 hollowed out the middle order as South was all out 97.

Bacchus Marsh was swept o� its home green and Kyneton Golf le� with all 18 points in Central Highlands Bowls division 1 on Saturday.

Bacchus Marsh (49 points) is losing touch with the top three but still holds fourth spot ahead of Kyneton (44).

Kyneton Golf (third, 66) won 18-132 to Bacchus Marsh’s 0-80 and racked up some big rink margins in the process.

Dylan Filuk was Bacchus Marsh’s most competitive skip, albeit down 27-20 to Kyneton Golf’s Rick Turner.

Turner and Woodend’s Matthew Bacon are the leading skips a� er � ve weeks with identical 5/5, +68 records.

Kyneton Golf’s Mark Andrews beat Amy Gloury 37-20, Dan Lonsdale won 35-18 against Justin Webster, and Steve Taylor won 33-18 against Alan Maher.
