3. Corrective action. Programs oiVeight re-duction will be prescribed only by a physician.It is the responsibility of the physician to establishthat obesity (as defined in para. 8, app I, Ali 40-501) does exist-ahd.tOidetermine its cause.' A unitcommander may, for diagnostic purposes onlorder a member of his command to report to theNapplicable medical treatment facility-when-in thecommander's opinion a weight reduction programwould substantially improve the member's per-formance of duty. but who fail to do so may be made the subject ofappropriate corrective or disciplinary action.When the physician determines that the obesity is :the result of a medical condition, which is unfitting •'*•for retention, the disease entity will be identifiedand disposition made under the provisions of AR635-40. When the physician determines that theobesity is not the result of a medical condition, hewill prescribe a weight reduction program to as-sist the individual in achieving optimum bodyweight. - Members will.bejencouraged to partici-pate fully in.this weight reduction program and in-formed of the advantages of maintaining a levelof physical conditioning as presented in All 600-9 (Army Physical Fitness Program) ; DA Pam21-1 (Physical Fitness Program for Staff andSpecialist Personnel) ; and DA Pam 21-2 (Physi-cal Fitness Program for Women in the Army).Enlisted .personnel-will not-be,separated prior to' i ': * I I ' ml* ' ' M J . 4. Criteria for' enlistment or reehlistment.The following additional eligibility criteria willbe applied for reenlistment of male and female per-sonnel' iii the Regular Army, upon or prior to ex-piration of present term of service, and for' theenlistment in the Regular Army' of male personnelfrom within the service.

. - a. Male personnel. Male personnel, classifiedas obese by a physician, may not exceed in weightthe current maximum standard for induction, en-listment, or appointment applicable to their at-tained age and height, as contained -in .table I,appendix III, AR 40-501.

•*Z>. Feinale personnel. < Female personnel, clas-sified as obese by 'a physician, may not exceed inweight the current maximum standard for initialprocurement for their attained age and height, ascontained in table II, appendix III, AR 40-501.

inability or unwillingness to expend effort. AHcommissioned and warrant officers, whose weightexceeds that prescribed for appointment, who areclassified by a-physician as'obese, and whose use-fulness to the service is substantially affected byfailure to achieve and maintain desirable weightlevels, will be carefully evaluated for eliminationunder the provisions of AR 635-105.

7. Administration of program. Commanderswill disseminate the information contained hereinto all personnel,,and will administer the weightcontrol program. Commanders will make fre-quent checks of all personnel in their units toinsure early detection of those who are becomingobese, and will commence corrective action. -Per-sonnel whose weight exceeds the appropriatestandard established in table I and II, appendixIII, AR 40-501, and whose obesity has been deter-

mined by a physician to be attributable to non-medical causes will be placed on a medically super-vised weight reduction program regardless of thedate of expiration of their term of service. Thesepersonnel will be informed that failure'to achieveand maintain an acceptable body weight will re-sult in' their not meeting the eligibility criteriafonrreenlistment. Commanders will initiate fol-lowup action to insure that these personnelfollow (he prescribed weight reduction programas determined by a physician. In addition, .en-listed personnel classified as obese by a physician,when obesity is attributable to nonmedical causes,will .be required to 'complete DA Form 2738-R(fig. 1) which will be reproduced locally on 8- by5Tinch paper. Completed form, witnessed by theimmediate commander concerned, will be ,placedin the-field 201 file of the individual concerned.
