March 18, 2018The Fifth Sunday in Lent

A Place of Healing, Hospitality and Hope

Entrance Greeting and Announcements Entrance of the Light of Christ *Invocation*Hymn of Praise: “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” p. 133*Psalter “Psalm 51: 1-12” p. 785*Affirmation of Faith: The Apostle’s Creed p. 881

Proclamation Time for Children Rev. Brown Lenten Candle Extinguishing

During this time of Lenten preparation, we think of those who turned away from the light of Jesus. And we remember that we, too, turn away. The Pharisees fancied themselves as modern, up-to-date thinkers. But they so enjoyed the power they possessed; they were unable to recognize the power of God in Jesus. We are people of power. We each consume ten times more of the earth's resources than do other global citizens. Our power often blinds us to the simple power of Jesus' love for all creation and all people. We extinguish the fifth candle, fearful that our own powerful status will close our eyes and hearts to the light of Jesus.

AnthemScripture Reading for Today

Mark 1: 9-15 (NRSV)9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” 12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the

wilderness. 13 He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

2 Corinthians 12: 7b-10 (NRSV)

7 even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. 8 Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, 9 but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.
