ESPAÑOL II, 2018-19

Mrs. Russo e-mail: [email protected]

MHS telephone number: 236-5810 Course objectives:

- to increase your knowledge, awareness and respect of the language and culture of Spanish-speaking people throughout the world

- to improve your skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. It is my goal that by the end of the school year, you are able to speak more naturally in Spanish, interpret phrases and more complicated vocabulary when listening, comprehend more complex texts when reading, converse on a wider range of topics and write complete thoughts more clearly and creatively.

- to create an environment in which all students can experience success and enjoy learning. Your success in this class, as in most everything, depends largely upon you and your efforts.

Required materials:

Notebook: For this class you should have a small three-ring binder and folder OR single subject notebook and folder for class notes, homework and handouts. This notebook and folder should be used ONLY for Spanish.

Handouts: you will receive many handouts throughout the year. Vocabulary lists and notes that are provided should be organized and kept for the whole year.

Suggested materials:

Class expectations:

You have the right to be part of a class in which you can learn and achieve to the best of your ability. You also have the responsibility to conduct yourself in a way that allows every other student to do that as well.

-comprender y apreciar nuestras diferencias

- There will be frequent small quizzes and unit tests throughout the year. If you are absent on the day of an exam, it is your responsibility to see me to arrange for a make-up. If you are not pleased with your grade, quizzes on grammar concepts are retake-able within 1 week, as long as you have demonstrated effort to improve your understanding.

- The homework and notice of upcoming exams will be written on the board in the room by the word “TAREA”. I update my website on the Marlboro High School page to include the new homework each day. Many of your homework assignments will also be posted to our Google Classroom. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to download and print / get copies of handouts, assignments and notes you missed. Extra photocopies are in the bin marked for Level 2 near the door of the classroom.

- You will be graded throughout the year on your speaking ability. You will be working on short conversations, presentations or dialogues, alone and with partners.

- I am available for extra help during periods 1, 2, 6 and 7 and can usually be found in Room 208.

- I will post on the website and write on the board each Monday, the day(s) for after school help that week. I am usually here until at least 3:15 each day. Please seek extra help if you have a question!

Grading Procedures: Grades are based on a total point system. Most homework assignments will be checked or collected and graded. Homework assignments and “do-nows” are typically worth between 5 and 15 points. Quizzes are usually worth 30 – 60 points, while unit tests and projects are typically worth more. Your final grade will be derived from the average of each of the four quarters and the final exam.

Updated averages will be posted frequently on the wall in the classroom, arranged in random order by student ID#, so that you may monitor your progress.

I ask only that you try your best! ¡Bienvenidos! I am looking forward to a wonderful year!

Words of Wisdom from last year’s Level 2 students:

“Welcome to high school! If you’re nervous, don’t be!”“Make the best of freshman year because it goes by really fast!”“High school is wild. People are going to change. Stay true to yourself no matter what.”“Study every night even if you don’t have a test because you will be more prepared.”“Pay attention, don’t talk in class and remember to be organized. It will make the year easier!”“Make new friends, be social, get involved and most of all, be yourself.”“Don’t get into the drama; walk away from it.”

“Change is scary but necessary. Don’t feel like you have to be a certain way because that’s how you were in Middle School. Embrace change.”“Don’t be mean to teachers - or anyone.” “Build bonds with teachers and other students.”“ASK FOR HELP when you need it!” “Do not be afraid to admit that you don’t understand something.”“Do all of your work because your grades will drop more than you think and it won’t feel good.”“For Spanish, do your homework on your own without using Google Translate or copying.” “Participate in Spanish class, even if you are nervous and the words will stick!” “Retake quizzes when that option is available.” “Try to manage your time wisely and do not procrastinate.”“Always do your best. People will notice and it shows your true character.”“Know your own worth. Don’t let toxic people ruin your self esteem. Stay confident.“Each year matters for college.”“It’s easier than it seems!”

Miscellaneous:

“Try and find the fastest way to your classes during your first week of school.”“Join extracurricular activities!”“Make friends with upperclassmen. Some of them will be the greatest people you’ll ever meet!”“If your friends are not being trustworthy and are showing you red flags, you should make some new

friends.”
