Without your time the expeditions simply wouldn’t be able to run. In order to run the DofE we must ensure that we meet certain ratios; 1 qualified staff member to 1 helper etc. These ratio’s vary at each level. So I really do mean it when I say that the DofE wouldn’t be able to run without you! I bet by now you are wondering what your role entails? Well hopefully the information contained below will give you an insight into the role. The pupils will be travelling a fair distance to reach campsites and it is the job of all staff and helpers involved to ensure that they complete their journey safely whilst not interfering with the 20 conditions set by the DofE http://www.dofe.info/en/content/cms/doing-your-dofe/activities-sections/expedition/20- conditions/ . Duties of staff and helpers will often include the following: Welfare checks at various checkpoints (topping pupils up with water/driving to each checkpoint). Providing reassurance and boosting the moral of the teams (for many what they are doing is a massive thing for them). Undertaking remote supervision (our technical way of saying observe from afar). Offer assistance should a group get into any major difficulties that could be unsafe for the group. Promoting good behaviour of pupils (this has to be said is rarely needed). Please remember that pupils at all times should be self-sufficient in order to meet the requirements of the DofE. However tempting it is to provide pupils with things, food etc. Please do not as it could jeopardise them passing their DofE. Often helpers spent a large amount of time in their vehicles, please bare this in mind and plan for this by packing enough food and water. Additionally the weather can turn, so it is important that you plan for such events by bringing correct clothing and footwear (wellingtons are not recommended, as they do not provide correct ankle support). Please ensure that you check the weather forecast beforehand and if needed pack additional items (sun cream, extra hat/gloves etc). I recommend www.mwis.org.uk or www.yr.no for an accurate forecast. Please only do tasks you feel comfortable with and if you are unsure then please consult with a leader. Mileage can be claimed at currently 45p per mile, please ask for a claim form whilst on expedition or email [email protected] if you wish to submit a claim. Campsite fees are already paid for you if you are staying overnight. Should you require any further information then please do not hesitate to contact Mr Crowley-Volpato (Mr C-V) at the following email address:

Information for Helping on Expeditions

Dear Helper,

Firstly I would like to thank you for giving up your time to help on an expedition.

The pupils will be travelling a fair distance to reach campsites and it is the job of all staff and helpers involved to ensure that they complete their journey safely whilst not interfering with the 20 conditions set by the DofE http://www.dofe.info/en/content/cms/doing-your-dofe/activities-sections/expedition/20-conditions/ .

Duties of staff and helpers will often include the following:

Welfare checks at various checkpoints (topping pupils up with water/driving to each checkpoint).
