National Gratitude Month is an annual designation observed in November. Gratitude is more than simply saying “thank you.” Gratitude’s amazing powers have the ability to shift us from focusing on the negative to appreciating what is positive in our lives. Practicing daily gratitude gives us a deeper connection to ourselves, the world around us and to our Creator. Everything in our lives has the ability to improve when we are grateful. Research has shown that gratitude can enhance our moods, decrease stress and drastically improve our overall level of health and wellbeing. On average, grateful people tend to have fewer stress related illnesses and experience less depression and lowered blood pressure, they are more physically fit, they are happier, have a higher income, more satisfying personal and professional relationships and will be better liked. Here at Shore House, we are very grateful for the donations and the reward programs we partake in. One program we are extremely grateful for, is TerraCycle. Recently, we have accumulated thousands of points through their recycling program. Not only can we use these points to benefit Shore House, we get to use these points to donate to various causes. We have donated to causes like wildlife preservation, Feeding America, reducing carbon, protecting the rainforest, and providing clean drinking water. We are able to show how grateful we are for TerraCycle, by giving back on a global level. Shore House Gazette

Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club Beach Day

On Friday September 15, members and staff enjoyed the last days of summer at the beach. Thanks to board member Mary Jane Kroon, we were treated to a day at her beach club. Members took a dip in the pool, played pickle ball and took a walk along the water. The weather was perfect, not too hot with a slight breeze and no humidity. We ate lunch outside in the fresh air. We were even joined by a praying mantis. It was a great way to end the summer.

Monmouth County Public Employees Campaign Kick-Off Fair

Shore House has been named as one of the beneficiaries for Monmouth County Public Employee Charitable Campaign. We were invited to participate in the Campaign Kick-off Fair to introduce ourselves to the over 2,800 workers Monmouth County employs. Each has the option to choose Shore House as a designated charity from their paycheck. While there we spoke with Freeholders John P. Curley, Lillian G. Burry and Thomas A. Arnone. It was another great way to gain visibility for all the great work Shore House does.

The Clubhouse has recreational and social programs during evenings and on weekends. Holidays are celebrated on the actual day they are

observed.

Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.

Shore House Attends Health Improvement Committee of Monmouth County Meeting

By: Kerri Zeblisky, Jessica Viscuso & Jessica Bragen

On Wednesday, September 20th, Shore House attended HICMC meeting and participated in the Mental Health focus group. At this time, the committee aims to increase access to and knowledge of mental, behavioral, and substance use resources in Monmouth County. Kerri, Jess V and Jess B were able to collaborate with individuals from various Monmouth County agencies in creating an action plan to achieve this goal. This included gathering a list of resources, organizing this list into types of resource as well as creating a short explanation for each type of resource (i.e. inpatient mental health, intensive outpatient program, community health program).

“This is important,” Jess B states, “because from my experience, there are so many resources out there on so many different directories; it seems disjointed, and having a central resource directory can streamline the difficult process of finding the help that you need.”

Kerri Z notes, “I think when the resources directory comes out Shore House should be listed as one, as we are the only clubhouse in the state of New Jersey.”

This action plan included increasing implementation of an 8-hour Mental Health First Aid class, which has already been established and is being used throughout Monmouth County. The goal is to train at least 100 community members. The class is a basic training on which teaches participants how to recognize as well as respond to someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis. The training includes a 5-step plan to help someone in crisis. This is a great opportunity for everyone, as we know that 1 in 5 adults will experience a mental illness in any given year.

The purpose of the HICMC meeting was to introduce connectivity of services to those in the community who experience mental, behavioral, and substance abuse conditions. The action plan implemented, heavily impacts Shore House and hundreds of other agencies in Monmouth County. Over the course of the next four years, the goal is to educate 5000 individuals about mental health and substance use. Part of Shore House’s mission is to educate the community about the stigma of mental health. The community outreach we partake in, makes a positive contribution to the goals set by the county.

“Our role is so important in this improvement plan. Clubhouse models are so meaningful to this plan, because they pro-actively address the prioritized community mental health needs.” - Jessica V.

Wellness & MaintenanceAs fall approaches, it is time to wrap up our garden. We enjoyed many delicious vegetables this season, but all good things must come to an end. We harvested the vegetables and tilled the soil in preparation for the winter months. We look forward to the spring.

Research & Development We are expanding our social media presence to include Instagram. Members are learning how to use this new tool. Check us out at Instagram/shorehousenj.
