Welcome to White Rose Cheer – a new, innovative program led by experienced coaches delivering cheerleading to schools across Yorkshire.

What is cheerleading? Cheerleading has a stereotypical image of pom-poms and short skirts. In fact, it is an athletic discipline which improves confidence, co-ordination, and flexibility as well as encouraging team work. We have found it to be a great way for children, in particular girls, to get more involved in physical activity. Even children that don’t enjoy ‘traditional’ sports and activities or aren’t particularly athletic seem to really enjoy cheerleading as it is by nature, a fun activity.

Modern competitive cheerleading consists of a combination of gymnastics, dance and acrobatic stunts. Teams of up to 35 members compete against other clubs according to age and ability levels. Routines last for 2 minutes 30 seconds and are set to music.

What we at White Rose Cheer can offer you

Package 1: Full or half day workshops:

Our full and half day workshops are planned and led by our Program Director and generally run for the main 6 hours of the school day. Our overall aim of these days are to give young people the basics skills involved in cheerleading and there’s a large emphasis on fun!

The way the day runs can be totally flexible and personal to your school’s needs. We can run slots per class from one hour up to three, depending on how in-depth you wish the sessions to be. Our Program Director holds QTS and can cover PPA.

Whilst we request that teachers/teaching assistants are in attendance at sessions, we do not require that they get involved although we (and the children) love it when they do!

Your day can include an accelerated session (either in one of the school day sessions, lunchtime or after school if available on your chosen day) intended specifically for those identified as Gifted and Talented in Physical Education, or in any of the fields of dance, gymnastics, or those who have experienced cheerleading before.

All pupils will be given information on White Rose Cheer’s competitive club which runs in Morley, Leeds, or the nearest satellite club to the school geographically.

Costs vary from £200-250 per full day, and £100-150 per half day, depending on your particular school’s needs.

Our Youth Age Team (school years 5-7) at their first

competition in Sheffield in March 2016. Many of the children in this

team were recruited from the schools we work with, creating the school-to-club partnership.

“My year three class had a fantastic day enjoying a White Rose Cheer full day workshop. We shared the day with our other Year 3 class and each class enjoyed three hours each of stunting, tumbling, cheering and routine building. All they talk about now is cheerleading and are keen for us to do it every day!”

Package 2: Curriculum Physical Education:

Priced at £200 for a 6 week course – one full hour per week

Qualified Primary School teacher can incorporate cheerleading into Physical Education lessons for KS1, KS2 and KS3 through the dance and gymnastics strands.

Can also provide a pure focus on dance and/or gymnastics, taught through skills of agility, balance and co-ordination.

Classes can be used as PPA cover, or as a means to up-skill staff by team-teaching. In the case of the latter, your coach can brief staff on all lesson plans and the aim will be for them to gradually take the lead on sessions.

The 6 week session can focus on building a routine to be performed at a competition or other event, or can focus solely on skills.

Any other variations on the PE curriculum can be discussed with us and a tailor-made program developed if preferable.

Depending on the timing of the 6 week block, all PE classes can work towards attendance at the School Competition held in Spring 2. More details on pg7!

Package 3: Extra Curricular Clubs:

Package 3: Extra-Curricular Provision Priced at £40 per hour. (Cost can be tailored accordingly in the

instance of differing time durations, multiple clubs, or clubs that will run indefinitely.)

All Active Schools can enjoy a 10% discount on all classes. Attendance at cheerleading club can be a heavy contributor to

meeting the Government’s recommendation of 2 hours Physical Activity per week.

Led by Qualified Primary School teacher and cheerleading coach. Can be held as a breakfast club, lunchtime club, or after school club. The principal aim would be to teach children the basics of

cheerleading stunting, tumbling and dancing, and creating a routine incorporating them all.

Your school would be invited to attend our Schools Competition, held at Bruntcliffe Academy, during the Spring 2 half term (exact date TBC) 3-6pm. Please see pg 7 for more information on this!

Your school would also have the opportunity to attend a regional competition in Leeds led by Incredibly Cool Events, on Saturday 9th June (cheerleading) or Sunday 10th June (pom dance).

“The best day of the week at school is Monday, because that’s when we have cheerleading club! Our cheerleading team is called Phoenix and every week we work hard doing death-defying stunts, and amazing tumbles. We have been to two competitions – one in Newcastle and one in Blackpool. All of our parents came to watch! We came second at one of our competitions and won a massive trophy which is now in our school hall. I now also compete at White Rose Cheer because I loved it so much and hope to one day attend the World Championships in Orlando, Florida. It’s definitely my favourite sport!”

Mia, Year 6, Bramley St Peters Primary School
