Curriculum Focus and rationale: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY K-6 Duration: One Full DaySyllabus Outcomes

ST3-4WS – investigates by posing question, including testable questions, making predictions and gathering data to draw evidence – based conclusions and develop explanations.

ST3-11LW - describes some physical conditions of the environment and how these affect the growth and survival of living things

Syllabus ContentStudents question and predict by:• predicting what the findings of an investigation might be (ACSIS231, ACSIS232)Students plan investigations by:• with guidance, planning appropriate investigation methods to test predictions, answer questions or solve problems including surveys, fieldwork, research and fair tests (ACSIS086, ACSIS103, ACSHE081, ACSHE098)• deciding which variable should be changed and measured in fair tests while keepingeverything else the same (ACSIS087, ACSIS104)

The growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment. (ACSSU094)Students:• make predictions about how changing the physical conditions of the environment impacts on the growth and survival of living things, eg different amounts of light or water on plant growth or the effect of different temperatures on the growth of yeast or bread mould• use gathered data to develop explanations about how changing the physical conditions of the environment affects the growth and survival of living things

Learning across the curriculumEN3-1A- communicates effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes using increasingly challenging topics, ideas, issues and language forms and features:

- participate in and contribute to discussions, clarifying and interrogating ideas, developing and supporting arguments, sharing and evaluating information, experiences and opinions

MA3-2WM – selects and applies appropriate problem-solving strategies, including the use of digital technologies, in undertaking investigations.MA3-9MG- selects and uses the appropriate unit and device to measure lengths and distances, calculates perimeters and converts between units of lengthSustainability: Investigating systems in the natural and made environments.

Stage 3 RHEEC PROGRAM: Marvellous Microbes

Overview: Students immerse themselves in the world of Micro-organisms. They learn about the characteristics and properties of Micro-organisms. They also experience using Microscopes; fair scientific testing; accurate data collection; hypothesising and drawing knowledge based conclusions.

Learning Activity OneDiscussion of types of microbes and the functions they fill, using a PowerPoint as a catalyst for dialogue

BIOLABResources: Power point, Laptop, Data projector, cords box, chair

Learning Activity TwoFun with Microscopes activity, students in 8 groups, use microscopes to investigate and record findings.

BIOLABResources: Microscopes; Work booklet, Slides, Pencils, Erasers, Sharpeners, Power boards, Tables.

Learning Activity ThreeMicrobe soup. Using a digital microscope, students investigate and record the microbes in ‘Hay Soup’.

BIOLABResources: Power point, Laptop, Data projector, cords box, chair, hay soup; digital microscope

Learning Activity FourMicrobe Magic: Petrie dish experiment. In groups of 3, students act as Microbiologists and have to record the microbial growth on petrie dishes. (From swabs done prior to day).

BIOLABResources: Sterile petrie dishes with agar, swab sheets, disposable gloves, cotton buds, iPad or camera, texta, sticky tape, access to incubator, microscopes, Work booklet, Slides, Pencils, Erasers, Sharpeners, Power boards, Tables.

Learning Activity FiveMicrobes and food: My favourite Microbes (chocolate and yogurt). Discuss how microbes are used in the production of food. Cook Yoghurt and chocolate muffins.

KITCHENResources: Work booklet, Cooking utensils, ingredients.

Learning Activity SixMicrobes to scale activity: In groups, students create a model to scale, creating different types of microbes

CARPARKResources: Chalk, Micro- organism Scale chart

Learning Activity SevenConclusion: Students take part in a concluding activity; reinforcing learnt information.

BIOLABResources: Interesting Fact cards
