Purpose

3

The Music program at Trinity seeks to give high quality performances of a variety of repertoire from various stylistic periods and cultures around the world.  There are many vocal and instrumental ensembles to choose from, with plenty of performing opportunities throughout the year.  In all the arts, Trinity’s program strives to be pleasing to God and teaches our students to share the gifts He has given to the school, church, and to the community of Bend.

Goals and Objectives: To provide students with a high-quality musical experience To expose students to the best of choral and instrument literature To provide development both for the individual singer/instrumentalist

as well as the ensemble To learn to work as a team To provide many opportunities to learn about music; its progress,

structure, and expression. To create an awareness of different styles of music To increase awareness of how music is unique in its animated and

communicative nature To glorify God in all that we do

Classroom Expectations1. Attend all rehearsals prepared to participate (a.k.a SING!). Be in your

assigned seat and ready to go at the start of rehearsal. It is expected you will bring a pencil and all music in the folder assigned to you. All music MUST be in your folder. Folders will be checked periodically, and missing or damaged music may result in a lower grade.

2. Treat everyone equally and with the respect they deserve. Please, no talking over someone else (i.e. the Director), so that we don’t waste time having to repeat instructions. Leave your attitudes at the door. Remember, you show respect you get respect!

3. NO GUM CHEWING during rehearsals or performances. NO cell phones during rehearsal, unless the Director asks you to use them. You don’t need them for most things during choir and they can become a distraction. You’ll be ok.

4. Every day you NEED to have: folder with music, pencil(s), theory book & water bottle

5. Acceptable Performance Level: The Director will make every attempt to indicate areas within each section (SATB) that need work. It is the student’s responsibility, however, to practice the music and be prepared by each performance date. This includes memorization in

4

some cases. It is the student’s responsibility if he/she needs extra help, to seek assistance from the teacher or a classmate outside of class time.

Disruption policyWith limited rehearsal time, every second counts. While we want to have fun in class, there are items that can cause disruptions and can even hinder healthy singing. These things can include: texting, cell phone ringers, gum chewing, poor attitudes/posture, etc. These disruptions are not acceptable and will result in points being deducted from your daily grade. If disruptions continue, you will be sent to the office. Please don’t waste everyone’s time.

Bathroom PolicyBecause getting up and going to the bathroom during rehearsal can be disruptive (although sometimes VERY important), each student will get FIVE bathroom passes for the semester. At the end of each semester, they can turn in unused bathroom passes for extra credit. So, plan ahead!

Evaluation of Student Work (Concert Choir only)To get an “A” in choir, students have to do more than just show up and sing. They will receive five daily participation points if they are on time. fully prepared and are participating in the rehearsal. They will lose points for unpreparedness or misbehavior. Periodic quizzes will be given on the ear-training books that are worked on in class.

55% of the grade is Evidence: musicianship quizzes, evaluations and concerts30% of the grade is Learning Experiences which includes daily participation15% is the Final: there will be a final at the end of each semester

Concert/Semester Evaluations (Concert Choir Only)There will be written and video evaluations done three times each year: beginning of the year and at the end of each semester. These will be used solely to keep track of how each student is doing, but they do get a grade for actually doing the work. In addition, there will be a written paper at the end of each of the three main concerts. This will all be discussed in more detail during class.

Absence PolicyBecause 95% of the work we do in music is in rehearsal, all absences—even excused—result in the loss of daily participation points. In Concert Choir if an absence is excused, students can make up the points by doing their theory workbook and checking in with the director to see what they can work on to be prepared for the next rehearsal. If the ensemble is extra-curricular,

5

more than 3 absences (excused or unexcused) will be subject to potential removal from the ensemble.

Performance Attendance PolicyALL performances are MANDATORY. There will several concerts and church services where TLHS Music Ensembles will be asked to sing or play. Most of these will be outside of class time, a few being on Sunday mornings. Music students are expected to arrange personal commitments around scheduled performances (see the yearly calendar below). Students and parents will be given as much advance notice as possible when changes occur. Each of the main concerts will also have a group of students assigned to clean up. They will sign up in class and are expected to stay and help after those concerts.

Alternative ParticipationStudents with a sore throat or students who experience physical pain in the throat when singing should not sing! If a student is at school and feels too ill to participate in choir normally, they should be prepared to follow along with the music in rehearsal and take notes, so they can still be learning and not miss anything important. They are not allowed to work on other homework during rehearsal. If they have a fever they should stay home.

EligibilityConcert Choir is a graded class, not an extra-curricular activity. That means the usual eligibility requirements for extra-curricular activities (i.e. sports, solar car, musical) do not apply to this class. They do apply for all other music ensembles including Bella Voce, Bella Man, Handbells, Worship Band, Band, Percussion, as well as involvement in the Spring Musical. Please check the TLHS Handbook for eligibility requirements. Checks will be done every 3 weeks or so.

Use and Care of MusicThe music the students use in class belongs to Trinity Lutheran High School! It is expensive! Students will not fold, tear, write on with pen or highlighter, or otherwise damage the music. It should be kept safe in the folder AT ALL TIMES. Any student who doesn’t return their music or folder or returns damaged items will incur a charge to replace the lost/damaged music. Damaged, lost or stolen music will need to be replaced at the student’s expense, with a minimum charge of $3 a piece. Music can be written on with PENCIL ONLY, and markings must be neat.

6

Concert AttireEach student who is involved in a music ensemble at Trinity will be required to buy a Trinity Music polo shirt. Shirts are $25 each. Orders will be taken in September. These polos will be worn when the ensembles perform at churches, festivals, and as told by the Director. Sweatshirts, jackets and other items with the Trinity Music logo are also for sale. Parents can buy Trinity music gear as well. Order forms will be given out in class and available in the office.

For select performances students will wear “all black concert attire”. More details will be discussed in rehearsal but here are some guidelines:

Guys: Black dress pants (no jeans!) Black dress belt Black dress socks Black dress shoes (no sneakers!) Black collared, dress shirt, long sleeve only Long, red tie (to be provided by TLHS Music Dept.)

Girls: Black dress pants or long skirt (needs to be below the knees)

-if wearing a skirt, must have their own black nylons, NOT leggings

Black dress shoes (no high heels or open toes! No decorations, all black)

Black dress top; all one shade and no sheer. Needs to have sleeves, no tank top. Shirt only, no sweater on top.

Red Silk Scarves (to be provided by TLHS Music Dept.)

Please make sure you get ‘black’ and not ‘brown’, or ‘grey’, or any other dark color. Being in the proper attire is part of each concert grade. It is important that the ensemble looks sharp and that everyone is uniform, so that no one sticks out and causes distractions during a performance. No substitutions will be accepted!

Choir TourThe choir tour is an important part of the choral program. Not only do tours provide a great opportunity for seeing another part of the country, but they help make more well-rounded singers and better team players. In other words: a better choral ensemble. It is a chance for them to sing for a

7

different group of people, as well as a chance to give a part of their music to the rest of the world. This year we will be going to Nashville, TN! There will be more information in September and the first payment will be due at the beginning of October. While not required to go, choir members are highly encouraged to go. Financial help is possible if needed.

CommunicationIt is very important that all music families receive and read through the various communications that will be going out about the program. Information will be disseminated in class through handouts, using texts with the Remind app, via email blasts and in various social media announcements.

Remind: All parents and students should sign up to receive text messages about upcoming events, any changes to event times, etc. Please do this now. You do not need to download the app or sign up for any account. Students will sign up with the Remind app in class. To get text reminders about specific ensembles, text the specific code below to the number 81010 to be added to that Remind text list:

Music BoardThe TLHS Performing Arts Program depends on the service of student leaders who fulfill important leadership roles. Officers are selected in the spring to serve the following year. This year’s officers include: Emma McKim, Ben Griffin, Niko Utu, Gracie Curl and William Sun.

Music Booster ClubIt takes a lot of time and effort to run this music program and it would be virtually impossible without help from the parents. It is a way to give back to the school, staff and program for making all of these events happen. In having a child in the music program, you ‘automatically’ become part of the ‘Music Booster Club’. Basically, we ask that every parent tries to help out in some way, sometime throughout the year. You will receive several emails throughout the year that present opportunities to help out and there are plenty of opportunities that can accommodate every schedule. The online registration questionnaire gives you an opportunity to indicate ways in which you might be able to help. In addition, if you are interested in helping with the actual planning of fundraising and other events, please contact Mr. Vevia or Stacy Eidler about joining the TLS Music Booster Club Board. More information about meetings will be sent out shortly after the school year starts.

FundraisingFundraising is the major way the Music Department raises funds for music, equipment, tours and other expenses. Because we want to use this money during the year we are heavy on fundraising in the fall. Please participate in and invite your family, friends and coworkers to as many fundraisers as possible.
