A Message from our Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers .
What a great term! Starting with our Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy writing an excellent letter
to the press to remind them of their responsibilities to present all the schools in a fair light, this
produced interest and follow up from Channel TV and several other organisations. It created much
positive debate with the student body, parents and grandparents.
We had a brilliant year at the Eisteddfod with many of our individual students, choirs, groups and
bands winning their class at the Eisteddfod , details will follow, but I suspect Ms Tennant may
leave out the fact that she won the Silver Baton as the best conductor of the series, well
deserved!
Several KS4 students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the English Department trip to Stratford-upon-
Avon, I was most sad to be left behind.
Our students who have taken part in the Business Challenge have done us proud, we have to wait
till May 19th to find out who goes through to the final 5 groups. Our site manager, Mr Alderton,
was heard to say he could not imagine St Sampson’s without ‘The Two Chocolatiers”.
All this and our teachers delivering ‘very good’ lessons and our students making very good
progress throughout the term. We are a school to proud of!
Yours sincerely
Mrs A Bolt Headteacher
English Department News from Mrs Appelqvist
This term the English department took a group of GCSE students to Stratford-Upon-Avon. During the trip,
students visited Shakespeare’s burial site; attended a workshop with a leading Shakespearean lecturer;
toured Shakespeare’s birthplace and experienced actors reciting some of his most famous sonnets and
monologues in his garden; saw a temporary art exhibition based on Shakespeare’s most famous quotes;
and watched the Royal Shakespeare Company’s adaptation of Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
The English department would like to thank all parents and students who were involved with this trip. We
were so proud of our students, who not only behaved perfectly but represented our school with great
maturity and charisma. All photographs from the trip can be found on the school’s Facebook page.
Our Year 10 students have also continued the school’s successes in the Eisteddfod. Our Year 10 G&T
students each entered a poem, inspired by Charles Dickens’ “Hard Times”. We were incredibly proud when
the group were awarded ten merits (Hannah Jones, Melissa Wilson, Sam Ashcroft, Saskia Bessin, Jacob
Masterton Pipet, Lauren Le Page, Lauren Smeed, Mathew Holland, Giada Borselli, Elaine Lowe) and three
first classes (Brandon Taylor, Leah Terpstra, Sasha Belford). A very well done to all those who contributed!
Year 8 are also excited to be a part of the island’s Victor Hugo celebrations. Mrs. Appelqvist’s class have
been writing poems based on Hugo’s novel, “Toilers of the Sea”, and will be entering these poems as part
of the poetry competition being run by the festival. We have our fingers crossed for further successes.
Eisteddfod – Poetry Writing A number of our Year 10 students into the poetry section; they wrote poems inspired by Charles Dickens’
“Hard Times”. The following was awarded:
First Class:
Brandon Taylor
Leah Terpstra
Sasha Belford
Art Department News It has been a very busy term for the Art department. Year 11 have been industrious in their preparation for
the final examination and have now completed their timed examination piece. It is always a pleasure to see
the creative results of weeks of research and planning. Year 11 still have a little time left to add to their
coursework to ensure their best final grade possible. Year 10 are working well on their own projects, with
some promising coursework developing. KS3 classes are busy on various artistic endeavours and we look
forward to show casing some of their work at the MAD evening, towards the end of the summer term. This
term, we also enjoyed celebrating some individual students’ achievements with a display of work at the
Soloist evening alongside Music and Drama. We now have a date for submission of artwork for this year’s
Sovereign Art Prize. We were very proud of Imogen Conlan who won this prestigious prize last year £500
for herself and £2000 for our Art Department. It would be amazing if we could do this again!. So, Art
students we need artwork for this competition handed in to Mrs Birch by Wed 25 May. The Easter holidays
would be an ideal time to get out sketching and drawing!

Students had to design a new technological way to generate, collect or store energy on the island. They
needed to produce a proposal which included a design of the technology they would utilise. Six students
were entered from year 9. Holly-Anne Langlois, Noah Falla and Sophie Wilcox have been awarded a
certificate as their entry was ‘highly commended’. They designed a new ‘wave energy’ machine that could
be used in the waters surrounding Guernsey.
