FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S/DIRECTOR’S DESK

is with a sense of honor, pride and privilege that I am penning these few words to introduce the world of Ambedkar Institute of Technology a Delhi Government college affiliated to Directorate of Training & Technical Education. Over the past twelve years, we passed many milestones, logged in numerous achievements, created image for delivery of superior students and carved out an image in corporate as well as academic arena for ourselves. All the while, the focus has remained on education preparing capable aspiring young men and women for rewarding careers. Our quest for excellence over the years has built up the state of the art infrastructure and equipment, made more efficient by the most dedicated and experienced members of the faculty. While we endeavor to provide these inputs, students learn a lot more through their own interaction with peers and through actual work experience and I am delighted to say that many of students are live testimony to the devotion, deteination, and diligence that have been the hallmark of the Ambedkar Institute of Technology. I am sure that our students will be assets for any company. I look forward to their bright future.

Coinciding with the above development, it is a matter of pride and satisfaction for me in bringing out this Departmental e-Magazine of the Department of ELECTRONICS – “MEDIX-2017-18” ( MEDICAL & DIGITAL

ELECTRONIX) of AIT portraying an array of activities and achievements during its regime during the year gone-by. I extend my Best Wishes to all the ELECTRONICS Students and the Faculty Members.

DR. (MRS.) AMITA DEV

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESKBoth Education and Training are the strategic elements which would

pave way for employment-enhancing skills and increasing productivity and would, in the long run, accelerate the future economic growth of the country.

The Indian Economy is a knowledge-based economy owing to its copious Human Capital with impeccable qualification, knowledge, capability, Skills, flexibility etc. and these qualities need to be developed further and empower the Human Capital to ensure our country’s Global Competitiveness. Still, there is a dearth of skilled manpower to address the mounting needs and demands of the Global Job-Market. To find a solution to this problem, the Government and Private Sector should untidily take efforts to introduce Educational and Skill Development Programmes to mould and garner the Demographic Dividend.

Hence, it is imperative to nurture the skills of the younger generation as a “Learner First” by the respective Governments in our country for knowledge-intensive sectors. The Government should allocate sufficient funds for the development in all the Plans, Policies and Procedures and provide region-wise Training Programme suiting to their Courses, so that the country would face the challenges of demand and supply of the Global Job Market.

It gives me immense pleasure to edit this Departmental e-Magazine – “MEDIX-2017-18” depicting the performance and various achievements of ELECTRONICS Students during last year. I take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to all the students and teacher fraternity of Department of ELECTRONICS who have evinced keen interest in providing various articles and enable the undersigned to bring this Departmental e-Journal “MEDIX” in an impeccable manner. I wish them All-The-Best!

SWACHH BHARAT CAMPAIGN SUCCESS OR FAILURE?

It seems very pleasant to mind when we think of Mother Earth covered with a green layer, little sparkles of crystal clear water and aroma of peace. It gives us a different type of joy which is way beyond explanation. And isn’t it the way it was born? A sphere which was carved out of a huge ball, later on gave rise to life. While writing the tale of the beautiful origin of the Mother

Earth, the creators didn’t know, the climax of the story would turn out to be deadly. Well, yes if I talk about the deadly climax I mentioned above, I’d like to purely relate it to the picture we have before which is pretty evident to call it – deadly. If I talk about the case of INDIA the situation is not very much different. We see huge heaps of garbage kept here and there. If you stand at a corner of a road, and roll your eyes you can see drops of pieces of dirt which for sure never please neither your soul nor the body. In order to alleviate this ugly picture of Bharat Mata, our honourable Prime Minister , SH. Narendra Damodardas Modi launched the Swachh Bharat campaign on 2nd October. It was meant to teach people the art of

AIT|Page 23

cleanliness. “To keep environment clean and green is our prime duty”, isn’t it a sentence we have heard since long? But do we know what it actually means to implement it in real life? It takes a whole lot of efforts to implement things in real life. When you step in the stinking lanes of India which is partly hidden, you will see wobbly doors that make you enter a different world. In the beginning, I could see a lot of people involving themselves in this initiative. I could also see a lot of celebrities involved, standing with brooms in their hands. I’d like to draw attention towards the news channels who kept on showing these headlines related with this campaign. Now I cannot see much of it, pity. There are still a few people left who deliberately follow this no matter what is the condition. A lot of us treat all places apart from our homes, as a junkyard. As soon as we step out of our homes, we start littering everywhere. Is this what we are up to? Well, ask this to yourself, do you require any campaign to make you feel the need of any kind of campaign? Can’t we realize it on our own? It’s never too late to wake up. Realize on your own. Let’s make India a better place to live in. Willingly pick up any litter piece you find. Paint the places with pleasant colours of peace. Organize your groups supporting cleanliness. Then you won’t need any campaign. If you really want to support anything, do it properly. After all, this is where we’re born, this is where we have to live and this is where we’ll die. Keep India clean!

HEALTHY FOOD PYRAMID

The Food PyramidThe Food Pyramid is designed to make healthy eating easier. Healthy eating is about getting the correct amount of nutrients – protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals you need to maintain good health. Foods that contain the same type of nutrients are grouped together on each of the shelves of the Food Pyramid. This gives you a choice of

AIT|Page 24

different foods from which to choose a healthy diet. Following the Food Pyramid as a guide will help you get the right balance of nutritious foods within your calorie range. Studies show that we take in too many calories from foods and drinks high in fat, sugar and salt, on the top shelf of the Food Pyramid. They provide very little of the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. Limiting these is essential for healthy eating. So in a nutshell, healthy eating involves:

plenty of vegetables, salad and fruit a serving of whole meal cereals and breads, potatoes, pasta and

rice at every meal - go for wholegrain varieties wherever possible some milk, yoghurt and cheese some meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans and nuts a very small amount of fats, spreads and oils and a very small amount or no foods and drinks high in fat, sugar and

salt

SupplementsIf you eat a varied and balanced diet, then there is normally no need to take any food supplements – you’ll get everything you need from your food. The one exception to this is folic acid. All women of child-bearing age who could become pregnant should take a supplement of 400µg (micrograms) folic acid each day. If a woman does become pregnant, she should continue to take the supplement during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy.

Dr. A P J Abdul KalamBharat Ratna Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, generally known as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was the 11th President of India (2002-2007). By profession, he was a scientist and an administrator in India. He worked with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as an aerospace engineer before becoming the President of India. His work on the development of launch vehicle and ballistic missile technology had earned him the name of the 'Missile Man of India'. The Pokhran-II nuclear tests conducted in India in 1998 after the original nuclear test of 1974 saw him in a pivotal political, organisational and technical role.

AIT|Page 26

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was the visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Indore; the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. He was a professor of Aerospace Engineering at the JSS University in Mysore and at the Anna University in Chennai, apart from being an adjunct and visiting faculty at other research and academic institutions in India. He was the honorary fellow of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and the Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology at Thiruvananthapuram.

In his book 'India 2020', he recommended plans to make the nation a fully developed one by the year 2020. His interactions with the student community and his motivational speeches made him quite popular among the youth. In 2011, he launched a mission called 'What Can I Give Movement' aimed at the youth of India, which focused on defeating corruption in the country.

Personal Background

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born in a necessitous and little educated Tamilfamily on 15 October 1931, at Rameswaram district of Tamil Nadu, India. His father, Jainulabdeen, was a boat owner, and his mother, Ashiamma, was a homemaker. He started working at a young age to support his father. He received average grades in school but was seen as a hardworking and bright student with a strong desire to learn things. He used to study for hours, especially mathematics. He completed his schooling from Rameswaram Elementary School. In 1954, he graduated in Physics from St. Joseph's College in Tiruchirappalli, which was then affiliated to the University of Madras. Thereafter, in 1955, he moved to Madras (now Chennai) and joined the Madras Institute of Technology and studied aerospace engineering. His dream was to become a fighter pilot but he was ranked ninth

AIT|Page 27

while the IAF offered only eight slots. He remained a bachelor.

Kalam rose from obscurity through his personal and professional struggles and his work on Agni, Prithvi, Akash, Trishul and Nag missiles became a household name in India and raised the nation's prestige to international reckoning.

Journey and Achievements as a ScientistAfter completing his graduation in 1960, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam joined as a scientist in Defence Research and Development Organisation's Aeronautical Development Establishment.

At the very start of his career, he designed a small helicopter for the Indian army.

He also worked under the renowned scientist Vikram Sarabhai as a part of the committee of INCOSPAR.

From 1963 to 1964, he visited the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the Wallops Flight Facility located at the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the Langley Research Center of NASA situated at Hampton, Virginia.

In 1965, he worked independently in Defence Research and Development Organisation for the first time on an expandable rocket project. The programme was expanded in 1969 and more engineers were included after receiving Government approval.

He became the Project Director of India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) when he was transferred in 1969 to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). In July 1980, his team was successful in deploying the Rohini satellite near the orbit of the Earth.

Dr. Kalam's efforts in developing the projects on SLV-III and Polar SLV from 1970s to 1990s proved to be successful.

Dr. Kalam directed Project Valiant and Project Devil that aimed at developing ballistic missiles using the technology

AIT|Page 28

of the SLV programme that was a success. It is known that the then

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, using her discretionary powers, allotted secret funds when these aerospace projects were disapproved by the Union Cabinet.

Dr. Kalam and Dr. V.S. Arunachalam, on the proposal of the then Defense Minister R. Venkataraman, worked on developing a quiver of missiles instead of one at a time. Dr. Kalam was made the Chief Executive of the programme, which was named Integrated Guided Missile Development programme.

From July 1992 to December 1999 he remained the Secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and also the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister. This period witnessed the Pokhran II nuclear tests, when Dr. Kalam played a key technological and political role. At the time of the testing phase, he, along with R. Chidambaram, was made the Chief Project Coordinator.

He developed a low-cost Coronary Stent along with Dr. Soma Raju, a cardiologist, in 1998. It was named "Kalam-Raju Stent" after them. Both of them also designed a tablet PC called "Kalam-Raju Tablet" for healthcare in rural areas.

Awards and Recognitions The nation honoured Dr Kalam with Bharat Ratna, the

highest civilian award, in 1997 for his contribution in the field of scientific research, development and modernisation of technology in the defence sector of India.

In 1990, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Indian Government for his work with the DRDO and ISRO and as scientific advisor to the Government.

In 1981 he received the Padma Bhushan In 1998, the Government of India presented to him the

Veer Savarkar Award.
