TRANSCRIPT

Open a new word document and save it as “Erosion investigation”. The numbered tasks in bold are the ones you need to write about in the document. If you use any websites other than the ones which are provided, copy and paste the hyperlink and add it to the bottom of your word document.

Task 1 – 10mins

1. Look at the geology map of the Isle of Man. Identify which areas you feel will be most likely to erode and explain why. You might want to find out more about the type of rock… For example are glacial deposits hard or soft? Is limestone hard or soft? Which will be easier to erode and why? (Use google!)

2. Open https://www.gov.im/about-the-government/departments/environment-food-and-agriculture/environment-safety-and-health-directorate/national-strategy-on-sea-defences-flooding-and-coastal-erosion/ and select ‘Kirk Michael’ under ‘Management Areas’.

3. Click ‘open’ on both of these pop-ups.

4. When the folder pops up, open 2015s3607 IoM Overview Map.

5. Use the coloured boxes and the key on the map. Does what this map show agree with the areas you identified to be most at risk? Are there other areas you may identify as being at risk of erosion?

6. Which areas around the Isle of Man are already being managed? (Look at the key).

Task 2 – Kirk Michael (30mins)

Kirk Michael is eroding at a very fast rate. This is going to cause major problems and needs to be addressed as soon as possible to try and manage the issue properly.

1. In the Kirk Michael folder, open the ‘Hotspots’ folder. 2. Open the four hotspots: Hotspot_54; Hotspot_55; Hotspot_56 and Hotspot_57.3. Why do you think the files have been named ‘hotspots’?4. Investigate the different options on the drop-down menu.

5. Which hotspot is going to suffer the most according to the predicted erosion contour (the

area of land which is predicted to be eroded (gone) in 100 years time). Think about different types of land-use (Residential areas? Fields? Roads?)

6. What is the reason for your choice for 5?7. Use this document: https://www.gov.im/media/1351875/national-strategy-evidence-

report-060616.pdf (pages 37, 38 and 43 are good) and write a paragraph which explains why climate change may have an effect on the erosion at Kirk Michael.

8. After researching the problem at Kirk Michael you have been asked to think of an action plan. Use the following link (and any others you find) to come up with your own solution to the problem at Kirk Michael. Say what is good (advantages) and bad (disadvantages) about your choice. Then say why you think yours is the best option!http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks3/geography/physical_processes/coasts/revision/7/
