PARISH NEWSLETTER

4th Sunday of Easter – 22 April 2018

THE PORTRAIT OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

In our first reading, Peter and John face trial. This was not because they broke the Torah law or even challenged it. It was because a crippled man asked for help and was healed by the invocation of the name of Jesus. “In the power of the name of Jesus, that cripple stood perfectly sound” (Acts 4:10). The man stood there before them as evidence of the good work done, yet the Sanhedrin has them on trial!

And, if you still wonder whether the people still question the authority of faith, or the ministry of the Gospel in our time, then remember Archbishop Oscar Romero. He was not put on trial but shot down and died on March 24,1980 in San Salvador. It was for saying public mass in which he preached against tyranny and oppression. In the followers of Jesus then or now, Jesus’ statement is still valid: “I lay down my life for my sheep” (Jn 10:15).

Because of the example of Jesus, St John’s first Epistle motivates us. He writes: “Think of the love that the Father has lavished upon us…” Here, John simply reminds us of what we know – that God loved the world so much that he sent His Son, Jesus... As Jesus, in taking flesh like us, shows us the depth of God’s love, so too his suffering death and resurrection proves to us the height of God’s love for us. Accepting the message of Jesus and living out the faith in him has given us our identity as God’s Children.

Today, we need to realise that what is hostile to God also opposes the way of life of believers in God. John calls it the world, not in the sense of the ordered universe (or kosmos), but the ‘world’ as any human enterprise which sets itself in opposition to the demands of God’s will. Here, we have the worldly world (kosmikos), where any

form of Godlessness enjoys support from our secular authorities. In this world, it’s even risky to do good. Thus, “… if we must answer today for a good deed done...”

The ‘Sanhedrins’ of the contemporary world; the systems of the secular pressure; the ideologies of the agnostic hue: they are still here. The demand to freeze the prophetic edge of the word of God is also real.

With these backgrounds in view, we too, have got a question to face. Should we listen to the voice of the good Shepherd or the songs of the hired men? How about we walk together to listen to the Good Shepherd in the teachings of the Church? That is: Are we taking our time, lest we confuse the human spirit with the Holy Spirit?

Remember that Jesus did not go half way, he went all the way. And, he did not ask ‘how much?’ But gave his all: himself! How about we make the sacrifices which our faith in God demands? That we build on the many things that we can all do well, just from paying more attention to the voice of Jesus?

That husbands and wives trust themselves more and support the integral formation of their children: body, soul and spirit. That the Church accepts the burden of building better relationship with our world, not by seeking to please the world but by breaking open the word of God afresh to the world through the discipline of personal example of all of us – believers?

READINGS: (YEAR B) I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD. Though few shepherds remain in our modern world, the image of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, continues to bring comfort to us. It reminds us that we are not alone. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, watches over us always. He lays down his life for us. He leads us to pasture, to water, to safety. He searches for us when we stray and bandages our wounds. Today, let us listen for the voice of the Good Shepherd.
