Li’l Entrepreneurs ProjectIn this project, you will use you knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web design to create a factitious manufacturing company. You will create a logo, company biography, purchase equipment and materials to make a product(s), calculate profit/loss, make a corporate report and presentation to attract investors.

The work may be done in school and at home, however we will be using Microsoft apps to complete the project. This means that if you do any of the work in a google app you must be able to copy and paste it into the Microsoft equivalent. NOT ALL FUNCTIONS IN MICROSOFT APPS ARE IN GOOGLE APPS. This means if you use things like a header/footer or create a master slide in Microsoft they may disappear in the google app.

Part 1: Company Info – a full page Word Document (font times 12pt and line spacing at 1.5) that includes:

Product Name and description – what the product does and how does it benefit societyBiography of the company – when was the company formed, who is in charge, where is it, why did you go in business, what are you visions of the company in 5 years. (use your imagination, this is a work of fiction)

Product: Spaggle.

Spaggle is an all-purpose polymer that has many industrial uses in both manufacturing and food service. It can be used as a lubricant in settings where flammable oils are not to be used. It is also available as a binding agent in toothpaste and semi-liquid foodstuffs such as pudding, pie fillings, and chewing gum. Spaggle is fully biodegradable in normal landfill conditions and is easily cleaned up in factory machinery. Spaggle is a fraction of the cost of many current products that fulfill the same functions in society, savings that can be passed on to the consumer.

Company Bio: Black Sea Carbon Chemicals

Black Sea Carbon Chemicals has provided industrial and food chemicals since 1946. Located in Trabzon, Turkey, we have built a long tradition of providing quality carbon based chemical products for use in rocket propellant fuel, aerosol propellants, polymers, and food additives for cakes, pies and oil based foodstuffs. The company, founded by the Çoban family in 1939, originally extracted lanolin from lambs wool as they were a family of shepherds dating back to the 12th century. Shepherding goats and sheep in the rocky mountains behind Trabzon, it was Asil Çoban grandfather of the current chairman, who saw the future of chemicals as a way to bring his family into the 20th century. During the war years Asil opened a mine in the mountains and incorporated just after the war. Thus began the rise of Black Sea Carbon which continues to bring quality chemicals to the world today.

Part 2: Company Logo – a JPEG or GIF file of a logo

You will use PowerPoint to create a graphic file (JPEG or GIF) for your company logo. Use the file in all of your printed and digital materials for the duration of the project. The logo must contain minimal text, be graphic and relatively simple. Colorful is always good but not too complicated. You can combine elements of line art and photos from the internet; use the drawing tools in PowerPoint or text boxes.

Part 3: Startup Costs 1 – spreadsheet tracking your spending for startup

You will create a spreadsheet to track your spending for your startup machinery and materials needed to make your product. There are two parts to the spreadsheet. First, a list of equipment you need to buy to build your product. Second, a list of ingredients that your product is made of. See template below:

Be creative in your use of machinery and ingredients. They may be based in real online research or made up but make them convincing. Include about 8-10 pieces of machinery and the same for ingredients. Make up your own costs.

Cost of Goods Sold Ingredients Section

Create formulas in the total cost column using fixed cell references. You should be able to put the quantity you produce in one cell and have the first ingredient multiplied out. You can then copy the formula down for all ingredients.

Then using =sum, create subtotals for the machinery section and ingredients section. Make a grand total using a simple formula to add the two subtotals.

Formatting:

Do the following formatting:Single underline the last cell for the amount in each group Double underline the cell with each subtotal Boldface and double underline the Total Startup Cost.

A great improvement to make a spreadsheet look good is the use of borders. Using the border tool you can create a look that is clean and sharp.

Additionally, your logo should appear on all documents. It can be copy/pasted or inserted using the insert tab on the top.

Part 4: Letter to InvestorsIn order to get the money you need to start your company you will have to ask people to borrow it. Banks and independent investors will not part with their money without a good sales pitch. The next phase of the project is to write a letter to potential investors to convince them to invest in your company. Do this in Microsoft word and include your company logo in the letter.

Include the following:

- What your company makes- Why it is a good product- Who will buy your product (age?, sex?, economic status?, housewives?,

surfboarders?, other manufacturing companies? - Will they have to buy once or repeatedly?- How to you see the product affecting the world?- How will the company grow over the next 5 year?- How much profit can the investor make and when?

The closing paragraph should be an invitation to view a PowerPoint about your company.

Required Jobs

CEO/President –assumes all executive responsibilities including steering the company, dealing with crises, managing all the departments and most of all making sure the company makes a profit.

VP – the vice president assists the CEO in all matters. They are the presidents right hand man. They manage the department managers, screen information and advise the president on the state of the departments and company.

Treasurer – the treasurer keeps track of the financial position of the company including expenditures, borrowing, equity, and profit margin. They look at the short and long term growth and profitability of the company.

Marketing Manager – the marketing manager decides how to move the product. They put the merchandise into the public eye. This includes advertising, package design and branding. They keep track of trends in the industry in order to revise products and remain competitive.

Factory manager – the factory manager oversees production of the company products. This includes receiving materials used in production, actual manufacturing and packaging of the product, storage and shipping the product out. They are also responsible to keep costs down and minimize waste.

R & D Manager – the research and development manager takes care of changes, improvements to products and the development of new product lines. They determine the details of the product and how it is made or will change.

Human resources – the human resources manager is in charge of all issues with the employees of the company. This includes legal requirements for employment, lawsuits, payroll, hiring and firing.
