Try It #1: Finding, Downloading, Storing, Moving Images

1) On your desktop, create a folder named “media-workshop”2) Go to http://commons.wikimedia.org and find an image that is at least 800 pixels wide. (Hint: dimensions are shown as width x height)3) Download this file, or click the chosen dimensions to open the file full screen, then right/ctrl-click on it, and save it to the “media-workshop” folder you just created.4) Jot down the dimensions (W x H), then get the file size (click once on file to select it, then use ⌘-i (Mac) or right-click: Properties (Win).5) Go to http://webfiles.uvm.edu. Login. 6) Click on the Zoofiles-Webpage folder in the left sidebar, then click the “New” icon. Click “Folder” and create a folder named media-workshop.6) Find the folder, click it to open it, then click the “Upload” icon and upload your image file.

Take it further: 1) See if your neighbor can find your image. They should look at http://www.uvm.edu/~your-netid/media-workshop/whatever-you-named-your-image2) Ask your neighbor if you can copy their image. Go to its location (just like they went to yours).3) Download their image (right/ctrl-click, save the image.)

Try It #2: Editing Images

1) Open a new window in your browser, go to picmonkey.com and upload an image.2) Click the Crop tool and do one adjustment.3) Click the Text tool and add some text.4) Click the Effect tool and try one effect.5) Look for this icon to show before and after versions as you edit: 6) Save the picture, name it, choose a quality (and notice the difference in file sizes), save it to your computer.7) Upload this new edited picture file to zoo/media-workshop

Take it further: Sometimes the images you want are not directly available on the web. For example, we may have images embedded in a Word file but do not have access to the original images. How can we get the images out of the file so we can re-use them? Let’s compare two methods:1) Download this file: http://tinyurl.com/hsm8t2p and open it in Word.2) Right/ctrl-click on a picture choose “Save Picture As,” give it a name, save it to the desktop.3) Now try another method: In the Word doc, choose File: Save As and choose to save the document as a web page (.htm).4) Word will save your file as a web page but will also save the images in a separate folder. Find that folder, open an image, and compare them to the size and quality of images saved in step #3. Which is closest to the quality of the original image? What about getting images out of PDF files? Here are some options: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/software-reviews/extract-images-from-pdf-files/

Try It #3: Finding Video: Kanopy1) Go to library.uvm.edu, Articles & More, scroll down to Kanopy.2) If you are off-campus you will asked to login with your NetID and password.3) Use “Browse Subjects” or the Search tool to find a film.4) Click Play button to watch it. Once it starts, click the Expand button to see it full screen. 5) Click the Share/Embed icon to get code you can use to paste a link in PowerPoint or Blackboard or embed the video in Blackboard. (Embed? The video appears right on the Blackboard page.)

Take it further: Extra features in Kanopy1) Some features in Kanopy require that you create an additional account. You can use your UVM email name for this but don’t (don’t ever!) use your UVM password. Create a new password.2) Find a movie, then click “Create Clip/Playlist”3) Type a name for the new playlist in the box and click “Create.”4) The Playlist name will appear above in the Existing Playlist area. There will be an “Add Video” option. Click that to add the video to this playlist.5) There is also an “Edit Playlist” link. Click that to make clips or to find the “Delete Playlist” option.6) To make a clip, click the “Edit” button to the right of your movie in the My Playlist area.7) Enter the start time and end time for the clip, then click “Save Clip.”TIP: If you want to keep the full movie in your Playlist and make some clips from that movie, add the movie to your Playlist, click “Edit Playlist,” then click “Duplicate” to make a copy. Creating a clip keeps only the clip. Ex: Want 5 clips? Make 5 duplicates.TIP: The fastest way to make clips is to scrub through the video and note all the times for where you want a clip to start and where it should end. Jot those down. You can then just enter each set of numbers in each duplicate to make your clips.

Try it #9: Assignments and Resources

1) As you see examples of the Apps or as you try them for yourself, jot down ideas for how you might use them. Would you create materials for your students or might you ask them to do a project using one of these?

Consider the types of work you currently have them do, ways you would “scaffold” these projects so that they can build them in pieces, and ways you would assess them.

We’ll share ideas at the end.
