132 Locust Way

Historical Significance:

Locust Street was a stop on the Broad Gauge Division of the Boston, Winthrop and Shore Railway in 1884. The line represented a merger of three struggling rail lines which ran summer trains serving the developing summer resorts of Winthrop and Revere Beach. Indeed, rail transportation was a key element in making this development possible. A devestating storm in November, 1885 destroyed much of the Broad Gague tracks, and the company never recovered. It was taken over by the Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn line, which laid new narrow gague tracks and opened in 1888 with a station at Winthrop Highlands between Highland and Crest Avenues several blocks away. Locust Way may have been located near the freight spur of the Broad Gague built in 1884. At any rate, this area was, for a short time, a rail nexus, which probably accounts for the collection of Victorian summer cottages located near-by.

National Register Criteria:

Although significant in the development of Winthrop's architecture and history, this little house probably does not meet the standards for nomination to the National Register for individual listing. The area has only a few unaltered examples of Victorian summer cottage architecture, (see photographs) and much later infil of mediocre character.

This 1 1/2 story cottage was probably built for summer use ca. 1884-90. One of two small Queen Anne houses at the end of Locust Way, it appears to be essentially intact. The cross gabled structure has a jerkin head roof and broadly raked eaves. A porch wraps the house at front and side. Additional elaboration is seen in the clapboard ground story and shingled second story and attic interrupted by a patterned shingle band.

A small collection of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival summer cottages here remain in relatively unaltered condition dating from the mid 1880s. This house and its neighbor are among the best \ preserved, many having been altered in conversion to year around occupancy. )
