being. The set of domains represents the range over
which the QOL consept extends and thus define quality of life

What’s Important TO the person:Only what the person tells us with their
words or behavior. When what people say and what they do
is different, we rely on the behavior. This is not what others think should be
important to the person.
What’s important FOR the person:Only the things that help us to be:Healthy and SafeA valued member of the community
![Page 17: Understanding the structure of Quality of Life concepts for individuals (domains and indicators) Understanding how and why to measure Quality of Life](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc81a28abf838ca84fd/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Social indicators generally refer to fixed external or environmentally indicators, based on conditions such as health, social welfare, friendships, standard of living, education, employment rate….Such indicators are good for measuring the
collective quality of community or national life; however they are insufficient to measure an individual’s percerved personal well-being or quality outcomes from rehabilitation programs
‘Campell, Converse and Rogers’ argue that social indicators reflect only an outsider’s judgment of quality as suggested by external, environmentally based conditions.
![Page 18: Understanding the structure of Quality of Life concepts for individuals (domains and indicators) Understanding how and why to measure Quality of Life](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc81a28abf838ca84fd/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Personal indicators focus on the individual and those factors that contribute to what is important to and for the individual person.
Personal indicators are person-defined and valued QOL aspirations
Personal indicators are defined within the context of QOL domains

Systems are designed to improve the quality of the organisation or society, rather than the individual service user
Results are used for comparison between individuals, departments and organisations/communities
The informants are often anonymous The measurement takes place after services are delivered
![Page 23: Understanding the structure of Quality of Life concepts for individuals (domains and indicators) Understanding how and why to measure Quality of Life](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc81a28abf838ca84fd/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)

The individual is the point of reference in personal outcomes, and any comparison should be WITHIN the person and not between individuals
What is of relevance for the service user is the improvement of QOL as he or she defines QOL for him or her self
Measuring QOL is an ongoing process thru the period of service delivery

For your organization the goal might be to get people employed.
To the service user it’s not the job it self, but the benefits from having a job that matter . By focusing on this, service users can find
motivation and strength to make a change in their life.
