MISSION STATEMENTSSTUDENT As students in Science Tech we pride ourselves in being a unique group of

students who come together through collaboration and hands on inquiry and learning. We thrive when we are given high expectations and responsibility and keep open minds. Our goal is to develop better skills and deeper knowledge in science and technology. We strive to make our world a better place through being good people and showing respect for our environment. We are grateful for the many wonderful resources we have in this program!

 

CLASS An environment of inquiry, collaboration, and hands-on exploration guide

the Science/Technology Magnet program at Clark Elementary. In addition to gaining a solid foundation in the district 4th and 5th grade curriculum, students are engaged in ongoing field research in our local stream and forest community, identifying real life environmental problems and creating solutions. Students will experience technology and science first hand and be given opportunities to dig deeper into these fields. Teachers promotes high expectations for all students with an emphasis on team work, leadership, and higher level thinking skills.

HOMEWORK POLICY Planners done each day and need a signature

each day. This is a STUDENT responsibility. Help your child make it a habit to check off each item in the planner.

Typical nightly homework should take around 45 minutes (excluding major projects).

Homework Hotline is 425-837-6267. (This is a student job each day.) This is to hear the nightly homework assignments.

Students may not call parents to bring in late work.

In the homework folder, homework checkers will record any missing work. It needs to be turned in that week.

Work needs to be neat and organized with proper heading.

WORD WORK Curriculum is based on Greek and Latin

roots, prefixes, and suffixes ( feel free to peruse the curriculum on back shelf)

putting the pieces together to make new words, decode, expand vocabulary

Fourth and fifth graders have the same words

HOMEWORK TIPS – INTERESTING ARTICLE IN THE NY TIMES.

Seek your child’s input and help them make the decisions about where and how to do their work in a way that is best for them (with parameters).

Tell them you trust them to stay on track and check-in to make sure they are following the plan.

Help them with strategies to solve problems when they are stuck. (Tools like dictionaries, ruler, sharp pencils, online, etc.)

Support your child in their decisions, but clearly establish consequences when they do not follow through. Don’t engage in the battle!

Establishing routines quickly is very helpful. CONSISTENCY! This does not happen over

night.

TROUBLE SHOOTING…. Here are some other things to try when your

child is still struggling with homework: Do it in the morning when they are fresh Offer fewer choices Homework Play-date or Homework Club Model (read together, pay bills while they do

math) Front load the work (spelling on a calmer day) Incentives Stay in close proximity Vary homework location (KCLS) Try ‘chunking’ (breaking up the different

assignments into smaller time increments) Half-hour of time to stay up later IF they read in

bed. Shut it down…try again tomorrow! Send us a

note and we will help!

TECHNOLOGY TIPS To keep kids safe on the internet, keep all

computers in a public place in the home. Limit time screen time (T.V., video games,

and computer) – if a constant battle, limit to weekends only.

Limit and monitor your child’s social networking. Online bullying is becoming a prevalent issue in our society.

We do not ‘friend’ students or families on Facebook or other sites.

We value and respect the families in our classroom, and do not publicize any information or opinions about our students or their families. We’d appreciate the same courtesy from you.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS IN THE PROGRAM: Get plenty of sleep, tired students have a

hard time concentrating and retaining information. Studies have shown children need 9-11 hours of nightly sleep!

Have students check off homework in planner AS they place it into work into homework folder.

Pack backpacks the night before, things get forgotten in the shuffle in the morning.

Use rubrics to ensure students have included all info for projects.

Have students be accountable for their work, questions, and concerns…you are off the hook!
