Assignments

this term More AUTAL work to prepare for PWL

exam in Summer Term All assignments to be handed in on

Fronter – no extensions of deadlines

Lesson Objectives

Environmental Issues To learn about environmental issues

that are facing us in this century

Lesson Outcomes

To be able to list the 3 main environmental issues

To be able to say a little bit about each one, describing how they affect individuals

Starter

Think of 6 environmental issues that you have heard of

Rank the 6 issues you have written down in order of importance, putting the one that you think is the greatest threat to human life at the top

Now, neatly write the title Environmental Issues and write one paragraph to justify your decisions, say which one you put at the top and why

Why are these environmental problems happening now?

There are 3 main reasons: Population growth Developments in science and

technology Growing world demand for food and

material goods

Population Growth

Population Growth clip In 1800 the world population was about

800 million In 2000 the world population was 6

billion – eight times larger! Over 75 million more people are added

to the world population each year By 2050 the world population is

expected to be 9 billion

Population Growth

Draw the graph

Describe why population growth is such a big issue

Describe three ways in which the natural environment will have been changed by this increase in population

Developments in science and technology

Draw and label five examples of technology that we did not have 200 years ago

Then, take three of your examples and explain how these make use of natural resources

Growing world demand for food and material goods

Global supply and demand People want more material things MEDC’s have become much richer and

LEDC’s want the same lifestyle

Things we want

Materials needed Resources used

Car Steel, rubber, plastic, glass, leather, petrol

Iron ore, oil, sand, animal skin, chemicals

Global Supply and Demand

1. Explain what we mean by the title2. What are the down-sides of this

increased demand for food and material goods? (Think of growth of countries, manufacturing in US etc)

3. What are the positives of the increased demand for food and material goods? (think of farmers, consumers etc)

A growth in the demand for food and material goods

In today’s world, people tend to want more things and more food. This growth in demand has pros and cons. + farmers can grow more+ countries that manufacture things cheaply prosper-Further use of natural resources-Countries where it costs more to manufacture things, lose their industry and people lose their jobs

Lesson Outcomes

To be able to list the 3 main environmental issues

To be able to say a little bit about each one, describing how they effect individuals

Plenary

What are the three main environmental issues at the moment?

Could you say a bit about each one?
