OVER $42 000 raised by you—our brilliant, extraordinary GK Community

What an amazing effort by these wonderful ladies and the PFA Sunday was a day that was filled with excitement and community spirit. GK was buzzing and the amount of volunteer help was something to be extremely grateful for, especially when aligned to our grand total of over $42 000. The generosity shown by our families and friends is not really surprising however it is something to acknowledge and celebrate as there are many other communities not as fortunate. Thank you to every single person who did one thing or many in bringing this together. The core team of Carol Kovacic, Sharon Murphy, Kate Arnot, Rachael Best, Fiona Davies and Helen Giannakos (not pictured) poured blood, sweat and tears into bringing this day together over the past six months or more. Hours and hours of work has been dedicated to the success of the fete and I would like to thank them on behalf of our entire community, as I know this is the sentiment of all. Many people have assisted greatly throughout, too many to mention here for fear of leaving people out, however you need to know your effort is greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank Fiona and Helen especially, as this will be their last fete at GK after many years of organisation on the PFA Team.

We will share with you next term where this money will be targeted as we are in the process of giving decision making over to the kids. All of this money will benefit the children directly, with this year’s focus looking at developing creative play zones out in the yard. Thank you is really not enough.

Parent Teacher Interviews Thank you to all our families for visiting over the last two weeks. Our teachers have appreciated the time to meet and discuss your child’s learning and look forward to continuing to communicate the successes and needs of your children as the year progresses. If for any reason you still have areas of need you wish to discuss further, I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher to make another time with them.

The annual GK Fun Run was held on Wednesday 28th March in and around the school grounds. The GK Fun Run is a terrific

community event where all students get the chance to represent their house – either RED( GREVILLEA), ACACIA( YEL-

LOW), GREEN( CORREA), BLUE(EUCALYPT)= the house names represent our native shrubs/ trees in the area.

What was most noticeable was the terrific efforts, sportsmanship and spirit of the students that participated from prep

through to grade 6. Also noticeable was how well prepared most students were for their events and credit must go to class

teachers who have been training the students for the past 5 weeks. This training not only prepared the students but helped

improve their fitness levels and understanding of the importance of fitness for general health and well being.

Thank you to the parents who put their hand up to help out as course marshalls and the staff who helped set up the course,

prepare the students and act as course marshalls on the day.

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

From the Fun Run a training squad of students from gr 3-6 have been selected for the District cross country in term 2.

Training will be held at the school on Tuesday and Thursday MORNINGS IN Term 2. at 8am.

The overall winner of the House team award was Grevillea ( red ) house for the 3rd consecutive year.

School Crossing Update

A0er consulta1on between the School and Banyule Council, as of the start of Term 2 the crossing

supervision 1me will be more in line with student and parent needs to ensure child safety.

Both of our crossings (the Crossing near Liddesdale Grove and also the Highland Court Crossing)

will now be covered a li;le earlier in the mornings from 8.05am un1l 8.50am (instead of 8.15am

to 9am) and will remain the same in the a0ernoon.

We hope this slight change allows families arriving earlier to be now covered by a Crossing

Supervisor.

Defini1on of bullying The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says:

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or so-

cial behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group

misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be

obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including by-

standers.

Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as

• mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance - power imbal-

ance is a situation where one person or group has a significant advantage over another

that enables them to coerce or mistreat another for their own ends)

• not liking someone or a single act of social rejection

• one-off acts of meanness or spite

• Isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

School holidays are the perfect time to check and treat your child for head lice. Head lice notifications have been on the in-

crease this term and we would actively like to reduce this. Could you please take a moment over the holidays to check your

child's hair and commence appropriate treatment where necessary? This may need to be repeated numerous times to remove

all the stages of lice.

At the beginning of term 2, all grades will be checked. Students found to have head lice will need to be collected and treatment

commenced before being returned to school. Class notices will then be sent to families notifying of head lice found in that

grade.

Unfortunately head lice is an ongoing issue in all schools, so regular home checks and treatment is crucial to minimise out-

breaks. If you have any queries regarding our Head Lice policy please do not hesitate to contact me. Further information-regarding treatment of head lice can also be found at ww.health.vic.gov.au/headlice.

KITCHEN GARDEN NEWS

Our last rotation in the Kitchen for Term 1 focused on the topic “Children Around The World”, which the 3/4

grades are discussing in their integrated curriculum. Our menu was :-

Flatbread....Greece Dhal............. Sri Lanka Aromatic rice.....Malaysia

Raita...........India Apple Fritters....France

We all enjoyed preparing our own pastry and watching it transform into yummy flatbread. The wonderful

smell of cooking with aromatic spices of cumin, coriander, garam masala, cinnamon sticks, ginger and garlic

wafted throughout GK. Keeping with tradition, we experienced eating with our fingers. Learning the art of

scooping, balling, mixing the dishes together and hoping most made it to our mouths was a lot of fun. It’s

fantastic seeing EVERYONE wake up their tastebuds and try new textures and flavours.

We’ve also engaged in the discussion of how important it is to keep our bodies hydrated. I’m sure there’s

been some interesting chats at home about how we can tell if we are getting enough water into our bodies for

them to function at their best.

Well done 3/4’s, it’s a pleasure cooking with you. Shaz

Year ¾ students have been learning about soil preparation in readiness for planting and have been busy

removing weeds, rocks and clearing existing trees in the garden beds. The veggie plots are well fertilized

with students adding nutrients such as blood and bone and cow manure (much to their dismay!) Students

have also been working in the greenhouse planting a variety of seeds in seed trays and pots. They have

learnt about seed germination and will transfer these seedlings into the garden beds.

A massive thank you to all parents who attended the recent working bee and assisted with various jobs in

the vegetable garden. Enjoy the Easter holiday break and stay safe. Sandra Portaro J

Poppies EASY KNITTED POPPY

Size 3.5 mm kniJng needles

Col A 1 ball red 8 ply yarn (one ball will make many poppies)

Col B Scrap of green 8 ply yarn

Col C Scrap of black 8 ply yarn

Body of Poppy

Using Col A cast on 120 s1tches.

Rows 1-4 Knit

Row 5 Knit 3 together across the row (40 s1ches)

Rows 6-9 Knit

Row 10 Knit 2 tog across the row (20 s1tches)

Rows 11-14 Knit

Row 15 Knit 2 together across the row (10 s1tches)

Cut yarn leaving a tail of about 20cm

Thread tail through yarn needle and slip all the remaining live s1tches onto the yarn tail and pull 1ght. Pull

around into a circle and then ma;ress s1tch seam for an invisible seam. Sew in ends.

Centre of Poppy

Using Col B Cast on 8 s1tches and knit a square (approx 8-10 rows) of stocking s1tch. Cut yarn leaving a tail and

thread through s1tches as previously. The purl side is the right side. Run a line of running s1tch around the out-

side of the kni;ed square and ease enough to pull the edges of the square into a round and tuck under. S1tch

tucked side down to centre of poppy and overs1tch with black yarn as shown in photograph above.

Alterna1vely .... use a black or green bu;on with 4 holes and sew to centre of poppy.

ANZAC DAY and REMEMRANCE DAY family help

I have been busy knitting poppies to create a poppy display for our upcoming ANZAC Ceremony

which we will hold on Tuesday 24th April (the second week back next term). THANK YOU to

ALEXA P for bringing in some more poppies this week. Knitting is a great ‘mindfulness’

task and could become your ‘nail it’ challenge from now until then.

I have provided the knitting pattern and I have done 11 poppies. I plan to have some ‘mindful’

knitting time on the holidays to increase the collection.

If every child in our school got 1 poppy knitted, either by a parent, family member or even by them

we would have over 600 poppies to put on display for ANZAC DAY! How spectacular.

So the challenge is on. Have a go yourself kids (with some help)—a few holes here and there won’t

hurt, it is the love, respect and pride that goes into each that is most important.

As you knit, hand your poppy into the office and I’ll give an update tally at each assembly until the

ANZAC week. Have fun!

CANTEEN

QKR order cut off is at 8.20am each day

HANDY HINT: If you have a problem with your lunch order, either on QKR or the old fashioned way, please ring after 9am so we have the time to help you.

FIRSTLY I would like to send a BIG THANK YOU to Christine McFarlane and Kellie Wishart for doing a stellar job looking after the can-teen in my absence. Knocked it out of the park ladies!!!

Thank you also for the great job the ladies did running the GK Takeaway from the Canteen on Fete Day. Someone has left their So-dastream Bottle which I would like to return if possible. It can be collected from the canteen or I can send it home with your child.

TERM 2 – With the coming cooler months our Salad Boxes and Sunshine Jellies will not be available – we will have them back in Term 4 when the weather is on the improve.

We have been concerned with the amount of children bringing larger notes ($20+) to spend at the canteen. Due to most of our orders coming through on QKR, we may not have the change available as we did in the old days. As we try and curtail the spending of all the money at once, we then have the problem that the change may be lost whilst the children play.

ROSTER: We have spaces available on the following days if you are free to help. It is once a month unless you’d like to do more 9am to 11.45am –

3rd & 4th Tuesday; 2nd & 4th Wednesday and 1st, 2nd & 3rd Thursday. With the looming colder months, we can use a backup of Emer-gency Names to help out if someone is unavailable due to illness, especially on Fridays.

I can be contacted in the canteen Tues to Thurs 8.30am to 1.30pm or Fri 11.30am to 1.30pm.

The Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) has commenced for 2018. Registra1on forms have been sent home with all students, com-

plete with instruc1ons and passwords. The PRC is not compulsory. To complete the challenge students in Prep-Grade 2 are required to read 30

books with family (20 or more from the challenge list) and students in Grades 3-6 are required to read 15 books (10 or more from the challenge

list). The PRC closes 7 September so there is plenty of 1me to complete the reading requirements. Successful students will have their name

published on the honour roll on the PRC website and will be issue with a comple1on cer1ficate in term 4.
