Formative Assessment for Michigan Educators

(FAME)

Kent ISDApril 15, 2011

What is FAME?

The Michigan Department of Education and Measured Progress are in the third year (2010-11) of providing professional development for formative assessment coaches and their learning teams.

Since our first year, we have had the participation of approximately

100 coaches and nearly 900 educators as a part of learning teams.

Why is FAME important?

The Formative Assessment Process offers educators meaningful opportunities to explore classroom instructional practices and to provide intentional feedback to our students to increase learning.

Formative and summative assessments are interconnected. They provide different levels of information on student learning at different points in time.

Adapted from Ministry of Education Wellington, New Zealand

Assessment in Support of Learning

…it goes beyond merely providing judgments about student performance to providing rich descriptions of student performance
