Friends of the Library Receive Grant to Make the Library More Accessible

EVENT: Bountiful Boulevards Thursday, July 21, 7:00pm - 8:30pm Lynn Valley Main Library

Gardening on boulevards is a great way to promote local food security, community, biodiversity, education and fun. Learn how to create a bountiful harvest of locally grown food and flowers at this free presentation held at Lynn Valley Main Library.

Heather Schamehorn, a certified landscape designer and consultant, will talk about how you can use the vacant grassy areas of municipal land that is between the sidewalk and the property line.

North Vancouver District Public Library (NVDPL) will be made more accessible to people with disabilities thanks to a $73,353 grant that the Friends of the North Vancouver District Public Library has received from the Government of Canada.

The grant comes from the Small Project Component of the Government of Canada Enabling Accessibility Fund. It will go toward accessibility improvements to all three NVDPL branches, and towards the purchase of library materials in formats that are accessible for people with disabilities.

Specifically, the grant will be used to purchase automatic door openers for public washrooms, an accessible self-checkout station, mp3 players, cassette players and Kindles for loan to Library patrons with disabilities, additional mp3 content, magnification viewers, and large touch-screen computer monitors for specific workstations within the branches.

Construction work related to the project is scheduled to take place this summer and fall. All project work is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2011.

North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton presents Friends of the Library Executive Chair Meghan Radomske with a cheque for $73,353.

EVENTS AND PROGRAMS

All BranchesSummer Reading Club for Kids

Kids are invited to “Savour each word” this summer with the 2011 Summer Reading Club — a program that rewards kids for reading!

To participate, kids sign up at their local branch to register and receive a reading record. Then, they write down the titles of the books they read in the reading

record, and track each day that they read for at least 15 minutes (or longer!). For every seven days of reading, kids receive a sticker and a small prize. Children who read for 50 days between June 13 and the end of August can chose either an RBC summer reading club medal or a new paperback book as a prize. Paperback book prizes are generously supplied by a donation from our Friends of the Library.

Summer Reading Club for TeensFor teens going into Grade 8 or above, we have an online Teen Reading Club. Visit www.teensrc.ca to find out more.
