TM HREE years ago the first issue of Stars

of Avon was published. In that issue, there were listed 4,277 Representatives who had earned Jewelled-Pin Awards

during the first three months of 1955.

By 1956 the tremendous growth in Jewelled-Pin performance compelled us to publish the Stars of Avon in six editions—one for each Branch.

Now, reporting those who have earned Jewelled-Pin Awards during the first three months of 1958, our list has grown to more than 10,000. And even more important, our staff of Jewelled-Pin Repre

sentatives has grown from less than 10,000, when the first issue of Stars of Avon was published, to more than 40,000 today!

Over the past three years we have been able to picture close to 3,000 Jewelled-Pin Representatives. We've edited their success stories, their hints and suggestions. (After all, Avon Representatives are pretty generous women and are anxious to share their secrets.) We've tried to give a good report on the activities of top sales organizations across the country. And we have made an attempt to offer "thought starters" that might encourage all Representatives to Jewelled-Pin performance.

FOUR YEAR PERIOD

Page 3: Корпоративный журнал Stars of Avon, 1958

Every day of the year

1 2 5 Representatives earn

Jewelled-Pin Awards and

Bonds for their Future

To us, the most gratifying thing is that these featured Representatives come from every organization in the country. At least once, in this edition or during the past year, every City, every District and every Area has had a Representative featured in the Stars of Avon. This proves what we suspected : Opportunity with Avon is everywhere. It is in your City, in your District, in your Area.

There are, as you know, a good many Jewelled-Pin Representatives in your own organization. But above and beyond that, there is at least one of your neighboring Representatives, one you may even know, who is so outstanding that she merits the special attention of having her picture in Stars of Avon.

As you read through the rest of this magazine, you'll see once again that there isn't any one method or locale that insures success . . . that success is where you find it and that women everywhere, in their own way, have recognized the earning opportunity that Avon offers and have applied themselves the best way they know how to get full value from this opportunity.

Next time you visit a strange town, think of all those unfamiliar houses as being part of another Representative's territory. Think of all the Avon activity that goes on there during the same time that you're working in your territory. Pick out, in your mind, the houses that like the same wonderful Avon products that your customers buy. You'll find yourself wondering whether or not your business is better than this unknown Representative's. And, chances are, you'll find yourself working a little harder against this unknown competition the next day as you make your calls in your own territory. One more reason for playing this so-called "game," is that it will help you understand the bigness, the unity and the intricacy of the Avon operation that is spread across this great country.

We're proud to have good reasons to publish Stars of Avon. We're thrilled that you have found value in it. We're delighted that you vie for a position among the Stars of Avon. We trust that you will continue to take confidence from the successes of Jewelled-Pin Representatives in your neighborhood. And we beg you to accept the challenge of the Avon opportunity and then to enjoy the many rewards of top Jewelled-Pin performance.

A here are as many reasons for being

successful as there are success stories.

Quite often the same fundamental rea

sons are cited as Representatives gather

to tell their own individual successful-

sales-formulas. As you read these quotes,

you'll realize that there's nothing star

tling about them, in fact some of the

thoughts may work even more effectively

for you. Read this as a check list to see

how you "measure up" with the Stars.

Mrs. Louise Sticco, from Connecticut,

says that she seldom misses a sales meet

ing, always feels relieved of her prob

lems and refreshed in her work.

MRS. PERVENA ARCARO Dist. 437, Dela.

MRS. JULIE REPKA

Dist. 343, Conn.

Mrs. Helen Potter from Washington

says: "I always buy the demonstration

items." Averaging better than two Jew

elled-Pin Awards a year since her

appointment three years ago proves

what she says: "It pays to show."

Friendly, regular and dependable

service is the main reason for the success

of many Representatives. Mrs. Denton

Thomas from Pennsylvania (pictured

on front cover) is one of the many who

believes that organizing her time and

working a definite schedule can account

for great success.

the perfect way to convince the skeptical

Setting a goal for new customers every campaign helps spur Mrs. Nellie Parker from Virginia.

Studying the Outlooks and other promotional material along with the encouragement and direction offered by the Managers has helped many a Representative to multiple Jewelled-Pin achievement.

Do you remember the day you

became an Avon Representative?

Do you remember that your Man

ager asked you why you wanted to

sell Avon? Do you remember what

your answer was? Did you say that

you had some bills that just had to

be paid or did you tell her about

your project—new furniture for the

living room or a college education

for your children?

At any rate, as you learned the

details that make up the Avon

opportunity, do you remember

thinking: "This is what I've been

looking for. I should be very suc

cessful at this."

Most Representatives feel this

way when they start selling Avon

and fortunately a good many do suc

ceed as this publication proves.

Some have set and attained many

goals. Mrs. Eve Goralczyk of NeW

Jersey began selling Avon to pay

for braces for her daughter's teeth.

Now, after four years, she has

accomplished this and with the earn-

ings from close to three Jewelled-Pin Awards each year, has been able to buy many things for her family and home.

The first goal of Mrs. Grace Cox from Ohio, who began selling Avon last November, was "to help make our Christmas merrier." Winning a Jewelled Pin within six months indicates how well she succeeded in reaching her goal.

To others, each Jewelled-Pin Award is another step towards a big goal. Being pictured in this edi

tion will be the fulfillment of a goal for still more Avon Representatives.

Where do you fit into this picture? Do you remember your original goal? Have you achieved it? If not, don't dare lose sight of it and don't be satisfied until that goal is yours. If your first goal has been reached or is within your grasp, set a new goal for yourself.

J.f you've been complacent .about your Avon work and haven't as yet known the pleasure of wearing a Jewelled Pin, you'll be interested in this remark I recently overheard.

A certain Representative said: "Each Jewelled Pin makes me work harder for the next one." The remark by itself is not unusual, every Star Representative voices this feeling. The unusual thing is

that this particular Representative had been selling Avon for seven years before she won her first Award and since then has won three within a year and a half.

Why she waited so long or what made her decide to put forth the additional effort is not the theme for this page. But, rather, the remarkable change in her attitude concerning her Avon opportunity.

Before she won her Pin, she thought Avon was a wonderful product, she liked talking about it to her friends and was pleased when they asked her to order something for them. When she particu-

larly approved of the Specials or during

a contest campaign, she would ask

almost all of her regular customers to

look through the Brochure. She was

proud of the fact that she hardly ever

missed a campaign even when she mailed

just a small order. And she would readily

admit that it was nice to always have the

few extra dollars on hand.

Then it happened. She won her first

Jewelled Pin. Her achievement was

announced at the next Sales Meeting

and she suddenly felt a new and closer

relationship with the other Jewelled-Pin

winners whom she had known for years.

New Representatives seemed to look at

her in a special way and the sense of

pride that filled her when her Manager

said, "Congratulations," was the most

wonderful thing of all.

We have a feeling that what really

happened was that finally this Repre

sentative, who had joined Avon to earn

extra money, experienced the delight of

belonging to the big and wonderful

organization that is Avon.

Best of all is that this feeling is here

for everyone. If you're going to sell

Avon, do it in a big way. It's so much

more fun, and lots more rewarding.

D o you agree

Folks just aren't satisfied these days unless they're getting fringe benefits with every purchase and endeavor.

Avon Representatives will nod their heads in agreement with this, for who can deny that a Representative earns more than "cold cash" when she sells Avon!

Perhaps the greatest of these fringe benefits is that described by Mrs. Ruby Nielson from Utah: "The wonderful people I've met and the friends I've made, make selling Avon the most enjoyable work I know of anywhere."

"The prizes and bonds are like getting paid twice," says Mrs. Evelyn Cain from North Carolina.

"The outside interest which has bolstered my morale, injected new spirit into my life and banished the 'household

Page 11: Корпоративный журнал Stars of Avon, 1958

blues,' has given my family reason for renewed pride in me which makes me a much happier person," summarizes the feelings of almost every Representative pictured in this issue.

There's no doubt that the enthusiasm and lift that a Representative feels from her improved knowledge of cosmetics as Well as the pleasure received from serving her customers is a fringe benefit that has almost as much value as the commissions earned.

Avon didn't invent the fringe benefit, but Avon has certainly given it prestige. Ask any Representative. The amazing thing is that every Representative feels these things in some measure. Do those who head the sales-volume parade enjoy the feeling in larger measure? Yes they do! Try selling more and see for yourself.

TPT XXave you noticed how many Repre

sentatives across the country have

received three or five or more Jewelled-

Pin Awards a year? If you've wondered

how they do it, perhaps reviewing a few

of the basics will help you to develop a

plan whereby you'll be able to do the

same.

You know that every campaign in

which you sell $100 at customer price,

you are working at a Jewelled-Pin pace.

$100 represents service to approxi

mately 33 customers at $3.00 a sale or

about 11 customers a week. In a terri

tory of 300 homes, this means serving

only one out of ten of the potential

customers.

Some time ago we learned that the

average family of four spends over $60

a year on cosmetics and toiletries. This

is true whether they live in the heart of

New York City or in a small, isolated

village. No longer are these products

thought of as luxuries. Furthermore,

the number of daily-need items will fluc

tuate with different people, that's why

the $60 may seem like a low figure to

you.

If we can agree that this is a true and

logical analysis, then we can further

realize that $60 multiplied by the cus

tomers in each territory means a sales

potential of several thousand dollars.

After all, the people in our territories

are the ones who are doing all this

purchasing.

Naturally we know that you can't sell

every customer in your territory. BUT

don't forget, Avon is the acknowledged

leader in the cosmetic industry and this

gives you a decided advantage as you go

"calling."

So, work out a plan (your Manager

will help you); be sure it's not any less

than 33 customers a campaign. Just

make up your mind that it will be you

who will supply the cosmetic needs of

your territory, and you will probably

set a new speed record for winning a

Jewelled Pin.

Raymond A. Hulsey General Manager New York Branch

Last December I said in the Stars of Avon that 1958 looked good to me. Now, before me, I have the report of your successes for the first three months, and it certainly bears out my optimism.

The winter's snows and bad weather . . . and the general business recession we hear so much about . . . did not slow the achievement of Avon Representatives.

During January, February and March of this year, a total of 958 Representatives in the New York Branch earned Jewelled-Pin Awards and $50 Bonds! This is over 30% more than in the first three months of 1957! And nearly one-third of these Awards were to new Jewelled-Pin Representatives.

We are very proud of the Representatives who helped to make this wonderful record. They are listed on the following pages. To all listed we send our sincere congratulations for their accomplishments and wish them continued success and happiness in their Avon work.

And with such a splendid start, we know that before the year is out, many thousands of other Representatives will join them to make 1958 a truly wonderful year of achievement for the New York Branch.

In the weeks just ahead there will be many extra helps to Representatives. Your new Avon Catalog is certain to have a wonderful effect in broadening customers' interest in the complete Avon line. New products, new packaging, new shades, new specials . . . new merchandising helps will pave the way to greater sales. An exciting new summertime prize program will provide extra incentive for customer calls. And before you know it, the Christmas Gift Selling Season . . . that wonderful double-up period in Avon activities . . . will be boosting your sales and profits.

If you have not already done so, determine now that you will join the large and growing staff of Jewelled-Pin Representatives. If you have set your heart on a Jewelled Pin and Bond, take fresh courage from the achievements reported on the following pages.

These pictures were taken after one of the heavy storms which blanketed the East with snow last winter. Mrs. J. D. Kelley of District 350, New York, sent them to us on March 13. On the back of each snapshot, she wrote a little note which we reproduce as explanation of each picture.

In her letter, Mrs. Kelley said, "I am sending you some pictures to show you what elements some of us had to work under the last two campaigns. This has been the worst winter in my six years

of Avon selling. We are still fighting drifts here. Thank goodness, Spring is just around the corner."

All over the East similar conditions hampered Representatives. As a postman said to an Avon Representative he met in the Camden, N. J. area, "You and I are the only two people working today." In spite of the handicap, Avon Representatives continued to service their customers and earn Jewelled-Pin Awards. Every Repre

sentative on these two pages faced just such conditions this past winter and still earned a Jewelled-Pin Award.

We think the Representatives who worked and succeeded under such trying conditions deserve special commendation for their achievements. And now, with the blessing of better weather conditions, we hope they will reap the rewards of faithful service. May their example be an inspiration and a challenge to all of us.

. . . especially when it comes to talking about Avon merchandise.

We've checked and one of the major differences between a Star Representative and one who has not as yet earned a Jewelled Pin is the variation in the amount of their product knowledge and useage.

One time a Representative told us about an experience she had had. It went something like this: A customer ordered a product that this Representative had never sold before. The customer seemed to know all about it even though the Representative knew only what she then read in the Catalog. Nonetheless, the customer ordered it, but when it was delivered, she was unable to pay for it so the Representative took it home and there it stayed waiting for the customer to say that she wanted it. Some time later, the Representative came upon it and decided to try it.

Well, she was so pleased by what this product did for her and so surprised to have discovered it, that she took it with her and showed it to all her customers telling them, not that she had just learned about this product, but rather how wonderful a product it was. The result was that she sold one to every customer she spoke to that day.

This was the most encouraging thing that had happened to this Representative in weeks.

More important is what has happened since: Every campaign since that date, this Representative has ordered for herself, in addition to the Demonstration Offer, at least one product from the Catalog that she was not completely familiar with. She has multiplied her sales many times and has won many Jewelled-Pin Awards.

There are over 170 products in the Avon line. How many do you know and use? How many do you sell regularly?

Here it is near the middle of 1958! A good time to look back a little, but a better time to look ahead . . . especially at Avon. Many wonderful things have taken place in the past six months . . . many dreams have come true. Many hearts have been lightened with financial help. Many lives have been inspired to conquer new fields. Many goals have been reached, even surpassed. It truly has been a fruitful half year for Avon Representatives and for Avon.

flowing with profitable opportunities for EVERY Representative.

Coming very soon is Avon's annual Summertime prize program . . . 3 campaigns filled with golden opportunity . . . with its galaxy of inviting and tempting prizes. A big step forward toward that Jewelled-Pin Award and Bond. And the best part about Avon contests is that EVERYONE CAN WIN.

About this time last year, many Representatives set a goal for themselves . . . WIN A BOND BY CHRISTMAS. So very many of them not only earned that one Bond but two. three, four and even five. A magnificent record was established and one we can all look to with pride and enthusiasm. And in addition, I think there is no other stimulation as potent as that which comes from watching our friends and neighbors succeed.

Now, how about the coming six months? How about making some resolutions and promises to yourself? These coming days are filled to over-

And then, before you know it, the most wonderful season of all at Avon . . . CHRISTMAS. Never in the entire Avon year do Representatives have the merchandise, the values, the promotional aids and, as a result, the opportunity to forge ahead and wind up the year with success.

Never is there a better time for EVERY REPRESENTATIVE to promise herself a Jewelled-Pin. So take a moment . . . right now.

Make this promise to yourself: "I WILL have a Jewelled-Pin Award and a Bond for Christmas."
