Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff & Students, St John’s School and Community Kindergarten Silkwood held our combined Open Morning on Tuesday. Parents interested in enrolling their children had the opportunity to attend the school and kindergarten for the morning to experience our “One Stop Learning” at the kindy and school. In addition, students across all years transitioned to their 2015 classrooms for the morning session. I am grateful to the current parents who took time out of their busy lives to facilitate the parent session. Sadly, we farewelled Ann Strasberger last term after 35 years of service to St John’s. Ann commenced her involvement at St John’s as a parent which morphed into various school officer roles and finally to cleaning in more recent times. A farewell morning tea to acknowledge Ann’s contribution to St John’s has been organised for Tuesday 4th November. The cleaning position will be advertised later in the term in preparation for 2015. Meanwhile Mrs. Norelyn Nielsen continues to fulfil the duties to a very high standard. St John’s has been invited to register as a Reef Guardian School, an initiative of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA). This is a voluntary stewardship program made up of schools, councils, fishers, farmers and graziers and is proving that by working together today we can all contribute to a healthier reef for tomorrow. The Reef Guardians program was launched in schools in 2003 as a vehicle for behaviour change to encourage communities to take action for a healthier reef. Today there are more than 300 schools and over 126,000 students in Queensland engaged through the Reef Guardian Schools program. Reef Guardian Schools is a whole of school program involving students, teachers and the school community actively participating across five key areas; Curriculum, Reducing your carbon footprint, On-Ground projects, Educating the community and Community Partnerships. Congratulations to our Year 4-7 students who participated with terrific sportpersonship at last Friday’s Kanga Cricket. Parents are advised that we will not publish a newsletter next week due to the Year 4-7 camp. In addition, we will not have a school assembly next week. Intensive Swimming This year all St John’s students will participate in two weeks of intensive swimming instruction at the Kurrimine Beach Holiday Park. Teachers will instruct small groups of students. We are also seeking volunteer parents to act as instructors and/or lookouts during our swimming sessions, to ensure that children are safe. There will be two swimming groups: Years 4 -7 and P–3, with lessons commencing at 1:30pm each day and concluding at 2:30pm. The timetable is as follows:

School Week 7 Prep/1 and Years 2/3 - Mon 17th & Wed 19th Nov. Years 4/5 and Years 6/7 - Tue 18th & Thu 20th Nov.

School Week 8 Prep/1 and Years 2/3 - Mon 24th & Wed 26h Nov. Years 4/5 and Years 6/7 - Tue 25th & Thu 27th Nov. The school swimming carnival will be held on Friday 28th November. The carnival will commence at 9:00am and conclude at approximately 2pm. The cost of this year’s intensive swimming program is $14 per child, which will cover the cost of transport. This year this cost has been added to the term 4 school fees and levies. Pool entry has kindly been offset by the Kurrimine Beach Holiday Park.

Music Dates for Term 4 below: A reminder that both music and camp fees are due tomorrow

The Kindergarten hosted a very successful Open Morning on Tuesday. Several children and parents attended the Kindy for the morning. The Kindy children enrolling at St. John's in 2015 attended the Prep/1 room at the school for the morning session. They were very excited when they returned to the Kindy for morning tea. We also welcomed Sunny and his family to the Kindy for his first day. This week we are focussing on the concept of 'under'. This learning can be reinforced at home through simple activities that involve the children being 'under' or putting on object 'under'. The children have been learning the names of the letters that start their first names. To consolidate the children's learning please help your child to find Show and Tell items that start with the same letter as the first letter of their name. For example, Sunny would bring in an item starting with 'S'. There will be a Parent Committee meeting held next Thursday morning at 9.00am at the Kindy. We hope parents can stay back for a short while to join in on this meeting. As Term 4 progresses there will be a Working Bee roster with jobs that parents can assist with. Rather than have one set day for the Working Bee, each family will be able to assist at a time that is mutually suitable. This is the only term that we have had Working Bee jobs this year and we would appreciate the help of all families to spread the load. Please see either Denise or myself to discuss how you can assist. Regards Robyn & Denise W3

With less than 35 school days left at St.John’s the Year 6 and 7 students are very much in the home straight of their primary school years! As they are also finding out, this exciting time needs tremendous hard work and persistence to get everything completed that is required. These things include an autobiography, graduation night speech and slide show, graduation invitations and also learning their lines for the Year 4-7 extraordinary Christmas concert presentation. On top of this, the students still have their usual curriculum areas to attend to. This term students will be focusing on shapes and angles in Maths, weather and seasons in Science, Biographies in English and keeping the school safe in Health. The students are also completing tasks in History and Geography that will cap off the learning in these areas for the year. The topics studied were Ancient Rome and drinkable water in the world for the Year 7’s and the history of Australia in regard to federation and woman’s rights and Australia’s connection to Asia for the Year 6’s. Last, but certainly not least, the Year 6 and 7 students are now excitedly only 5 days away from heading west on our school camp adventure. This will tie in many things we have learnt this year including early life in Australia, Ancient History with a focus on dinosaurs and weather patterns in Science. The 36 degree days will be a great example for our look at the changing of seasons to hotter periods in the year. I look forward to sharing these adventures and many photos on our return next week.

World Mission Day is celebrated every year in every country wherever there are Catholics

committed to building a better world for all of God's people, a world where everyone has all they need to live a dignified and fulfilling life. It is the day on which we reflect on the urgency to proclaim the Gospel in our times. Missionary activity is a response to God’s love for us. God's love is the spiritual energy that can make harmony; justice and communion grow among persons, races and peoples for which everyone is searching. The God of love is the source of care, tenderness, compassion, hospitality and interest in other people's problems, for spreading Christ's charity around the world.
