St John Ambulance is the nations’s leading first aid charity. Every year 45,000 of our volunteers treat, transport and provide care for over 200,000 people in local communities nationwide. We are also one of the country’s leading youth organisations, with half of our members aged 25 and under.

FIRST AID VOLUNTEERSIf you want to provide direct care to your local community and beyond, volunteering as a first aider with us is an ideal way to learn life saving skills and help those in need. You will receive comprehensive training to become a qualified first aider with the opportunity to continue to advance your skills. You will help provide first aid cover in a variety of di�erent settings including concerts, community and sporting fixtures, as well as national events.

COMMUNITY PROJECT VOLUNTEERSIn addition to our first aid service, many of our areas provide or contribute to a care or support service, helping the community. As a volunteer with St John Ambulance you can become involved with such projects. These include:

SUPPORT VOLUNTEERSFor every first aider there is a dedicated team of support volunteers ensuring that we can continue to provide our first aid, training, transport and care services. The range of voluntary roles available for all abilities is vast. These roles can be based in your local unit, or on a country-wide level. You can also choose to volunteer solely in a support role, or in addition to being a first aider.

with two fingers of your other hand to ensure their airway is open

Pinch their nose to close their nostrils. Take a breath, seal your lips over their mouth and breathe out until their chest rises

Maintaining the head tilt and chin lift, take your mouth away from theirs. Look along their chest and watch it fall

Repeat to give two rescue breaths. Repeat 30 chest compressions, followed by two rescue breaths.

Our volunteers provide first aid in their communities, keeping people safe at events, and working with the NHS when lives are on the line. They all share the same commitment: to offer vital help, on the spot, when it’s most desperately needed.

They’re on hand to care for people at tens of thousands of festivals, sporting fixtures and community events every year. And behind the scenes, our Community First Responders play an equally important role, often arriving first on the scene at 999 calls, and providing life saving first aid in the minutes before an ambulance can arrive.

We also work with the NHS to provide contracted ambulance transport services in the community, and our fleet of vehicles gives vital support to the statutory services in times of crisis.

ON HAND WHERE WE’RE NEEDED MOST


We want to teach a generation life saving skills. Because if first aid is second nature to young people, then they’ll have the confidence to use it.

Over half of the people we teach are under 18. We train young people in schools, and give teachers all the resources they need to pass on skills themselves.

Outside the classroom, our programmes offer young people from all walks of life the chance to learn first aid. We don’t just teach them life saving skills, though: by showing them how to pass their knowledge on to others, giving them the chance to become part of our event first aid teams, and gain qualifications along the way, we offer them life changing opportunities as well.

We do it by teaching people first aid – easy-to-learn, practical techniques that you can pick up in the time it takes to do your weekly shop. And we do it by making sure that our volunteers are always on hand to care for people in need at public events, and out in their community.

It might sound straightforward, but it has an incredible impact.

First aid gives people the confidence to do the right thing when it really counts. With it, anyone can be the difference between life and death.

We believe that everyone should get the chance to learn how to save a life.

We’re already the leading provider of workplace first aid training, reaching over 250,000 people a year.

But we know this isn’t enough.

That’s why our charitable work is so important. Using profits from our workplace training and product sales, along with the generous contributions of our supporters, we hold hundreds of public first aid demonstrations and easy-to-access training sessions every year. By doing this, we can give people access to important skills that they wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to learn.

We’re also always campaigning to raise awareness of first aid and developing new ways to provide people with basic knowledge – because even the most simple skills can save a life.

First aid gives people something amazing: the confidence to do the right thing when it really counts. With it, anyone can be the difference between life and death.

That’s why we teach people life saving skills – easy to learn, practical techniques that you can pick up in the time it takes to do your weekly shop. And it’s why we make sure that our volunteers are always on hand to care for people in need at public events, and out in their community.

It might sound straightforward, but it has an incredible impact.

Volunteer with us, and be part of a team that saves lives.

In return for your commitment, we’ll make sure you’re given all the support you need to excel in your role.

We’ll teach you first aid, of course, (whatever role you’ve signed up to), and provide you with equipment and uniform if you need it.

We’ll also make sure you have a manager to help you work out what new skills you need, what you need to work at, and the best way to go about it. You’ll get extra training when it’s relevant to your role, and all your volunteerinag experience will look great on your CV.

That’s not all though. As a volunteer for the nation’s leading first aid charity, you’ll also get to work side by side with inspirational people, from all walks of life, and with all kinds of expertise and experience.

Whatever you enjoy doing, and however much time you can commit, there’s a volunteer role for you.

If you’re great with people and have a caring nature, you could save lives as a first aider at events, or answering emergency calls as a Community First Responder. Whether you’ve just learned first aid, or you’re an experienced healthcare professional, there’s bound to be a role that you’re perfect for.

But that’s not the only way to get involved. We’re also looking for youth leaders who can inspire the next generation, fundraisers to share their passion for first aid with the public, volunteer managers, and safeguarding, HR and assurance experts to make sure we’re getting the important things right behind the scenes.

‘I’d never had any first aid training before I signed up as a volunteer. I actually hate the sight of blood! But when someone’s in need, all the things you usually worry about don’t seem to matter – it stops being about you, and becomes about them. Our first aid volunteers are a familiar sight, but we also have hundreds of volunteers making things happen behind the scenes. If you want to give something back to your community – and get new experience – we have a whole range of volunteer roles that can put your skills to good use.

Every volunteer on the front line, every youth leader, and every first aid trainer in a classroom, is supported by a team of people who helped get them there. HOW DO YOU WANT TO HELP?

Whatever you enjoy doing, and however much time you can commit, there’s a support volunteer role for you.

If you have management or supervisory experience and want to enhance your skills, we’re looking for unit managers to lead weekly meetings and organise events and training, and area managers to support several units.

If you love meeting people, safeguarding could be a great role for you. You’ll visit our units, organise training and deal with causes for concern – to make sure young people and vulnerable adults who volunteer with us are safe.

If you enjoy getting the best out of people, we need human resources experts to support our managers. You’ll advise on recruitment, development and conduct, as well as supporting change initiatives.

If you excel at making sure things are carried out to a high quality, and compliant with standards set by external regulators, we need your skills in assurance. As well as conducting audits, you’ll also identify areas of excellence and share best practice.

If you’re passionate about safety issues, health & safety is the role for you. You’ll ensure that activities are conducted safely and in compliance with our policies, so that all our volunteers work safely.

If you think you fit the bill for any of these roles, we’d love you to be part of our team.

‘My role in safeguarding means that if there are any issues, adult volunteers and young people can speak to me about them. It’s fantastic to be able to help people who come to me, and to feel that level of trust.

I’m studying to be a mental health nurse and volunteering has definitely benefited my professional life. I’m so much more confident in my clinical and communication skills. If you’d asked me a year ago about interacting with people, I’d have been worried – now it comes naturally!

HOW DOES A YOUTH LEADER HELP?

WHAT YOU gET in RETURn

We’re looking for volunteer youth leaders who can inspire the next generation of life savers.

Young people join either as Badgers (up to 10 years old) or Cadets (up to 18 years old), where they learn first aid, make new friends and take part in a range of fun activities. Cadets also get the chance to provide first aid to the public at events and teach first aid to others. Our RISE project helps disadvantaged young people, not in education, employment or training, learn how to save lives and gain new skills.

As a volunteer youth leader you’ll support young people in learning first aid and help them gain new skills, experience and qualifications along the way. You will encourage and inspire young people from all walks of life to develop their potential.

If you think you fit the bill, we’d love you to be part of our team.

‘I’m currently studying health and social care, and I also work as a medic at the O2 arena. Volunteering’s taught me so many things that will help with my career – everything from interview skills to writing better emails! I’ve also gained communication, listening and presentation skills.
