Querida Comunidad de San Agustín,

Hoy Jesús nos hace la misma pregunta que le hizo a sus primeros discípulos, “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” La respuesta que demos está basada en la relación personal, que tengamos con Jesús.

Jesús no quiere una respuesta basada en lo que nos enseñaron nuestros padres, nuestros catequistas, lo que nos digan otros de El, o lo que la Iglesia nos diga. Jesús quiere una respuesta que nazca de lo profundo de nuestro corazón.

“Tú eres el Mesías”, la respuesta de Pedro es correcta pero no nacía del corazón. Pedro no había comprendido totalmente quién era Jesús. Los judíos esperaban que Dios enviara a su Mesías para establecer el Reino de Dios, universal y eterno. Pero un Mesías con poder político, militar y social. Jesús era, en verdad, el Ungido de Dios, el Mesías, pero su reinado era de santidad y de vida, de justicia, de amor y de paz, un reino caracterizado por el amor y el servicio.

Cuando Jesús les anuncia su misión – “El Hijo del hombre tiene que padecer mucho, ser rechazado por los ancianos, sumos sacerdotes y escribas, ser ejecutado y resucitar al tercer día” (Mc 8:31), Pedro no comprende y Jesús lo reprende. Entonces Jesús nos habla de la cruz. Mis queridos hermanos, Jesús requiere algo de nosotros para seguirle; nos pide renunciar a nosotros mismos y cargar con la cruz.

¿Estamos dispuestos a aceptar y seguir esta exigencia evangélica? ¡Quiera Dios que sí!

El viernes disfrutamos la película “Restless Heart” (Corazón Inquieto) basada en las confesiones de San Agustín. Este gran hombre, obispo y doctor de nuestra Iglesia, supo cargar con su cruz y seguir a Jesús. Rumbo a celebrar los cincuenta años de nuestra parroquia en el 2019, pudimos conocer más de la vida de nuestro santo Patrón. Quiero darle las gracias a todos los que ayudaron y colaboraron en esta actividad parroquial.

Que Dios derrame abundantes bendiciones sobre nuestra comunidad.

Dear Community of St. Augustine,

Today, Jesus asks us the same question He asked to his first disciples: “But who do you say that I am?” Our reply is based upon our personal relationship with Jesus.

Jesus does not want an answer based upon what our parents and our catechists taught us, on what others say about Him, or what the Church says. He wants an answer that comes from the depth of our hearts.

"You are the Messiah”, Peter’s reply, is the right one, but did not come from his heart. Pedro did not fully understand who Jesus really was. The Jewish people waited for God to send them His Messiah to establish His Kingdom, a universal and eternal kingdom. But a Messiah with political, military and social power. Jesus was, indeed, the Anointed One, the Messiah, but His Kingdom was a kingdom of sanctity and life, of justice, love, and peace, characterized by love and service.

When Jesus announces His mission – “The Son of Man must suffer greatly, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and rise after three days” (Mk 8:31), Pedro did not understand, and Jesus reprimands him. Then, Jesus speaks about the Cross. My dear brothers and sisters, Jesus requires something from us to follow Him, He asks us to renounce to ourselves and carry our cross.

Are we willing to accept and follow this evangelical requirement? I hope to God we are!

On Friday we enjoyed the movie Restless Heart, based on the confessions of St. Augustine. This great man, Bishop and Doctor of our Church, knew how to carry his cross and follow Jesus. Preparing ourselves to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our Parish in 2019, we were able to know more about the life of our Patron Saint. I want to express my gratitude to those who made possible this parochial activity.

May God bless our community abundantly!

PANS DISTRIBUTION

This weekend the pans will be distributed should you wish to use the pans for desserts. Desserts should be brought back to the Parish Life Center next weekend Saturday, September 22nd between 4:30pm—7:30pm or Sunday 23rd by 2:30pm. The Coalition for the Homeless will be grateful for any and all donations. Thank you all for your generosity!

Haz que estemos atentos a la presencia de tu Palabra en ellos, Palabra que eleve y afirme, y que a la vez convoque y desafíe, que sea compasiva y que consuele. Oremos para que nuestra familia parroquial siempre sea bendecida con aquellos que han respondido al llamado a compartir la misión profética de Cristo como catequistas. Que estemos también abiertos al llamado universal al servicio que Cristo dirige a todos sus discípulos, contribuyendo con nuestros dones a la comunión de la fe, la Iglesia. PRAYER FOR CATECHISTS O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of these catechists to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family. We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hopes and needs. May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is compassionate and consoles. We pray that our parish family will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in Christ’s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of his disciples, contributing our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
