Next monthly meeting:

Sunday, May 20, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. Tom Brown Arena, 141 Bayview Road, Ottawa

Program: This month the Society is hosting Laura Bonnell who will be doing a presentation on Guarianthe aurantica. Laura is a third-year Associate Judge at the Toronto Additional Judging Center (Montréal), and is also on the executive committees of Les Orchidophiles de Montréal and the Eastern Canada Orchid Society, in addition to being a member of the Southern Ontario Orchid Society. An accomplished orchid grower for about 15 years, she has received no less than three AOS awards for Phalaenopsis, Masdevallia and Guarianthe. Although her favourite genus is Phalaenopsis (especially Phalaenopsis species), she has been known to try to grow anything that has orange-coloured flowers.

President’s Message

Hi Everyone, As I mentioned last month, I was not able to be at the Show this year and I hope everything went well with good crowds as usual! I look forward to chatting with everyone at the May meeting to catch up on the news. Thanks to all the committee members and volunteers, and a special thanks to our Show Co-Chairs Jan and Janet. As Society President, I find it very heartening that we have such excellent support from so many members – the Society is only as strong

as the people involved. For our new members, especially those who joined during the show, welcome to the Society and please feel free to come and talk with me at any of the meetings. I know it can be a bit intimidating at first when you don’t know people, but we all share our common interest in orchids and we are always happy to have questions, ideas and suggestions from all our members. And remember what they say – there are no silly questions!

An End-Of-Year Dinner 2018

The Party Girls are planning an end-of-year dinner for Saturday, May 26, at 6:00 p.m. at the Yangtze Restaurant, 700 Somerset St. This is a great opportunity to chat with members new and old in an informal setting. You are welcome to bring your partner even if he/she doesn't like orchids! There will be a fixed menu which will cost approximately $30 and will be collected at dinner; alcoholic drinks will be your responsibility. The restaurant seats us in a semi-private area where we will be able to mix and mingle. We did this a few years ago and everyone had a good time. Please let Janet Johns ([email protected]) or Helen Nitschkie ([email protected]) know if you plan to attend and let them know of any dietary restrictions. There will also be a sign-up sheet at the May meeting.

Orchidophilia 2018

Orchidophilia 2018 is now in the past. Your Co-Chairs, Jan and Janet, would like to express their sincere thanks to all of you for the great effort you put into making our 37th annual show such a success. Our attendance over the two days was over 2400. Our vendors and visiting societies were impressed and happy. Please join us for a sweet treat at the May meeting – and a special offering on the raffle table from Joaillerie l’Amulette. If you haven’t already done so, please collect any road signs you took, and return them at the May meeting or to Jean Hollebone’s carport at 1176 Castle Hill Crescent just off Maitland. See you at the May meeting.

Jan and Janet Johns

How I Grow My Orchids

Spring seems to be late this year, but my house plants have been reacting to an increase in light since February. Since moving into my present house 15 years ago, I find that some of my plants have suffered. I gave away the bigger plants (close to a metre), for whom there were no big windows that provided good light. I tried to concentrate on the smaller plants, but inevitably I either am given or purchase something big again. The big Cattleyas do OK, once I can put them outdoors, but I wind up

bringing them in, in the fall, with unwanted travellers like slugs, etc., and that is a subject for another discussion. Since I had been asked to do out-of-town shows, I found myself buying a few more plants. After our own show, at which I purchased more plants, but tried to stick to miniatures, I found the need to repot my plants. For those of you who are new to orchid growing, the question always arises when to repot? I purchased enough orchids in the flimsy plastic holders that keep the orchid roots in sphagnum moss which can cause root rot if the orchids are overwatered, because sphagnum moss does hold its water well. That is not to say that all orchids potted in sphagnum moss will rot, but in my case I group my orchids in clear plastic utility boxes and water the boxes instead of each plant. That way it takes me less time to water. I use a car siphon to drain the water into a bucket. It is not necessarily a good thing to grow the plants that way, because if you introduce a new plant to your old plants and the new plant has bugs, or viruses, then all your old plants will tend to get bugs or viruses. So, beware and keep new purchases separate from your old purchases not to introduce any problems. Because of my plant grouping, my plants retain the water longer and the sphagnum moss does not dry out, so plants such as Phalaenopsis tend to get soggy roots when potted in sphagnum in my house. I tend to water once a week, but when it is cold outside and I have old fashioned radiators that give off heat, above which my plants sit, I do sometimes give them water more often; therefore, bark is a much more preferred potting medium for my plants. Bark does disintegrate with time and needs to be changed also.

In the past I had looked into different types of potting mediums. You can find many possibilities in businesses that sell hydroponic supplies. Each material has different properties. Some, like clay pellets, can get overgrown with algae. Algal growth in small amounts is not too problematic, but in large amounts, if it smells bad, can cause orchid roots to decompose. There are some algae that are beneficial, so do some research if you wish to change your potting media. I managed to re-pot the new purchases, but still have to re-pot the overgrown orchids or ones that are in a dire need for repotting. Ideally one should re-pot a plant when it is not in flower and just starting new growth, but if it is a case of getting the plant out of rotting material, I repot when I notice the plant struggling. Now that I have purchased so many new plants, I am considering growing under lights again because my house does not have ideal lighting for my plants, but that too is a better subject for another time! Happy potting!

Dracula Reserve - Update

What’s Happening with the Dracula Reserve? By Peter Tobias President, Orchid Conservation Alliance I’m sure that more than one of you would like to know how we did last year raising money for the Dracula Reserve in Ecuador, what happened to the money, and what our plans are for this year. First, the fundraising results: In a word, Amazing! From all donations and membership renewals you donated $86,221. That is a sum unmatched in our history. Additionally, through profits from our Orchids in the Wild trips, you donated $15,954. Total = $102,175. An historic first! Well done everyone. To that total the OCA board voted to add $9,167 from funds on hand, but of course these ultimately came from you also, and sent $111,342 to Rainforest Trust to be matched dollar for dollar for Fundación EcoMinga to purchase land for the Dracula Reserve. Thus, by your generosity, Fundación EcoMinga received $222,684 to expand the Dracula Reserve. I hope you all take a lot of pleasure in having made it possible for that sum to go towards preserving the habitat sheltering Dracula orchids. The maps below show where the Dracula Reserve is and what is happening to develop it. The first map, at lower left, locates the reserve in Ecuador. It is just south of the Colombian border on the west slope of the Andes. The rectangular map at right outlines a 20-mile-long valley which has an unparalleled concentration of Dracula species. Exactly why this area is so rich is not clear.

Dracula Reserve - Update

Last year Gary Meyer, taxonomist and President of the Pleurothallid Alliance, wrote: “This area is special for a number of reasons. First and foremost, this is the region with the highest Dracula diversity that we know of – anywhere. At least 19 species have been found here; most of them were originally discovered in this area. Two are natural hybrids that keep recurring, and one very rare species that lives here is not in cultivation at all. There are things that get reported from the area occasionally that have not been identified yet; likely, species are waiting to be described. In fact, I and my Ecuadorian friend Luis Baquero described Dracula trigonopetala just a few years ago after it was found here. In all my travels to study Draculas in situ I have never seen an area with this density of Dracula diversity. Unfortunately, even though this area is essentially the epicenter of Dracula diversity, it was also completely unprotected until a coalition of conservation groups, including the OCA and EcoMinga [and the University of Basel], bought the first properties to be part of this Dracula reserve. It is not a coincidence that in my travels I find the best and most stable populations of Draculas inside protected lands. I do find them on unprotected lands, but I cannot tell you how often I and other pleurothallid hunters have returned to unprotected sites to find the plants poached or the forests obliterated.” The rectangular map shows the properties which are now, or will be in the near future, parts of the reserve. The properties colored red are now owned by Fundación EcoMinga. With the exception of the small property on the Colombian border where Phragmipedium fischeri grows, these properties were purchased in 2015. We donated $44,000 to that 2015 effort. The fischeri property was purchased in 2017. Properties in orange are in the process of being acquired. Properties in yellow are parcels whose purchase price has been negotiated but are waiting for money to be available. The properties in blue are desired for future purchase but have no purchase agreements. Their purchase is probably some years off. Also shown are two green areas; these are protected lands, but poorly monitored. The Dracula Reserve properties are monitored by two guards who live in a nearby town. This valley was only recently made accessible, and thus made open for exploitation, by the Ecuadoran government’s construction of the road through the valley. This occurred 10 – 15 years ago. Following construction of the road the valley began to be exploited

by farmers who cleared the land for ranching, cultivation, and settlement. At that time most of the land was owned by the government. As it once was in the US, individuals could homestead on the land. If they made it productive for some number of years, they could obtain paper title to the land and become the land’s formal owners. When I say above that “Properties in orange are in the process of being acquired,” in many cases this means that while the owners have homesteaded rights to the land, they do not yet have paper title and thus cannot yet sell the land. In these cases, Fundación EcoMinga is helping the owners with the paperwork so that EcoMinga can then buy the land. Many of you whom I have met at an orchid show or at a society meeting have heard me say that OCA does not own the land because we have no idea how to own or manage land in Ecuador. Often, I am referring to the complexities of the homesteading process. We have no way of assisting a landowner in Ecuador to obtain paper title to his/her land so that we could buy it. And as foreigners, although we can own land, we do not have the right to set land aside in conservation easements, which protects the land from squatters and mineral development. These are all things that Fundación EcoMinga knows how to do and can do. I hope this summary of what is happening with the Dracula Reserve has been interesting. Let me know if you have questions via [email protected] or the OCA website www.orchidconservationalliance.org. So, what’s next? The OCA is evaluating fundraising opportunities for 2018, and we will be in touch soon to let you know where our efforts will be directed. Thank you for all of your support in 2017, and be on the lookout for information about the 2018 OCA fundraising campaign! NOTE: The Ottawa Orchid Society made a donation toward this project.
