9. Digital Security (self-protection): electronic precautions to guarantee safety. In any society, there are individuals who steal, deface, or disrupt other people. The same is true for the digital community. It is not enough to trust other members in the community with our own safety. In our own homes, we put locks on our doors and fire alarms in our houses to provide some level of protection. The same must be true for digital security. We need to have virus protection, backups of data, and surge control of our equipment. Cyber safety is the safe and responsible use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). NetSafe's approach to cyber safety is founded on:

Dedicate one class to what is expected when going online from the school before you even go online.

Avoid letting students search and wander - they could end up entering areas that are unsafe and may see things that they should not be viewing.

Look for warning signs for potential trouble.

Reward students who are acting responsibly in the class when on the Internet. 

Display positive messages around the classroom to reinforce the importance of Internet safety.

costume (online name), you don’t know if you’re talking to your friend or someone you don’t know.

Any stranger can pretend to be a friend, and you have no way of knowing who they are because they are behind the mask of the computer.

Personal Information is private. Never give out personal or identifying information such as name, address, school name, birth date, or phone number in any public message such as a chat room or on a bulletin board.

Never post pictures of yourself without checking with your parent or guardian first.

Remember, just because someone asks for information about you doesn’t mean that you have to tell them anything about yourself!

Can you tell someone you like blue?  You like pizza?  Type of pets that you have?  Your favorite movie?

Can you tell someone your favorite movie theater? Your favorite beach? Your teacher’s names?

Be careful in joining mailing lists; some may make your personal information public

When using newsgroups, forums, and bulletin boards, remember not to slip and say anything that can reveal your identity. Little pieces of information can be put together over time to reveal who you are.

Have adults approve someone before you talk with them on the Internet.

If someone asks to meet you – tell an adult immediately.

Do not go into chat rooms without your parent's knowledge. Chat rooms are particularly dangerous - people you meet in chat rooms can easily be adult “predators" with misleading  names such as “jason15” and “cutiepie08”.

Never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone you meet online. You have no way of really knowing if that person is a 15 year old boy or a 50 year old man.

Makes sure websites are approved by parents, guardians, or teachers

If you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable with what you see tell an adult or click off.

Do not open email from strangers. Do not open email with attachments. Do not give out email address (unless approved or to a classmate). Do not open links or files from people you don’t know. Never respond to e-mails with pornographic or other inappropriate material. Do not respond to advertisements - this confirms that you have a working e-mail account, and you will only receive more junk e-mails.

Don’t share your passwords with anyone but your parents or guardian, including even your best friend.

No one should ever ask you for your password including anyone online.

When you use a public computer make sure that you log out of all the accounts you have accessed before logging off.

checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring a parent along.

4. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.

5. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away.

6. I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online and using a mobile phone. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online, and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.

7. I will not give out my passwords to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents.

8. I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or mobile device or jeopardize my family’s privacy.

9. I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.

10. I will help my parents understand how to have fun and learn things online and teach them things about the Internet, computers, and other technology.

1. Cindy has been talking online to a girl named Julie for a few days now. Julie has told Cindy where she lives, how old she is, where she goes to school, and what she looks like. Julie asks Cindy what school she goes to.
