- About Just Festival- Aims and objectives- School Events- Public Events

Just Festival was created in Edinburgh in 2000. It has no expanded its August programme to a small range of year-round public events and is starting a new programme of events specially for schools.

Just Festival events aim to chal lenge percept ions, celebrate dif ferences and promote respect ful dialogue. The conversations, talks, exhibitions and performances of Just?s annual programme are designed to engage with topical local, national and international questions of social justice, equality and identity, including prejudice against race, ethnicity, class and economic status. Just explores these issues by creating safe spaces for dialogue and exchange between

affected groups and individuals, invited experts, practitioners, community based organisations, socially conscious performing arts groups and the general public.

This multi-dimensional, multi-stakeholder approach encourages creative engagement with important societal questions from a variety of angles and perspectives with the aim of reducing religious, political and social intolerance.

By int roducing the 'Just 4 Schools' Programme we aim to reach out to secondary school students and engage them in social just ice issues. With our Just for Al l scheme we are able to offer young people free access to our fest ival events.

Just Fest ival Values

We believe that through respect for each other's faith and belief, culture, philosophy and ideas, as well as each individual's right to self-expression and freedom, we can be part of the wider movement to establish a more united world. With these values in mind, we strive to promote a safe, inclusive and creative environment for everyone who is willing to engage with us to work together to foster understanding and respect.

'Just 4 Schools' offers a socially-conscious programme of events and activities addressed to the secondary school students in Edinburgh. It is supported by the Robertson Trust and the Scot t ish Government Promot ing Equal ity and Social Cohesion Fund.

The events and activities are developed in partnership with academics, performers and educators in line with the Curriculum for Excellence guidelines.

By bringing our social ly-conscious and engaging events to secondary schools, we aim to encourage the partnerships for learning recommended by the Curriculum for Excel lence guidel ines. We are convinced that school-community

partnerships improve students' transition into conscious citizenship. Community- based activities can indeed help to build the confidence and motivation of young people and allow them to develop skills for learning, life and work, preparing them for future roles in society. '

Just Festival events primarily focus on the following curriculum areas: expressive arts, health and wellbeing, rel igious and moral educat ion and social studies.

Through the events to be hosted in secondary schools, we wish to bring social justice matters closer to students, whilst delivering the events in the surroundings they feel comfortable in.

All events presented here are offered free of charge and will be

arranged at the time convenient for schools.

We would appreciate it if you could consider welcoming the events at your school and select events that meet your needs., guidelines and expectations. All events will be attended by a Just Festival representative along with the event contributor. We will evaluate each event for our monitoring purposes and share outcomes with the school. All feedback will be collected in line with the data protection regulations.

We aim to make a last ing impact on your students' involvement in community l ife.

It encourages pupils to consider the impact of so-called 'street harassment' as well as understand ways that they can help make a difference. My Neighbourhood

This multimedia performance takes pupils on a colourful and personal journey, first from Vienna to Axum, and then through encounters with seven different people living in the ?Garbage City? in Cairo. Their joys, their struggles, their tragedies, and their small triumphs are what brings us closer to the life in the capital of Egypt. In telling his stories Christian Stejskal uses narration and projected pictures accompanied by live performances of music. Composed himself for the violin, as well as some Arabic music (also on the violin). The duration of the performance is approximately 85 minutes. . .

Durat ion: 90 minutes

Spect-Act

Drama workshops designed to involve pupils in the theatre techniques known as the Theatre of the Opressed. This workshop will enable students to work with members of Active Inquiry Theatre Company and the community groups we work with. There is a choice of three workshops - Mental Health, Gender and Domestic Violence or Addiction and Recovery. Each workshop will be practical and involve theatre games and exercises that are co-facilitated by participants with direct experience of these issues. Students will be encouraged to explore these issues as wider structural problems rather than just individual stories.
